When I was still a newcomer to pool, I could only judge Earl like the cover of a book. I was (obviously) a huge fan of Efren, and I saw Earl as the polar opposite of a calm & collected player like Efren was. After intergrading myself into this culture more, I’ve come to realize that there is much more to Earl than his attitude in some matches. This man really is a priceless pearl and as true of a pool warrior as any other top player. Thank you for your amazing storytelling of this incident 🙏
I had the privilege of being in the front row for this match and at the after party. Should have heard what Earl had to say (shout) when he marched into the after party!
Very minor correction - you mention a few times that the match was in England. It was actually in the city of Cardiff, which is in Wales. It;s still part of Great Britain and the United Kingdom, and only an hour or so from the border with England, but saying Cardiff is in England is a bit like saying Toronto is in the USA. It's also worth saying that both Matchroom and Sky TV had spent several years useing famous snooker players (and Davis in particular) as a way of getting the UK audience to watch pool. Early European Mosconi Cup teams relied heavily on famous snooker players for this reason. As a result, I can understand why the established pool players would come to resent snooker players being given so much hype.
Hey John, thanks for the correction! You're exactly right, it was Cardiff not England. I have a Welsh friend named Chris who would kill me if he found out, so please don't tell him. Ugh, I am kicking myself now for not fact checking that part better.
@@RollieWilliams No worries, your secret is safe with me! I should have added how much I enjoyed the video, and the channel in general. Looking forward to seeing more :)
The only reason anyone resents snooker players is because they fill up pool clips on RUclips talking about how terrible and easy the game is and that's its trash and how they are superior in every way.
Memories, was lucky enough to be at this game. Both legends in their own right. Earl is box office 😂. On a side note, it was played in Cardiff, Wales 🏴
Steve Davis is well known as a cordial and gentlemanly figure in the world of snooker. As for time-outs or breaks during a match, it's not unusual for a snooker player to leave the arena for a few minutes here and there, whether for a bathroom break or perhaps just for some quiet composure time. Steve Davis did absolutely nothing wrong with his time-outs during this match in 2003 against Earl Strickland.
I asked Chatgpt the timeout question and immediately got this response, "In the 2003 World 9-Ball Championship, each player was allowed one timeout per rack or game. This means that in a match, the number of timeouts allowed would depend on the number of games or racks played." This could be reliable since Chagpt is "trained on diverse sources such as books, articles, websites, and other textual material available on the internet."
Love this video. Love earl. Hes a great player. In my opinion if he was more stoic and creative... he would beat Efren Rayes. And be the goat. Too bad we all have flaws. Efrens flaw is his break.
I think Earl’s completely right. I mean he could’ve handled his emotions a bit better I guess, but everything he said was right. When Josh Filler missed the four ball and left the nine hanging over the side pocket for Skylar Woodward to win the U.S. the Mosconi cup, not one pool event in America replayed that over and over again right before Woodward played Filler in any event. The U.S. doesn’t treat European players like this, and this is an instance where those event holders had full control of that video, and did not have to include it at all.
It’s just the UK in general, most of us over the pond are overexcited children, as much as I love Steve Davis n all the crowds in the UK I think are the most insulting and degrading in the world, but also the most supportive of our own too, stoic I guess you could say, not always fair but eh
Its not about US or Europe. There is guys in both places who would gass the hype and do stuff like that its pretty much who is behind those monitors who is proadcastin and what they tryna accomplish in this case they just did all to hype this event
Honestly you and Earl should have you’re own show! Earl was just such a talent at a young as the old guys wouldn’t give him credit. Watch his straight pool match Danny d commentates on. He just shits on him the whole time and that he doesn’t have a chance and then won. Greatest shoot maker through 3 maybe 4 decades.
I had the privilege of being in the front row for this match and at the after party. Should have heard what Earl had to say (shout) when he marched into the after party!
I remember watching pool on espn 2 back in 2004(ish) most likely a tourney re-run but earl TEED off on some woman in the crowd. I cannot for the life of me find video of that. Does anybody know what match that was????
If anyone watched snooker, the match from snoooker world championship of 1985, steve davis vs dennis taylor on the final frame. Steve Davis actually lost the match similar to the shot Earl missed. that is quite funny to see.
Its Europe v America not England! Have to disagree with Earl about the atmosphere in America, maybe different with pool but he's obviously never watched a Ryder Cup match there. The crowds are horrible to the Europeans! Don't get me wrong, loved watching Earl play. He was a real character who wore his heart on his sleeve but boy could he play pool!
British crowds will always give you shit, and if it affects you negatively they will get worse. However, if you take it well, they'll respect you and you'll be accepted as one of their own. Unfortunately, this guy falls into the "up tight American" stereotype, and they mercilessly shat all over him.
So, Steve Davis fans are shouting at Earl _when Steve is playing_ , but Michaela Tabb doesn't quiet the crowd. Then, Earl says some choice words to the crowd, and Michaela specifically tells Earl to not talk when Steve is playing... huh _Seems like even one of the best referees started out as a bad one._
kinda funny, but somehow i like Earl, sure he's one of the best player and his comment while doing a match a bit commical, very few player still exsisting after those long year of existence in this sport.
Earl suffers from some kind of PTSD. Brits (who are already an abused people by their imperial overlords) can be arseholes and thoroughly enjoy kicking people when they’re down. I hope Earl has learnt to manage this terrible affliction.
I believe that Strickland is a good person. He's just extremely passionate about this beautiful game. I guess I would be too if the stakes were as high.
The good guy lost. IMHO Earl is an a-hole, always has been. I’ve seen him play many times, though not anymore, and if he wasn’t throwing a fit he was complaining. At the BCA convention in Kansas City back in the early 90’s he smelled so bad we had to move on to another vendor’s display.
If pool is ever going to be taken seriously as a sport then the crowd needs to be more like the crowds in China when watching the game. You have a bunch of drunken imperials acting like drunk peasants at a tavern in 16th century England. I can't stand how the crowd acts at the mosconi cup.
It is interesting that British fans don't behave this way during snooker matches. In fact the referee tells them to shut up when they make noise other than respectful clapping. Why are the 21st century Mosconi audiences so juvenile? I don't even bother with watching Mosconi matches anymore. I think Earl has a tendency to throw blame externally when things go wrong, but in this example, he was not wrong. I guess I will never understand the concept of fans thinking that making noise to distract the player they don't like is somehow an interesting thing to do. If I am wanting a particular player to win, I still want both players to play well. I'm not interested in trying to get a player to miss due to crowd noise and/or insults. Looks like I am living in the wrong world.
The Yanks atarted the needle with the 'mashed potato' shouts during the backswaing at the Ryder at Hazeltine '16. Some of the worst fans I've ever seen. The Mosconi of the same year started the extension shouting, it's just got worse from there...
@@richardclarke9966 Apologies for characterizing the problem as the 'British' fans. What I meant more precisely is the audience in the UK pool events when the events are international (likely the audience is international as well). Obviously I have no way of accurately identifying the individual backgrounds of audience members. In this particular case it appeared to be audience inappropriately berating Earl Strickland (needless to say, Earl has been the annoying one in other matches in the U.S. and I'd be the first to criticize him for that as well). As for the audiences in the UK pool events (regardless of audience ethnicity/nationality), it would be good if someone finished it regardless of who started it! Use the model of behavior in the UK snooker events rather than the model of UK football events!
Yeah it’s really interesting to compare the behavior of pool and snooker fans, especially considering this event was played in England. As a Steve Davis supporter in this video, I definitely think that the crowd should be a lot more respectful and, as you said, root for their player but also a great game
That's an easy one to answer. Matchroom's pool events (and particularly the Mosconi Cup) are deliberately organised to distinguish themselves from televised snooker. Before matches, the MC will encourage crowds to be louder and wilder, unlike snooker, where the MC will remind the crowd they must be quiet and respectful. Likewise, if you ever go to a combined snooker/pool hall in the UK, you will almost always see the snooker area is dark, and near-silent, while the pool area will be light and noisy, with music playing.
I didnt know i need Rollie narrating old matches, but now i need more

💯
Earl brought Michaela ,the ref, a bunch of flowers when he came out for his next match to apologise. He is a character 😂
Fxxk the flowers...
He is sad
Lol your storytelling is superb. I was tearing up with emotion when Earl missed that 5-ball…
"I've seen people show less emotion after getting stabbed"
.... am I the only one now wondering how many people Rollie has stabbed?
One time in Boy Scouts I threw a pocket knife and it ended up in my own leg. So at least one.
Such a character, and so sad he couldn't be part of this year's Mosconi
Definitely a good character for the game.
Maybe he could have had a heart attack, so maybe its good he missed it
