    It would be neat if you show your polars now and when you arrive in Miami to see how "smart" the system is and how good the estimated polars are right now.

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  11 месяцев назад +2

      That’s a great idea but it’s a bit complicated as we’re not using theoretical polars as a reference. We ultimately need to sail a lot in different conditions and build our own overtime.

Keith switched off probably to avoid Orcas for a safe crossing Gibraltar....Looking forward to seeing you next week in the Canaries....

    In one of the first episodes, you explained your rational in taking an experienced captain with you. Your explanation and logic made tons of sense to me and I think I would have done the same...
    But I do have an honest question to ask...
    Does having a captain, in fact two in back to back are forcing you to a schedule and a route less than ideal which in normal circumstances you won't take?
    There are pro and cons with everything, is this a real con?

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  11 месяцев назад +1

      It is a very valid point, but at the same time it puts you through conditions that you will typically try to avoid but that you will eventually have to face one day, so gaining that experience in a 'controlled' environment is useful and makes you a better sailor in the end. The same applies when you do sailboat racing as you don't get to choose the weather.
      There were different factors in us deciding to push through to get out of the Med but that was an obvious one. Also, we had already delayed our start by a week because of crazy conditions for days in a row all over the western Med and knew this type of weather could potentially come back. At one point our weather router made a comment that the Med had been awful this year, including this summer.
      We purposely wanted to have about a month in the Canaries as a buffer between leg 1 and leg 2 for boat improvements (small personal projects) and potential boat repairs as it is a new boat and a new model, but so far everything is looking great.
      When Nikki joins us for the Atlantic crossing we will be back in sync with the season so it will be much more straightforward weather wise. The tradewinds will be well established by then.
      Happy to answer any question! 👍

      The only hard date we have is meeting Stephane’s daughter in mid-December and being on the other side before the end of week 2 in January. We wanted to get on our way from La Grande Motte and that was a good window. I suppose we could have stopped longer along the way but it was a group decision to continue. It’s not a great time of year in the Med at all so we needed to leave one way or the other. Hope this helps.

    Lol Stephane. It's not a project, it's called cruising. You have ups and downs, but your journey towards Gibraltar could be one of the lowest, hopefully. It surely will happen again though. A shame you don't have time to visit Morocco a couple of days. Bon voyage and many good weather forecasts 😁

      Good point and you’re definitely right, it will happen again, and again the good times will make us conveniently forget the down days 😉

    Ten knots of wind? Open the genoa! If there are more than five knots of wind, I always put the genoa on to help the gennaker, it is worth the increase in speed, and it doesn't bother me at all.

      @@SailingAWEN On the contrary, it was very good that you published it. I like to see real people, not those highly edited videos that look like advertising for car salesmen.

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  11 месяцев назад +1

      I posted a short video on both FB and Instagram of the speeds we are getting with our A2 in about 10 knots of wind. It is a big sail and get us moving pretty quick at about 140-145 TWA. If it gets lighter we can always head up more and head down in stronger winds.
      I feel the genoa will mostly likely disrupt the air flow, just not enough gap between the forestay and bowsprit. One thing we will definitely play with in the future is the Code 65 with the Staysail. 😁

    Hey what weather routing software is that as I’m always using predict wind but yours takes into account the sails you have onboard etc which looks far superior ?

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  11 месяцев назад

      It’s called Octopus from Adrena. It’s the cruising version of the application Adrena which is used by most French professional racers. It’s a good software but the user interface needs a major revamp.

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  11 месяцев назад

      It is definitely not the same budget when you count the software, the windows PC (no Mac version), the charts (as you cannot reuse the charts from your MFD) and training.
      It’s interesting to us, for a boat like ours and the way we intend to sail but otherwise predictwind does a great job.
      I can give more feedback and show the capabilities after I have used it a lot more.
