When it comes to pauses, I do that often. My mouth doesn't always catch up to my brain. Unfortunately, that always ended up being an opportunity for the person I'm speaking with to interject before I could finish a thought. That tells me that they're not really listening, they're just waiting for their turn to speak. But communication has to work both ways. That's why the Socratic method is a better approach. You're not pushing anything or trying to win a debate, you're just encouraging contemplation. Plus, the other person feels heard instead of lectured.

Generally, if you want someone to feel like you are having a good conversation, let them talk and just lead them to the next topic. Then they feel like you interested in them. So this is a good insight.

Another good tip…..speaking slower, helps you to speak lower. As opposed to faster which makes you speak higher pitched and nasally.

Hi! I just recently found out I’m on the spectrum and I’ve always had trouble with socializing and just normal social cues. These videos that you create help me tremendously! Thank you so much.

Also, if you're trying to communicate an idea or different perspective to someone, use a Socratic method rather than trying to change someone's mind. Let them speak more than you, and just ask questions. If the idea is worth contemplating, and there's truth in it, they'll change their mind on their own. It's like having a broken bone, and you go to a doctor. The doctor doesn't heal the break, he simply puts the pieces in place so they heal themselves. Be confident and competent, don't be defensive or argumentative, be specific in your questions, and let the person do the rest. No one wants to listen to someone who is being preachy. :)

Because I am likely less prepared than usual. Lots of improvising. Lots of rambling too lol.

People listen to me because I don't really talk a whole lot. People hold your words to more value when you speak only when you actually have something to say.

Helpful advice honestly given, thank you. Darren, after out last exchange I had a concern regarding your use of the word 'detail', of course then I saw your next video in which you explained that someone had been stealing your material, then I understood, particularly with the unfortunate manner with which I introduced myself, perhaps I sent your alarm bells ringing. So I feel uncomfortable, I don't know what I can say to assure you that I am admirer and ally, rather than thug or villain. All I can say is I have never visited your website, and I have added that one wonderful video of many voices and Laben to my Voice 101 playlist. My public speaking skills such as they are were acquired back in the 1960s and 70s as part of religious group, with I which I have had no part in for over thirty years. As for the voice acting and voiceover skills you've demonstrated, I admit I'm fascinated... however I'm an old guy, I don't see myself making a career of that, perhaps to add voices to some animations I have in mind for my own future content but, that is 'pie in the sky' right now. However, had I a hoot with what you've worked so hard, to put on this channel. So let me give you something back, call it a parting gift, as best as one can on RUclips. Back in the seventies I came across a book that at the time was rather hard to follow, it was the 3rd edition of 'Straight & Crooked Thinking' by R H Thouless, more recently the fifth edition was release in 2011 by the grandson C R Thouless with the promise to carry on his grandfathers work. The fifth edition is considerably easier to follow, and is one for what I call my 'mind's eye' books and to be committed to memory - which I have yet to do. It is a 'mind's eye' book because it helps to cut through the vail of lies and dishonest-argument delivered by power-wielders: statements of 'all' where 'some' is true etc., it plots the false arguments and their counters, mastery of the the skills within this book will certainly give your speaking - teeth and authority. Well, I feel terrible leaving having only just found you but, as the wise sage once said 'for we are all transient... and merely waves... on the same ocean.' I've been a practitioner of Zhan Zhung since the 1990s, so let me leave you with one of my own mantras: 'Warmth of the Sun... Serene like Moon and Stars...' 'Good Luck Darren'!
