I hand-sew, and I wondered how similar wound suturing was, so I watched a few videos. Actual sewing technique is very different of course, since fabric is much thinner than tissue, you use overlaps of fabric to connect two pieces instead of pushing them together, and you can work from the inside out. What surprised me the most was the use of the needle driver, but I expect that it allows you to use greater force and precision, and work more hygienically.
That said, this horizontal version of mattress suturing is almost exactly what I would use to connect pieces of knitting invisibly, just with the technique repeated across the entire edge and only knotting it at the end. It's called the mattress stitch (so probably very related), and useful for knitwork because it has low tension. I've also used it for fabric repairs when a tear is relatively straight and not too wide, difference of course being that I fold two pieces of overlay to the inside because I cannot expect them to close by themselves, and the stitches are far smaller and more numerous. I'm very interested to know which stitches originally came from sewing, and which ones were developed for suturing. The vertical version of this suturing method, for example, has no application in sewing.
