Sorry to say, but Swapan Dasgupta himself seems to have digested the lie that Sanskrit was/is not a conversational language. People who make such claims or agree to them also happen to not have studied Sanskrit and its literature to any considerable extent. Tell me one so-called classical language that was also not a conversational language. You will be laughed at you if you claim that Classical Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Hebrew were not conversational languages. But this can only be successfully attempted with Sanskrit because Indians will digest just about any nonsense.

Prakrit languages formed through non-standard varieties of Sanskrit. The formation of Prakrits itself proves that Sanskrit was already a spoken language, since only a spoken language can under such modifications in sounds and structure over time. While the common speech drifted, the educated language for fixed. This gave rise to the period of time where the common folk spoke Prakrit while the educated spoke Sanskrit. But this was specific to a period in time, and not always the case. There is nothing inherent in Sanskrit that prevents it from being a conversational language.
