  • How to stop your motorcycle battery from going flat.
Winter is nearly upon us and you have decided it's time to store your bike until the warmer, and drier weather arrives. But what is the best way to look after your motorcycle battery and how do you prevent it from going flat when you are not using your bike?
In this video, I show you a product which I've used for years, a Battery Optimiser or a Trickle Charger as it is sometimes called. I'll explain how it works and show you how to fit it yourself onto your motorcycle.
As always if you have any questions please leave them in the comments.
This is not a sponsored video, it's another of my own personal recommendations.
I've included a few links for a variety of Battery Optimisers, before purchasing, please make sure the Optimiser is compatible with your motorcycle's battery.
    Products used:
Oxford Oximiser 900 as shown in video amzn.to/3n6aiQZ
Oxford Oximiser 3X Motorcycle Battery Charger & Optimiser amzn.to/3D6qkA1
This is the model I'm currently using:
    Oxford EL572 Oximiser 900 - 888 amzn.to/3HeOvPd

Thanks for the comments and messages. I would like to highlight a couple of things which have been kindly brought to my attention.
    1. When disconnecting the battery, it is advised to do it in a particular order, as I have! 😊
Disconnect the Negative (-) first before disconnecting the Positive (+).
When connecting the battery you connect the Positive (+) first and then the Negative (-).
    2. ALWAYS check you buy an Optimiser which is suitable for the battery fitted to your bike. I’ll add more information about this soon but just check your battery first before ordering.
    3. The Optimiser lead connected to the battery can also be used to power heated garments as on many products they have the same fitting. You may want to bare that in mind when deciding where to run the lead.
Keep those comments and tips coming in guys! 😁👍

I rent a storage unit for too many $$$ but unfortunately it has no power or lighting of any kind. If the weather turns bad I need to remove the battery from my bike by removing the side fairings and take it home to put it on a trickle charger. I have tried to find a self contained trickle charger with a USB or SAE lead but they don’t seem to exist.
    Excellent videos. Very informative.

Great clip Phil, would always recommend one for your motorcycle especially if not in daily use. I have had various speedtrlples over the years and all benefited from a smart trickle charger. Currently have the 2012, 1050s had it for years love it would never part with it and always had the charger fitted daily. All the best from Scotland .

Great video I made a little RUclips shorts video showing mine. I just bought myself the same one. I don’t have power to my garage so I got a solar panel, battery and an inverter and the sun charges my bike for me over winter 😂 totally more expansive than getting power to the garage but it was fun

Good vlog Phil, I like your easy going style, reading some of the other comments I remembered that years ago before trickle chargers were invented I used to remove the battery, place it on a plastic tray and put it in the airing cupboard (with mum's permission of course!! lol as batteries love warm dry conditions) one question though, I'm surprised someone as fussy as yourself (that's a compliment not a critisism) doesn't smear a blob of vaseline over the battery terminals as protection from damp. I hope you do make a winterising vlog, it would be interesting to compare to my preparation.

Hi David. Thanks for the encouragement, I’m trying my best to be natural on camera but it takes practice! 🤣 The good old days of always being in trouble with mum! 😁👍 Actually, I do have a tub of Vaseline and have used it for years, even on my Speed. However, I did read a blog recently where someone was questioning the use of Vaseline which I’ll explore again soon!
Thanks for the interest, I’ll have a think about a winter video 😁👍

Good video Phil as per👍🏼. Hope your using an Optimate as thats what i use and the one I'd recommend. Far superior build quality in comparison to Oxford. Top tip as well you can now by a single duel charger that will auto detect if the bikes are lithium ion or lead and adjust accordingly so if you ever end up with a different battery type you DONT need to buy another charger😃

Brilliant video…..I have just taken delivery of my Honda NC750XDCT…..I live in Jersey, it’s winter, it’s wet, it’s horrible….so my bike will get little use over the coming few months…I bought a trickle battery charger…..now I can follow your instructions and connect it all up, I assume your instructions are for all bike batteries, my manual does not suggest trickle chargers, but then do any…..I’ll fit my charger up next and look forward to better weather to get out and about…thanks for sharing, I have just subscribed as well..cheers….Karl

@@TheAdventuresofPhilJones hi Phil…well I managed fitting my trickle charger, the battery is the standard version…not Lithium….to get into the battery space was a nightmare…the manual states clips that require being both pushed in to release, then pull out, however two similar clips on the side of the battery cover would not shift no matter what…I did try a screwdriver just in case, nothing happened…..well brute force had to be applied….success, however I did find that indeed these so called clips did have small cross head screws….ahhhh….well I struggled to get it all back..not ideal, so if and when said crap clips and partial screwed in clip fail, I’ll put Velcro around the cover, then it will be very easy to take off and put on….good lord Honda manuals…..beggars belief, upside though, my trickle unit works….the bike now will have a healthy battery over coming few months of winter….gee what a morning, would have been banned by RUclips if I had filmed my work today, air very very blue…..cheers Phil

Another really helpful video Phil! Can I ask, is it a personal preference of what people use? For example I know someone who doesn't use one, and just ensures they run their bike once a week during winter 🤔

    • @TheAdventuresofPhilJones
      @TheAdventuresofPhilJones  2 года назад

Thanks so much, Georgia. 😊 That’s a really good question! 🤔 I used to run my bike and car every few weeks throughout the winter months. These days I prefer to use an optimiser as it is designed to improve the health of the battery on a long term basis. In my experience, bikers prefer a trickle charger if the bike isn’t being used, which includes during the summer months too. Perhaps I’ll add a Poll on the community page and Instagram. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😁👍

  • @bowwave59

    Nice.video 👍
I think your optimiser needs to be either a lead acid/ gel battery only or Lithium battery charger .
Do they make a trickle charger that will charger both types of battery?
You could do a follow up video covering the difference between lead acid & lithium batteries on a bike. 👍

    • @TheAdventuresofPhilJones

Thanks Paul. I did mention in the description to check you buy the correct optimiser for your battery. 👍
I’ve asked Demon Tweeks and they replied with “Depending if it's a 12 or 6 volt battery, CTEK do the following item www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/ctek-pro25-professional-battery-charger-cte40-198/ which is suitable for acid or lithium-Ion” 👍
