Hi Mike. Yay front locker in! Very happy for you. 👊 you have gone too long without! This was such a great video. Because it didn’t go the way you wanted it too. And you didn’t edit it out. You kept it real. And that’s what makes your channel so relatable! You’re a talented guy. With normal tools. Doing the best you can with what ya got! Mike like others have commented. Might be best to keep the chrome alloy axles as spares. Break a stock one and not the ring and pinion. Put a spicer greaseable u joint on the long axle shaft. Because if you break the long axle shaft. Harder to fix in the field. Mike remember you’re most likely going to break a u joint when the wheels are turned. But snow will be so much more forgiving than rock etc. Great job on siping the tires they look great! Perhaps keep the chains off the front axle? Keep the weight down. Save the ring and pinion? And now the tires are siped. Front differential is locked. Rear chains might be enough? If the snow conditions warrant chains etc. Oh and 3 out of 5 guys I run into up here in Canada. Who run arb lockers. Say yeah. It’s not working right now. Air leak. I’ve no doubt ARB are great in warm climates. But like you. We get down to -35c here too. 🥶

I've taken the long shaft out and swapped it with a normal shaft. So the short on is a chromoly with a 5-760x joint, and the other is a standard cheap u joint with a normal shaft. I mean, I was thinking of going to CVs because if they brake, they don't tent to compromise the preload on the wheel bearings. So you can still drive. I will see how it goes but I think low speed might be the key.

Oh! I thoroughly agree that air lockers suck anywhere that has winter. My XJ is older and has (HAD) the Vaccum Disconnect to work the 4 wheel, and even THAT would freeze up. Glad it did, actually, I learnt a lesson the easy way.

I've forgotten a lot and could probably get back to being decent if I brushed up on my Swedish a bit, but I was well impressed by your pronunciation and the flow. And I know exactly what you mean, I understand Swedish and can somewhat communicate with it, I've also studied German and French and even though I understand some of it, it's incredibly hard for me to form a sentence as I'm missing quite a bit of words. Understanding is easier as even though you might miss a word here and there, you can usually piece it up. And once you have a good basic vocabulary, you can manoeuvre around the words you don't remember. .
I could see that wheel spin required before locking being a problem if you're a rock crawler, but for snow wheeling a little of wheel spin realistically wouldn't be much of a problem. Should work awesome for you! I'm looking forward to seeing your build change yet again as you work on developing a system for the increasing family size.
I think it would be a pain in the ass in some situations, but for what I do, it shouldn't be a big deal . I'm interested to see how it works, but I think I will probably end up snapping an axle shaft again! The bed in the back is almost finished, but the family stuff is yet to be determined. We're expecting our 2nd boy any day now! Myself and my oldest have been on a camp, and he loved it. I'm not sure if he could handle the winter, though. Thanks for watching
Nice project. And the car will definitely be a lot better off-road than it already is. About the E-lockers I see mostly bad experiences from people from Australia. Especially when the car rolls back a little bit the locker is out again. Personally I have no experience with it, have always used ARB or Ashcroft lockers. And I was very satisfied with that. Have fun with it.
With as many times as you open up them diffs you should get lubelocker gaskets for them. I know how much you like your silicone and sticky stuff but damn! Can't wait to see your overall test and review of that locker too

Got some spatter on your break disk. Made me laugh. Top tip if you do that just put the exact same amount of spatter on the other face of the disk otherwise you might get some vibrations at speed... It it still does it you might need to add some to your other disks as well to even it out. Will I get an alert in the app when the OF session with Babs goes live? Don't want to miss it.

Just did some upgrades to my XJ this weekend I had my son-in-law put in CV axles cuz well he was at the house and I didn't want to do it and what else is he for And I'm making fender flares for the front finally I'm tired of everything coming off the front tires and ending up on the windshield
Ah nice, what do you think of CV axles? I've been literally looking that up at this very moment as a replacement for my u joint axles. Not because of strength but because they are easy for me to buy here in Europe, and easy to swap out. Good luck on the fender build! Thanks for watching

@WorkshoptoWilderness no complaints. Works just as good as the factory lsd in the 8.25. It handled deep snow pretty well also. I'd do lsds front and rear again, it's no rock monster but it is still very capable.

I hope I can protect the rest of this thing from the same fate (it even has mint pinch welds). I was wondering where your front bumper is from? I looked for a video on it but couldn't find one.
Ah, fantastic! Sounds like a mint jeep and a good purchase. I'm sure if you film wax it and undercoat it, it will last forever. The film waxing is the main thing provided you don't plan on frame Stiffeners or something later. The bumper Is a tricky one because the guy doesn't make them anymore, sadly. He was a Polish guy who lived in the uk and made custom parts for Ebay. Thanks for watching!

They are probably 12" holes right where thr driver and passenger feet go. I'm assuming it's rusted from the inside out from the notorious cowl leak areas.
It sounds like its rusted from the inside, but good news that its just that area. If you just have that to do then you can paint inside and get the Jeep in a good state relatively painlessly.

Why did you grind the inner race of the bearing? You should heat it up before installing on the shaft. Looking forward to the next video! Keep posting :)
It's called a setup bearing. It's a common practice when setting up diffs as it allows removal to add or take away shims before committing to pressing on the final bearing. You can buy them like this but they cost more.
I’ve commented on your videos before and need to ask if it’s a good idea buying a 2000 year model XJ? I read they are prone to cracked heads? Or is it a simple fix and should not be a dealbreaker?
Is it a 4.0? The 2000 and 2001 4.0 had a slightly different head. Apparently, it is prone to cracking in one specific place. I wouldn't say it's a deal brakes as many run this head without issue. If it did crack, then the head can be swapped for a better head. I certainly wouldn't let this put you off if the jeep is in good condition.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness they are listed on Blocket and yes, 4.0. Prices are between 60-70.000 kronor. I saw a good 1995 model last week but it got sold fast. Now I see two green ones, a 2000 at 59.000 and a 2001 at 68.000. They look good in the pictures, but I guess I need to see them live.
I looked it up for years 1999, plus had the 0331, and it doesn't have enough nickle in the iron casting. Apparently, it can crack easier. It also mentioned that this doesn't happen to all of the years, so it's kind of a gamble. Apparently, some run fine for the whole of the engines life. I would go for it personally.

It sounds like the perfect use for the vehicle. Hopefully, the one you are looking for is in decent condition. Are you in Sweden? If so, is the jeep in the north or south?
They are tungsten studs that you shoot into the tire with a gun. It's a legal requirement here in the winter. The grooving I've done with a tire grooving tool to make them hold snow better.

You will love this locker, I do have a JT Rubicon and the lockers are great, my brother had one in his TJ Unlimited and it worked good for him.

Use the locked Dana 30 sparingly. The axle shafts really don’t like spinning 35s with a locker lol. I’ve broken many of them

How has the lsd been?
@WorkshoptoWilderness no complaints. Works just as good as the factory lsd in the 8.25. It handled deep snow pretty well also. I'd do lsds front and rear again, it's no rock monster but it is still very capable.
I love your videos! I just picked up a 96 Cherokee that is pretty rust free (except for ONLY the foot area of the floors). I hope I can protect the rest of this thing from the same fate (it even has mint pinch welds). I was wondering where your front bumper is from? I looked for a video on it but couldn't find one.
Ah, fantastic! Sounds like a mint jeep and a good purchase. I'm sure if you film wax it and undercoat it, it will last forever. The film waxing is the main thing provided you don't plan on frame Stiffeners or something later. The bumper Is a tricky one because the guy doesn't make them anymore, sadly. He was a Polish guy who lived in the uk and made custom parts for Ebay.

@WorkshoptoWilderness thanks for the reply! I've been watching your videos on the repair of the Jeep you had in the "yard" outside. I'll be in a similar boat with the foot well area. They are probably 12" holes right where thr driver and passenger feet go. I'm assuming it's rusted from the inside out from the notorious cowl leak areas.
It sounds like its rusted from the inside, but good news that its just that area. If you just have that to do then you can paint inside and get the Jeep in a good state relatively painlessly.

Why did you grind the inner race of the bearing? You should heat it up before installing on the shaft. Looking forward to the next video! Keep posting :)
It's called a setup bearing. It's a common practice when setting up diffs as it allows removal to add or take away shims before committing to pressing on the final bearing. You can buy them like this but they cost more.

There is just one style. They all open up. Other jeeps open different, but the XJs are all the same.

I’ve commented on your videos before and need to ask if it’s a good idea buying a 2000 year model XJ? I read they are prone to cracked heads? Or is it a simple fix and should not be a dealbreaker?
Is it a 4.0? The 2000 and 2001 4.0 had a slightly different head. Apparently, it is prone to cracking in one specific place. I wouldn't say it's a deal brakes as many run this head without issue. If it did crack, then the head can be swapped for a better head. I certainly wouldn't let this put you off if the jeep is in good condition.
@@WorkshoptoWilderness they are listed on Blocket and yes, 4.0. Prices are between 60-70.000 kronor. I saw a good 1995 model last week but it got sold fast. Now I see two green ones, a 2000 at 59.000 and a 2001 at 68.000.
They look good in the pictures, but I guess I need to see them live.
I looked it up for years 1999, plus had the 0331, and it doesn't have enough nickle in the iron casting. Apparently, it can crack easier. It also mentioned that this doesn't happen to all of the years, so it's kind of a gamble. Apparently, some run fine for the whole of the engines life. I would go for it personally.

It sounds like the perfect use for the vehicle. Hopefully, the one you are looking for is in decent condition. Are you in Sweden? If so, is the jeep in the north or south?
How did you make the tires with bolts or what is that
They are tungsten studs that you shoot into the tire with a gun. It's a legal requirement here in the winter. The grooving I've done with a tire grooving tool to make them hold snow better.
