Haha you know it!!!
You're bringing back fond memories for me. I worked at the ball park, so I never had to pay. I remember all the groupies bragging that they were "on the list". They behaved like they were royalty. I remember that some people who provided transportation or housing to the players would get treated to box seat tickets that the non American players would chip in for them. Thanks for the memories, Matt!
Glad to hear that , you went through so
Much it is a great accomplishment to even spend 1 day in the major leagues.
I remember a line from a movie about Ron leflore a coach told him “ even the worst player in the league is still a major leaguer!!”
Thanks so much!!!
I had a coach who played for the Dodgers in the 1970s. He had a 10-year major league career (as a utility player). He showed me a gold card (not real gold) that let him get into any regular season game in retirement. I may be misremembering, though. Does this ring a bell?
Dan Lazar great question! I’ve heard the same, but I’ve heard it various with the team...
Flew clear to New York because Randy Johnson was a friend of a family friend. Half expected to not have tickets at will call when we walked up, but they they were. Great tickets to old Yankee stadium. Raises my opinion of Johnson higher knowing they weren’t free and he didn’t know us per se.
Thanks for sharing!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I really enjoy Matt's videos and I don't question his experience when it comes to answering questions but does anyone think that someone like Mike Trout has to pay a dime for tickets regardless of Spring training or believe that he goes through the same process that other players like Matt would need have to. I can't imagine that Mr Yankee Derek Jeter was going through the same process as lesser players. Hey Matt, I don't know if you ever did a video regarding the way in which the top players on a MLB team were treated compared to the non-stars. Was it like night and day when it came to the perks and how they were treated by the team as compared to the other players such as yourself?
Was just watching the channel and looked you up on Wikipedia and I never knew you played for my towns minor league team, the Syracuse chiefs. Cool stuff
Yup! I enjoyed it out there! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Appreciate your videos... Based on my experience, I have a friend who works at the MLB level and when his team was in the playoffs and on the road in my town I was able to get playoff tickets from him but reimbursed him for the face value of the tickets. I am sure he had a limited number of comps but anyone else that exceeded the threshold came out of his own pocket.
Thanks!!! Thanks for sharing!
These are things I've always wondered about! Thank you!!!
How about communicating with international players who don't speak English? How do they communicate with players, coaches and managers?
Ben Young Ohtani has a translator that goes out with a coach at a mound visit
Ben Young Spanish is pretty common in the USA and there are always a good number of bilingual players/coaches in each team
I’ll make a video! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I'm guessing Alfonso Soriano was pretty useful. Spanish was his first language. Then he played in Japan and picked up Japanese. English was his 3rd language, but he spoje that just fine too. That probably covers about 99% of MLB players right there.
they need to learn english
First off I’ve been watching your videos for a few weeks now. You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. I had a question though. What can you negotiate into your contract? I’ve heard of the more well known ones like Bobby Bonilla who’ll be paid by the Mets for years to come. But what about other things? Like say you wanted certain privileges? I’m not sure. But can you get things other than money negotiated into your contract?
Thanks!!!! I literally negotiated only the salary and nothing else! Thanks for watching and commenting!
So could you negotiate other things into your contract?
Most areas that have pro (or even college) sports teams have added an "entertainment tax" or "facilities tax" to the value of the ticket - so that's why you, the player, still have to pay that portion. In many cases municipal bonds funded a significant portion of the construction costs of that stadium or arena - so they (local or state government) want their money back in the form of those taxes.
Got ya! Thanks for sharing! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Can you negotiate free tickets into your contract?
i took a tour at the phillies stadium and they said jim thome had a club box built into is contract
Hmmm good question. I was never good enough to do that lol
Actually, that was written into Dave Winfield's contract that the Yankee organization contribute so many tickets for youth programs that Winfield was involved in. Giving directly to the foundation gave the Yankees the tax deduction. Everything in life is negotiable and yes, a player could negotiate tickets. However, that would be considered compensation and would be taxable under federal, state and possibly local taxes. Remember that nearly any benefit over $25 can be taxable unless it is specifically excluded from income.
Free tickets are in the MLB CBA possibly. I know that the NBA and NHL CBA's have a certain amount they get for free
Jake Arrieta negotiated a suite/box into his contract while he played on the Phillies
Surprised to hear you have to pay for ALL of your tickets at the major level. I'd be curious what kind of seats players have access to for the bigger games. Can't see putting your folks up in the nosebleeds. But then again, I can't see vacant primo Cubs/Cards tickets available by the bunches.
Great seats! Very close to the field. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I got 4 free tickets from the tallest player in MLB history: Jon Rauch. Behind home plate at Fenway, when his Nationals came to visit. Really nice guy and was into GTO's like me.
Hey Matt,
Can you talk about friendships in the MLB?
Will do!!!
I figured you would get a few free tickets per game.. Pete Kozma got me tickets to a couple games back in 2015 when he was with the Cards and the tickets say Ticket $0.00 Tax $0.00.. maybe it varies by team?
What do you think about Barry Bonds
Joeyjoejr100 He’s my favorite player so I want to know too! Lol
Stephen Dre He’s a fucking cheater that’s what he is
best player of all time
I think it would be cool if you got wade leblanc to join you for a video especially if you still stay in contact with him
Me too!!!!
Hey Matt, first I’d like to say great content. It’s awesome to hear these sort of things from a former professional athlete so thank you for sharing. Do you mind answering this question? When you made it to the bigs how was the team chemistry your first day or week or month in the club house? Like the veterans or super stars.. were they friendly? Did they take the time to even know your name? What about opposing teams? Did you ever try to strike up a conversation etc? I had a friend in the nfl and he plays for the Cleveland Browns and he says some of the veterans don’t know his name and call him by his number after two season still (I don’t believe him). Sorry for the long comment and thank you again!
Thanks and good question! I’ll try to answer that in a video!
Love this channel, keep up the good work sir.
Thanks!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Great video!! I just want you to make a video on how your relationship with other mlb players you play with is as today ?? If you still keep in contact with any of them.
Thanks and will do!!!
Always coming out with great content! Love it buddy!
Thanks!!!!
Enjoy your vids Matt. Thanks! Question is how about the quality of the tickets you are able to get for the fam n friends. Are they decent or nosebleeds or whatever is available? Thanks again.
Thanks!!! Very good tickets! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Just subscribed Matt love the videos, not any other ex mlb players or for better terms retired mlb players lol making videos like you! Anyway do a video on players cheating like corked bats, steroids, pine tar etc! Keep the vids coming!
Thanks!!! And will do! Thanks for watching!
Mr. Antonelli, were there ever any players on the padres or any of the minor league teams you played on ever respond to fan mail?
I feel like a lot of players responded. Some just get a ton of mail each day so tough to respond to everyone
@@AntonelliBaseball Wow this is so cool. Thanks for responding.
@@radleyssportscenter441 👍
I got free tix to a major league game once. I noticed the price on the ticket was $0.00. The person wasn’t a player, he was on the broadcast team. So did he pay the taxes on the tix just like the players?
I’m guessing so, but not 100% sure
@antonelli baseball what is the parking situation? How do you avoid traffic coming and going from the stadium?
Park in players garage. Traffic you are on your own. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball yeah it's a cool very unique channel well done too. I'm from MA too maybe played against you growing up haha
Matt how come in the majors if the pitcher throws to the plate and the ball nicks the dirt why does the umpire get rid of the ball? Is the ball that bad to go back in play? And were does the ball go? Used for BP??
Do you get to choose the seating selection or is there an assigned area for players' friends and family?
It’s assigned. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Can you stipulate X amount of free tickets in your contract? How often do wives go to games? Great job as always. Nice snark about Minor League Spring Training...
A follow up: what is the biggest supporting crowd showed up to see you play as a professional? I think u mentioned 20 tickets but does that also include those to bought their own.
Probably 20 I’d say. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Matt - Thanks for the Videos. It's quite surprising hearing about all the perks that you assume are free for players, but actually cost money for the player. What I am wondering is, are a lot of these perks offered for free i.e. tickets, clothing, equipment etc.. to "top-tier" players? No disrespect intended to you, just curious if clubs look after more "expensive" players. Thanks from Australia!
Good question and I’m not 100%. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Pawtucket RI isn't that far from Peabody Ma. You don't want your family and friends to see you in Pawtucket though. Bad things happen there.
Haha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Do you think asking teammates for tickets had any impact on the batting average?
How much does it impact a game if someone uses a illegal bat and doesn't get caught like longer barrel or a fat barrel or tar higher up on the bat barrel
Unspherdcomb6 tar too far up the bat is only banned because it discolors the ball. There's no performance benefit to it.
That’s a good question I’m really not sure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
How do olde players/vets treat younger players or rookies?
Did any of your teammates prank you or have you seen anyone prank people?
Not a ton of pranks but I’ll try to think of some! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Matt. Do you have a card that allows you to attend any MLB game since you played?
Nah I wish!
Players need 8 years of service time to qualify for the MLB Lifetime Pass. Even with that it is just you and one guest - and only during the regular season (NOT the post-season).
The clubs have to add the face value of the MLB tickets under federal and state tax law. Considering that established major league players are at the top tax bracket, the cost of giving a lot of tickets can be substantial. Also, spring training tickets are NOT the massive bargain that they once were. Many places are up to $20-25 PP.
Wow crazy!!! Thanks for watching our videos!
Love your videos!!
Thanks a bunch!!!!
As a retired former MLB player, is it true, just you yourself, can go watch any mlb in the stadium for free, with a pass?
That is false. I wish it were true though! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Is the pay in the majors stretched out for 12 months or the months in the season
Months of season. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Who was the hardest pitcher to hit against in your career
Are you still doing The weekly giveaway.
6:30 to 6:55 had me dyeing!
wasn't that funny jesus
What do you do with game used Jerseys?
In my house! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Your great man
Did you ever play in Dayton ? They sell out every game
Nope never did but watched a game as a fan there. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I heard there are like passes for family sort of like the passes that staff wear on their neck but obviously for family and friends they don't have access to the same stuff is that true?
There are passes but they still need tickets. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Antonelli Baseball thanks for replying!:)
Describe what it's like facing a knuckle ball pitcher.
Thrilling. And you have the best seat in the house.
I heard that former pros get a lifetime ticket to any MLB game. Any truth to that? Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Nah not true! At least not for me. Thanks for watching and commenting!
not all former pros, just those with at least 8 years of service time.
On your uniforms did you wear
A lighter weight one for summer and a heavier one the fall and early spring?
They make a lighter weight one now called “ cool base “ which is nice you don’t sweat as much but the heavier one would keep you warmer when playing in your places like New York or Detroit
Are you in free agency
I’m on the sofa now! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Come on Matt! Gotta start earning some of that money!
I'm trying!!! Thanks a bunch for watching our stuff and commenting!
How about talking about the major league golden ticket for players with 8+ years of service
Can you guys get in trouble for talking back to a heckler ?
what about the gold card lifetime pass?
You need 8 years of major league service time, I don't think Matt had enough to qualify.
@@mikebarnes2294 Roger that.
Didn’t know mlb tickets weren’t free. The independent minor league team I worked for tickets were free just like ur minor league tickets. I just assumed it would be the same in the majors
I thought that as well. I currently work in independent baseball and anyone in the clubhouse can get tickets. There's been times where the name of the player wasn't written down, just the people coming and the number of tickets.
Yup gotta pay! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Absolutely Matt! If you could I'd be great to see a video on how the Clubhouse Managers/ bat boys are in the majors. I'm currently a Clubhouse Manager in independent ball and want to possibly get to MLB that way
At MLB level it probably becomes a tax issue as well as team revenue issue. As he said, the 4 tix he was comped amounted to roughly 2000$.
Who the hell gave the thumb down? Come on
Seriously!!!!
What are your favorite baseball themed movies?
What was your game day routine like? Did you have any superstitions?
I have a few videos on it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
How you doing Matt?
Awesome!!!!
Don’t rule out a comeback into the majors just yet, your still young .
Look at other people that have come back
Jimmy Morris , remember Marcus Dupree was out of pro football for 10 years played briefly in the defunct USFL
Ended up coming back to the NfL and played 2 years for the Rams, how about
Boxer Jim Braddock back in the 1930s
Broke his hand made a comeback and Won the heavyweight title , God could heal your hand completely and make it possible for you to play once again.
Hey thanks!!! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Craig Shafer Is there some awesome new doctor on the scene named Dr. God?
Remi Cooper
That’s right God he can overrule anyone
Or anything .
Craig Shafer ... And thats why millions of children starve to death every year.
Was enjoying watching some of the old content. Then you dropped the bomb of not knowing anything about playoff tickets. Not sure how to feel now. Great videos though.
I wish I could have played in the playoffs too
Got a few buddies in mlb i supported thru minors now they big time me it sucks
by the way great channel
You can forget your 1-29 slump. Someone just went 0-30 and counting...
Haha yup!!!!
I go to a minor or major league game 5-6 nights a week NEVER pay for tickets #itsprettycool

Do you get a pension since you had to
Retire because of your injury ?
I get a percentage since I played for a year. Thanks for watching and commenting!
What happens when you get traded and you play your old team but know their signs
They will sometimes change the signs for when they play you. Or at least the indicator. Thanks for watching and commenting!
the tickets are free, they just are paying the taxes. since the tickets have value, then have to pay the taxman for that value you are receiving. the taxman always gets his cut. a 50 dollar ticket at 7% is only 3.50.
Nah it’s more than that. It’s counts towards your earnings so you pay around 40-50%
Are homerun derby balls regulation balls?!? Seriously
That's a good quesiton. I'm guessing they wind them a little tighter! Thanks for watching!
MLB super star players (bryce harper, judge, trout, altuve) don't pay for anything.
Probably not! Thanks for watching and commenting!
How many free Plate Crates do you get per game?
*F E L L A S*
Who is the one bum who always dislikes
Greg Maddux
Haha good question!!!!!
Angel Hernandez
I don’t play guitar. But I could play a better riff than that intro.
Haha! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Am I mistaken, or was he only in the major's for a month anyways? He keeps saying his 1st month.. You mean your entire Major league career.
Give the topic. Then the intro. Then the rest of the content.
Thanks! Thanks for watching and commenting!
This was awkward....
Haha why? Thanks so much for watching!!!
When did you play for the AAA Yankees? I was a groundskeeper for them for 3 seasons. I even had to clean up your millions of sunflower seeds in the dugout and clubhouse every few weeks! (first year) lol
Your great man
Oh
