  • There are some surnames that instantly make you think of Scotland, whether it be MacDonald, Campbell, or Fraser.
However, just because certain names are associated with the country does not mean they are the most common here. Every surname tells a story and all of the names that you come across in Scotland have a unique history.
The National Records of Scotland provides the most up-to-date information about the surnames that occur most often in Scotland's registers of births, marriages and deaths for various years back to 1975.
The data may not represent the surnames of the population of Scotland as a whole as it includes the surnames of non-residents who were born, married, or died in the country. Likewise, the data excludes the surnames of residents who were born, married, or died elsewhere.

Much of this is nonsense, and shows poor research or journalism, Robertson was anglicised from MacDonnachaidh, Smith was a rename of names that were to complicated for the English language. Many Macs were changed to Sons. There is a period of anglicisation from 1707 to present. This is what the union is all about. The EU wouldn't try and commit cultural and linguistic genocide, but its a real partnership.

Actually Smith is technically a Germanic name, not just English - from proto Germanic smiðjon (one who works metal). Schmidt in German, and is the 2nd most popular surname in Germany. In Scottish Gaelic Mac Gobhann (Anglicised as McGowan) is the same name (son of the blacksmith). You can even find it in the Spanish surname Herrero (blackmith), and in France Lefèbvre (the blacksmith). It would seem that being a blacksmith was a pretty common occupation in much of Europe, unsurprisingly. Also, the surname Brown appears all over Europe with various spellings - Bruno (Italy - from a Germanic borrowing into Latin), Brun (France - from a Germanic borrowing into Latin), Braun (Germany), and it even appears in Scottish and Irish Gaelic as Donn which is a direct translation of Brown - this surname goes all the way back to the ancient kingdom of Dál Riata, possibly even more ancient. If you've read up on your Scottish history, you'll have come across Domnall Donn, King of Dál Riata, died 696CE. The name was often used as a byname for people with a dark complexion long before it became an actual surname in middle ages.
