If you're looking for a way to make a little side income then consider making money with plants in your backyard by rooting cuttings and selling them. Start a little backyard nursery with very little investment.
We've finally come full circle with the English Laurel cuttings. It's been a year since we set up the propagation frame and taken the cuttings and they've grown into beautiful saleable plants.

Your passion towards gardening is beautiful to watch. Thank you Mike.
"I just want to go swimming in them!" LOL. That cracked me up because I am so obsessed with my plants and propagating plants also. I made some extra money this summer selling a few plants here and there. I loved it so much I want to do more. My hubby says I've found my calling haha. Thanks for all the knowledge you share!
It's a lot of fun, isn't it!
@@MikeKincaid79 what fertilizer do you use to grow your plants
You are literally standing in my dream!!! A nice size greenhouse, surrounded by beautiful plants......AND the potential to make some money with what I LOVE. It truly doesn't get any better than that!!!! Thanks so much for sharing :)
Wow, thanks! Sometimes I need to hear that from someone else. I get use to all this after 13 years of having it set up. Believe it or not I have plans to tear it all down and build a bigger one in its place.
@@MikeKincaid79 I know what you mean...we get used to having certain things and may forget just how AWESOME it is!! If you still have room on the property, 'd build a bigger one next to or near this one instead of tearing this one down 😉
I'm super excited since watching your video....the only way to live our dreams is to get started! I look forward to watching your other videos, I've got lots to learn 😊
“I just wanna go swim in them”
Haha
Fabulous. Love the energy.
Come on over and take a dive, haha
I LOVE YOU! I have never heard someone who matches my excitement and passion for growing plants and being able to live off the benefits in so many ways. 💖
simply amazing, im still watching and learning, way to go little bro, you have taught an old dog new tricks.
thank you sweetie, im melvin osborne on facebook
Mike your plants LOVE you just as much as you love them. It shows from the way they thrive.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍9
Just a pointer, when using “used black plastic pots”, remember to clean them out and dip in a mild bleach water..and set out in the sun.
Why?
@@CHloE748 to get rid of any bacterial or fungal problems that could affect the next plant that's in the pot.
Which will increase the amount of time spent significantly. but its important.
@Anonymous City it's not about the .15, it's about the plastic waste that's poisoning the planet. Cool video, though. Contagious enthusiasm! 🙏
Thank you for the caution. Much appreciated.
Kim from Kennewick here. Love your enthusiasm. I hold the same type of passion for growing!
I absolutely love your enthusiasm in all your videos. It’s like you can make people believe in themselves.
Well I believe in ya if nothing else, lol.
Those are growing wild on the hillside behind us! I never knew what they were until I watched this video! They do grow at a fast rate when their roots go deep & find a water source!
Love your enthusiasm man. I feel the same way when I get stuff to grow. I'm always outside doing commentary like it's a football game, lol
It's exciting creating something out of nothing.
That's awesome Mike! Can't wait to see them in the planted in the yard.

Mike, you are a wonderful person that can make anything grow, plants, kids, even rocks, I just want to say you are, and your family, my go to people, I don't know what I would do without you guys. Love you all so much. 😁😁😊🤗🤗🤣🤣🙃🙃😇😇
Well, you're family now, Glenda, and I'm glad you're a part of it.
That's pretty darn amazing. I am wanting to start cuttings from my huge Honeysuckle. It got so big it dragged the trellis the previous owner of the property have grown it on right off the side of the Workshop. You have inspired me. I got a huge pile of chipped branches a couple years ago from a tree service who chopped down a huge Alder Tree for me. It has shrunk by half now so thinking it is now perfect to use for a starter mix. I used the top for mulch in my back garden paths and the lower I go the finer it seems to be. I credit the use of that to you ... must have been in my future to use it as such. Thanks for sharing so much in your videos. Hope you keep them coming ... : )
So glad the wood chips are working for you. It makes a beautiful mulch!
They look great, thumbs up Mike.
Thanks, Mike!

Wow they certainly came along well in one year. Brilliant and it just shows exactly how you can propagate your plants to make hundreds if not thousands of new plants and increase stocks
Crazy how fast they grow! Great channel, by the way.

Great video Mike...I started a bunch of Mimosa Trees this year, growing them in 1 gallon pots. I made quite a bit from selling just these alone :)
Sweet!
Where did you sell them?
Wow... Paitence & Time. Love it.

You should check out Pineapple Guava. It makes a beautiful hedge with silvery fuzz on the underside of the leaves, delightful edible flowers and with more than one plant you get yummy fruit that taste like the flower and falls to the ground when ripe. I know it will grow well for you, I have had it in my yard for 8 years and if I was not pruning it, it would be 10-12 feet tall. It does fine in clay soil too even though it is not it's preference.
I like fruiting hedges. Thought about planting figs along the front of my property but they lose their leaves and I'm looking for an evergreen hedge.
@@MikeKincaid79 Pineapple Guava is evergreen, that is why I love it for a hedge.
Oh cool, can it grow in 8b?
@@MikeKincaid79 Yes, I have been growing it for 8 years and the temps got down to ten degrees with no problems. I just have not been able to propagate it. I could get you a bunch of cuttings if you propagate some for me too!
Keep doing what you're doing!
Wow, that's amazing I remember when you planted those. Great job!!!!
Thanks Ralph! They sure have grown.
I remember when he planted them as well, I love propagating plants too, I just don't have the right set up and the energy.🙄

That would be awesome Mike, you just need to move 3000miles though.🤗🤗💞
Holy Cow, it's absolutely amazing the amount of growth those plants have put on in one short year! Mike, I can't wait to see these planted along side your property to block the sounds from the road. I wish I could grow English Laurel, but it isn't hardy here in my zone 5 (boohoo sniff sniff):0( Please do more follow up videos on these beautiful plants!

That is awesome brother I just started propagating myself this year learning a lot of tips from you you keep keeping the passion for what you do I love watching this it encourages me every day to go out at least try one of these days I’ll get it and you’re going to help me along the way
That's it, just keep trying and working at it and you'll be a master. "Keep choosing the same thing"
Cooking bay is Laurus nobilis, hedging Laurel is prunus laurocerasus. Correct Latin name is Important especially if you want to eat it.
Great stuff. We had these as a hedge growing up. A lot of work keeping them hedged every year but great as a privacy screen and they grow tall
I love these plants as they get bigger. My intention is to plant them out where they can grow huge and naturally, without pruning much. We have a lot of property so it won't be a problem.
Great video! Swimming in them was great.
Haha, I love these English laurel, just beautiful plants if you have the space.
@@MikeKincaid79 and the right zone. One half of our property is basically zone 3 and the other is 4b. And if the deer qnd bear don't get to everything, the mice and chipmunks like to have their fill too. Guess I have to propagate more to feed the neighborhood. Any idea what zones English laurel grow in?
Zone 6-9 so you're probably too cold for them but if I lived in an area like yours I'd look into growing a hedge of doublefile viburnum.
@@MikeKincaid79 Great tip. Thank you!
Love your enthusiasm! I have to go google what an English Laurel looks like--you've got me hooked!
Caught another fish!
I wonder if I can do this with boxwood. I want a hedge so much. We have had about eight scraggly, sick, damaged or dead trees removed from the front of our property, and I am trying to get the area “spruced up.”
This man is the Steve Irwin of plants
Best compliment ever!

I think this is the Canadian guy I just heard about from a Reddit thread video. And if so, hello! I love gardening and really want to learn how to care for plants so hopefully this channel will help me learn
That's what it's all about here. Welcome to the family! By the way, I'm American but I live close enough to the Canadian border.
I love watching your videos. I’m fairly local to you. I near Bremerton Washington. Please do more vids like this. It is giving me inspiration to try my own side gig!
Sure, I can work on that. I never did many videos of making money with plants because some people get really turned off when you start bringing money into it (which I always think is weird), I mean who doesn't like more money, haha.
Mike Kincaid or maybe make vids for Facebook. Keep it separated?
Very cool! If you go plant show us what they look like. Then you could show us in another year! Amazing results. Just a quick question. How do you keep them nice and viable until you can get them in the soil at home? I took some forcinthia cuttings and by the time I got home a few hours later it was a no go too droopy and dried up.
Place in a plastic bag and spray with water, then tie the bag closed until you get home. If I'm going to be a few hours or longer, I take a cooler with me and a bag with a spray bottle.
Incredible! Great job as always. Your hand seems good as new!😃
Looks good on the outside but doesn't really work very well. I'm hoping for more mobility out of the finger over the next 4 weeks now that I've started using my hand again in PT.
Mike, before you know it, it will be fine. Trust me! Take care.
Enjoyed your excitement for cuttings and the rooting success. I’m in Ontario with a 5.5/6 growing zone. Regardless I’ve for the first time I have rooted coral bells with great success, I will try rhododendrons and hopefully have some luck.
Glad you're having success, good luck with the rhododendrons!
We live in Washington State and I would be required to have a business license, and a horticulture license. To sell to nurseries. We have an abundance of baby Douglas fir and pine trees we’d like to pot up and sell. I’d also like to propagate many of our wild trees and shrubs like roses and elderberry, lilacs. And wildflowers. I pulled a few suckers of wild lilac and planted them on our new property. That are doing well and I’m seeing new growth.
Thanks for the video and sharing all your great ideas. Hope your pinky is much better now. 😇
It's still attached to my hand. That's the best I can say, lol.
Nice one Mike
Thanks
Fantastic video, Mike! Your passion for horticulture is absolutely amazing. I wonder as a youngster if you grew plants or was it a latent gift that blossomed in adulthood.
My Dad was an avid vegetable gardening so I was always working in gardens growing up. I didn't discover taking cuttings until I was older.
Very beautiful plants.
I didn't realize English laurel needed any help being propagated. ;-)
Denis Dooley I must suck at it. I stuck 200 cuttings and only got 3 to root. Next time I’ll build that box.
@@robs9574 I actually have no idea how difficult it is to strike cuttings from Cherry Laurel, I just know it's invasive in these parts from the seeds. It's not as bad as Butterfly Bush or English Ivy, but it's definitely causing problems in the Pacific Northwest and if I can dissuade anyone for using it for any reason, I'm happy to suggest good substitutes.
Amazing ideas
I propagate putinia plants as per your advice and find positive result
Awesome! So glad to hear it.
great follow-up video mike. things really happen fast around your place. it's gonna close off any sound from the road. say, whatever happened to your morphing fish? have the babies gotten any babies? later, carmine.
The fish are doing great and growing well. I'll have to do a follow up. Hadn't done a video on that in awhile because of all the plant videos but I'll get one up again.
Thanks for sharing this Mike. It's amazing to see how fast they grew! Love your videos and enthusiasm :)
Thanks Cleo, they sure did grow fast and that's what makes these plants so much fun.
You should do another project like this one
I'll put my mind to it.

What zone are you in?
I dont have space for cuttings. But I sell potted plants from doing divisions in the garden. :)
Sounds like you've got a system figured out.
Alright alright alright 👍
Mike - Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Im also in Pierce county and would love to know what landscaping companies you purchase from. I need to move a few rhoadies and learning how to cut and propagate is making my lady happy that we get to keep them :)
I get my bark from Julie's Construction in Mckenna.
Where did you buy that pile of pot soil. The texture is really good. Please guide where to buy that soil for best price?
Great video Mike, I appreciate your enthusiasm and resourcefulness, and also your willingness to share the information. I am now a new subscriber. I also watched your video on how to package and ship plants in the mail, which was incredibly helpful. Does English Laurel grow in California? I live in Santa Barbara, which is in Central California. just about everything grows here.
It's a hardy plant and I'd assume it will grow there but I don't have any personal experience with growing laurel in your location. Beautiful place though. My ship (the Abraham Lincoln) pulled into Santa Barbara for a visit when I was in the Navy, back in 1999.
Would they grow that big if you used 10cm pots instead of 1 gallon pots.1 gallon pots are so expensive!Love your videos!
They'll grow fine in smaller pots until you can get them planted. They may not get this big but close to it. Eventually, the pot size will restrict the growth.
So good
Thanks!
Wow, amazing!!
Thank you, Teresa!
Great work, Mike! I just clipped what I was pretty sure are cherry laurel cuttings. I believe they had some smaller white flowers at some point. Should I expect to use the same process with same success? Got confused reading about propagating different types of laurel.. some articles said they're difficult.. but which ones?
They're the same plant and very easy to propagate!
Hi, thanks for share
You're welcome Lili
Really good info, thank you 🇬🇧
No problem Jon 👍
Thank you. I need to find the inexpensive potting material in Central Alabama. Any ideas?
This was an incredible video. Any chance that you will show how to prune new shrubbery or trees?

@@MikeKincaid79 Thank you. I'll look for them. Hope your recovery is coming along smoothly. You'll back to normal (if that is possible LOL) before you know it!

Hello really truly love your video s all of them thumb ☝ thumb ☝ thumb ☝
Glad to hear it, Samiy!
I love your video’s
Thanks, Gina! Glad you're enjoying them.
Mike you need to tell people that depending on there state they need licenses and permits to legally sell plants. Also you might need a business license. You get caught shipping plants your in for a big fine. This is to protect other states or countries from diseases or and insects. People, check into the laws for your state, do it legally or pay a huge fine or jail time.
What? You must be talking about Moscow. Where in North America is a person not allow to sell a plant. That's Bullshit!
@@billastell3753 Where in N. America does the Government not want a cut? LOL
I asked where you can't sell a plant. I live in NA and there is no Government after a cut if I sell a plant. Is the Government where you live after a cut. If so where do you live? JES Smith is scaring folks for who knows what reason.
The original poster is correct, particularly if you intend to set yourself up as a nursery or sell to other nurseries or to certain states, at least in the United States. If your goal is to just have a 'yard sale' once a year there probably won't be a problem. It's easy to follow the rules. ^ ^
JES Smith said "they need licenses and permits to legally sell plants." That is NOT correct in any jurisdiction! Of course it is a matter of scale. If it becomes a business and more than a hobby taxes and licenses may raise their ugly heads.
When do you take clippings of rhododendrons? Awesome work
Thanks. Take the cuttings in late summer, August time frame.
Hey, Mike. Thanks for all the incredible content. I’ve made my way through most of your videos and am subscribed with my alerts on. I purchased your videos on building the frame and was hoping to ask you two questions:
1. I inherited a high tunnel that I am going to put plastic on and have use of for plant propagation. Will this space constitute “indirect sunlight,” as you say is required for the propagation frame?
2. I got a quote for the glass piece to go over the top and am going to take the dive, however it is quite expensive at $240. I expect it to last forever, especially if this frame is in the high tunnel. Do you think I should try to build it out with another type of cover?
3. Thank you again.
I have white plastic on mine that provides 50% shade and sometimes even that warms up the frame too much. The most ideal location is on the north side of a building so that no direct sun hits the glass. I don't keep my frames in my hoop house just for this reason. I did that propagation project with the english laurel in my hoop house but had to quickly block the sun with a 4x4 sheet of plywood. Hope that helps and let me know if you have more questions.
Mike Kincaid thank you for the guidance.
