Heart rate variability

  • This videoscribe explains how the vagus nerve regulates the fight and flight response and how measurement of heart rate variability provides a moment to moment window on the state of vagus influence on the "unconscious" autonomic nervous system. This, in turn, provides measurable physiological insights to "inner balance" and "wellness". Loss of normal heart rate variability is an early warning sign of both psychological and physical ill health. Continuous 72 hour heart rate variability can be measured using a lightweight wearable device (Bodyguard 2) providing individuals with physiological information on vagus tone, stress (good and bad) and, perhaps most important, recovery and restoration. The videoscribe explains the importance of the vagus in modulating emotional and physical well being. This neurophysiology has only recently been described by Professor Stephen Porges in his work "The Polyvagal Theory" and although not yet taught to healthcare professionals, measuring and monitoring the vagus nerve is likely to become increasingly important to the understanding health, wellbeing and the factors contributing to ill health.

Thank you for this video, Dr. Epstein! It is very useful to explain the concept of HRV and its importance in such an intuitive way!

Almost all good in this description. One important adjustment: the danger response is actually FLight , then fight (Off, because I cannot leave, so I try to make you leave). Our dominance based socialisation cannot accept that we, like gazelles, were preyed upon by leopards (no less! See book Man The Hunted) and our first response would be to leave, scatter, anything but risky fighting. Our response reaction wants to protect us, so even drop and be still (freeze or flop) is a common reaction stigmatised by our culture. I am thrilled to hear about the HRV assessment possibility in England.

This is one of the few videos that puts emphasis on how the parasympathetic system is responsible for turning off and turning on the fight or flight.
I’m sure most people still aren’t aware that fight or flight doesn’t have an off switch in the sympathetic nervous system.
Understanding this shows how important it is to retrain your parasympathetic nervous system. Which is super important in long Covid patients and childhood abuse/trauma victims. As well as other people suffering from PTSD or addictions.

Coherence breathing, singing, dancing, drawing, working with your hands are all great ways to regulate the parasympathetic nervous system.
I focus on coherence breathing. This can be done at anytime by breathing continuously in and out for 6secs each, 10mins at a time, 3x a day.

Hard to trust a video that turns into an ad in the last 30 seconds.
