What Size Aider Do I Need?

  • One of the most frequent questions I get when people start looking to order a stick for one-sticking is "What distance should my steps be on my aider?" ... quickly followed up by "Should I get a two- or three-step aider?" In this video, I show you a few different sizes so you can get a feel of how they would work for YOU -- plus answer the question if a longer aider is really going to help once you start climbing. #saddlehunter #saddlehunting #onesticking

    Outstanding set of videos lately. Just ordered my EWO ultimate one stick with the U.P. and the two step aider. Was going to get the three step aider. Realizing I can only reach so high, two step is all I need. Your videos helped out a ton. But I will say, the video of the decade was the booger retriever. It has been ordered. Keep up the great videos!

    Great, much needed video! Totally agree you can only teach what your arms length is. However, I just discovered a u tube video that shows putting on a "Tether Aider" onto your aider. This allows you to step up and put the one stick right under the tether (on the tree) this allowing you to increase your height by about 20" per move of your stick (after putting it on at base of tree) Thanks again!

  • @JDye-youtube
    @JDye-youtube 3 года назад +3

    Other than the first move, your total gain is determined by your body height vs the aider length (at least for the 2 or 3 step aider). However if you get a 3 step you can start a touch higher on the first move AND have closer (ie easier) spacing on your steps, which is real advantage of a 3 over a 2. Good vid. Maybe everyone will quit sweating this one so much.....nah, buckets will still flow! Ha! Ha! Ha!

    I'm brand new to saddle hunting (diy, RCH + fleece setup), and in my limited experience so far, it seems like the step spacing is the most important factor. As you've pointed out, you can only reach so high. So after you start, it comes down to how high (comfortably, quietly) you can get your leg up, and in MI winters I am bundled in a coverall. Awesome video, thanks for putting out this content.

    It seems to all be a function of how much rope you let out when when you prepare to reach down to grab your stick, that is where the couple inch difference stems.

  • @ToddCBrown

    Thank you for the detail, as always.
    So it seems to me that the climber just needs to get the step they are comfortable with using. Getting some really long step or more steps is really only of value on the first climb, and even then it is limited by your reach.

    A 3 step aider is most effective on a stick set , no real advantage to a one stick set. Another reason I don’t one stick plus all the movement and noise it takes to get it done. Thanks for the demo Greg, it confirmed exactly what my concerns were.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  3 года назад +2

      No problem man... one thing I'd add -- and I'm NOT trying to sell anyone on this -- is from a NOISE level, don't take too much away from this video, as I was ABSOLUTELY not being careful in the least... far from it. I can climb up a tree while one-sticking as quietly as I can with a climber or with four sticks.

    I gain 6ft each stick move (MEASURED) USING 20 inch stick with single 20 inch aider. I am 5ft 8 in tall. You loose some heigth by placing stick under tether. Loose some heigth by staying low enough to reach stick when removing from tree.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  3 года назад +1

      100% agree. My main goal in making this video was to give people a frame of reference so they could figure out things for themselves ... obviously if people are taller, they’ll get more height then I do and vice versa. Similarly, if people push the stick higher by going around the tether as you mention, then you can gain a few inches that way as well.

    As I get more practiced climbing the tree, (am afraid of heights), I am more and more concerned about height. Ordered 4 24 inch Beast Sticks, had a difficult time making the steps, ( am 5' 10", 240 lbs,), trying to lose some weight, but still had a time getting that 22 inch step. bought some aluminun tubing, transferred all the Beast Stick hardware to make myself 20 inch sticks, 18 inch step. Added 4 cable aiders at 18 inch step. been practicing with that, in fact, when on my first saddle hunt Saturday, hunting hogs on public land, I quess my question is this: when I am in better shape, would it be advisable to switch everything back to the Beast 24 inch sticks, in order to gain the extra height. only gaining about 16 inches. what do you think?

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  3 года назад

      Honestly I'd probably suggest selling the 24" Beast sticks and using that money to buy the Beast minis and using either a knaider or versa aider with them... Either one is SUPER simple to use and will make up any ground you lost and you won't be fishing for dangling aiders. My personal preference would be to use a knaider... it's a hook that straps to your lower leg around knee height, or slightly below -- about where your patella would be. You always know where your knee is, so it's easy to know where it is. And YOU set the height of the stick so you control how high you have to lift your knee to hook onto it. You can learn more about the concept in this video... ruclips.net/video/6esdzvAsHKc/видео.html

    Good video. I hunted this past season with the Ultimate One-Stick with a 15- inch step from platform to double step and then two 18-inch steps on the aider. I am probably going to buy a second one-stick (since my daughter or her boyfriend often join me and I loan them equipment). So I am thinking of what changes I want to make in this second Ultimate One-Stick when I purchase it, specifically changes in length of one stick (current is 15") and length and number of steps in aider (current is two steps and 18"). In this you discussed number of steps in aider. I am also interested in why you prefer a 12" stick over a longer stick. I can't remember if you have discussed that (why you chose 12" stick) yet.

    I haven't tried one sticking yet, but hope to soon. My thought when considering a 2 or 3 step aider was partially about how easy it is to get onto the aider after a move. I was thinking 3 step would be easier because it would hang lower. Can you comment on if there is a difference for that aspect? Thanks.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  3 года назад +2

      The three-step aider would definitely end up down where you’re hanging and be easy to get to, but I’ve never had a problem with getting my foot in the lower step after making a move; even the two-step aiders are long enough that when I reach as high as I can they’re still hanging low enough to facilitate an easy first step in that regard.

  • @dustinhamilton7886

    Try this instead. Swing off to side just a little, just enough to allow you to get your stick and move it straight up. Then instead of putting stick under rope you'll move stick up to just under girth hitch. Attach stick and set it. Get foot in aider and swing to front of stick and climb. You'll gain more than you think with each move.

      Another suggestion I would strongly encourage you on is to purchase the Ultimaider aider … it’s adjustable so you can tweak your step length to EXACTLY what you want … and you can even change it from a 3-step to a 2-step down the road if you so chose.

    Two step, three step, ten step it makes no difference. You'll only be able to set the next stick at your max reach and that is the limiting factor. You could gain a tiny amount each leg of you have longer sticks but not enough to compensate for an awkward step of you have to really stretch it.

      If you're not hampered by an old injury or something like that, I see no reason why a normal guy couldn't EASILY use 17" steps, even in more severe winter weather... I tend to favor a two-step aider myself, as there's just not a lot of gains after the first move with the extra step.

    The number of step aided comparisons is not correct! You started all of them at 4 ‘, you should have set them to where the bottom step was at your knee height. By setting them all at the same to platform height they all came within the same height at your second move, redo it and set them according to the bottom of the aided height and then you will see a height gain difference.

    • @StaggsintheWild
      @StaggsintheWild  3 года назад +1

      You must have only watched the second half of the video ... I did exactly what you said at the beginning to show the height gains that were possible with the different lengths. I set the sticks to 4’ on the SECOND half of the video to see how big a gain a person could get AFTER making their first move.
