I've used pads for most of my life as well and I used to feel a little embarassed about it because to me it seemed like at a certain age you're supposed to wear tampons. However I also don't love the plastic feeling of pads, especially in the summer, and have switched to period underwear about two years ago. It's super comfortable and reusable (yay sustainability!), even though it's a little pricey and the one I have isn't vegan unfortunately. I've also had a menstrual cup for many years and have never gotten the hang of it until recently when I purchased a different cup (literally the smallest one I could find and very flexible). I already like it so much more and use it with the underwear on the heavier days.

I’m so glad that you’re comfortable to talk about your experience. I have few advices for you, since I’m on the final year of medicine . First is: don’t pressure yourself for using menstrual cups or tampons if you’re not comfortable with the idea. Since you are not sexually active, it could be painful to put it inside because of sitff vaginal muscles and tightness, so I would stick to the pads if I were you. Second: make sure that you use natural pads, without colors or parfume that could trigger endocrine disruption and cause more painful periods. Third: make sure to keep records of your period, you can use apps like period calender where you can see if everything was ok retrospectively.
I tried a tampon first when I was 14 and my mum didn't tell me how to put in properly I only learnt at 15 and since then they have become a lot more comfortable
If you are not confident with the menstrual cup (me neither, I wish I was but...), there are reusable pads which you can wash, so they are another sustainable alternative! I've been using them for over 2 years and I've never had any accident :)
@@moonchild6173 I use ecolily reusable pads and they're amazing! Super soft and way more comfortable than disposable pads, and way better for the environment! I also use the reusable tampon applicator from DAME which is amazing. DAME do reusable pads and period underwear as well. Hope this helps :)

A few things to consider with period cups (I had to make the transition as I went abroad longterm, with only crazy expensive and chemical filled period products available where I went). 1. There are not only different sizes but also different flexibilities in the silicone cups. Some people need the more flexible ones (they are way more easy to get in and out) but the more harder ones will prevent leakage better. 2. Start slowly on a day with heavy flow. Or use a safe lubricant for down there. The first few times it will not be pleasant. But as you get a grip on how to get it in and out it will feel like a breeze. Just do one day if you had troubles inserting it multiple times to prevent yourself getting sores. 3. Some women have issues getting it out. I never came across that issue. Mine is always easy to reach. But be warned. Go to your OB/GYN if you have the feeling you cannot get it out. I was told they will get it out in matters of seconds and that it will not hurt! But if you know you cannot "recover" them on your own, stop using them. 4. Try multiple folding techniques. Some do not work at all for me. I have found my favorite way of folding it and it is really easy now. Do not give up if it does not get in the first time. 5. If you still can feel the cup when moving it is not in deep enough. I made that mistake the first time. It hurt like crazy. It is not supposed to hurt. If I still can feel it I push it in in a rotating motion, it will not get in deeper by just pushing it. 6. If you leak make sure the cup had the chance to unfold itself inside of you. If you have the feeling you need to change the cup within the first hours it either did not unfold itself (I make sure to hear air getting into it) or your cup is too soft (then try a harder one, usually you will have to switch to another brand). If I would not have had to get used to them, I would probably given up the second day. Be gentle on yourself and try it throughout multiple cycles. I now could not imagine going back to pads or tampons. They are so much more gentle to your skin and they do not dry you out. And yes the environmental aspect is a huge one. I just boil mine with a bit of sodium bicarbonate (the one you use for baking) in water for 10 minutes after each cycle and use fresh tap water when I pour them out. Best thing that ever happened to me! Hope that helps someone!

Then my friend reminded me that trying it was like trying anything else - if you don't 'succeed' the first time then that's okay, there's plenty of time and opportunities to try again. Hello Holly, I think you are so brave overcoming your fear of talking about this topic and about overcoming your insecurity. I also would love a video about the menstrual cup. I always wanted to try one but never was brave enough to do it. Love your progress
Holly spoke about the importance of nutrition and cutting back on exercise, one issue she didn't mention in detail, but which is also important, is around stress. Stress has a huge impact physically, and it's just as important to take care of yourself mentally as physically. So, being away at university, or facing everyday stresses such as money worries, bereavement, problems at home, can all have a big impact. Look after yourself.
I’m crying watching this Holly. Periods are so important in terms of health for women, but there is surprisingly very little information out there, as it just isn’t spoken about. For anyone reading this, please consult your doctor ASAP if you are worried about anything to do with this, especially lack of periods. It can be a range of medical conditions and ultimately your body is trying to alert you that something isn’t right. Sometimes it is just as simple as a lack of vitamins (folic acid etc).
I find it so satisfying that you took your time with this topic and addressed it only when you wanted to and were ready to share and that you weren't bullied in to it! (Those period comments seemed almost harassing and definitely mean at some point.) Anyway, thank you for the video and all the best for you Holly!
I'm so glad you are feeling more comfortable with your period. So exciting that you have a menstrual cup, but don't feel pressured to use one if you don't want to, or don't feel comfortable. Also, have you thought about trying reusable pads. They may be a good option if you want to be more eco friendly but don't feel as comfortable using a cup :)
I was so inspired by all the university vlogs and all that you were able to manage being at Cambridge. I've been overweight most of my adult life, and struggle with food and body image. I tried many times but I was not able to follow your lifestyle. I felt disappointed afterwards and thought that maybe I'm not good/healthy enough. Knowing your struggles made me realise that it's not healthy to compare my body to yours or anyone for that matter. If my body is functioning properly, that's a sign of a healthy body and I should accept it and also be thankful. It's so good to see these videos, because I have not really been in an environment where girls could freely talk about this stuff, so it's liberating and feels like a breath of fresh air. Love, Yashi
You might try out period underwear if a menstrual cup is not your cup of tea. They are also more sustainable than pads or tampons, because you wash and reuse them. I have been using them for years and honestly it has changed the relationship I have with my period so so much, I sometimes even forget I'm bleeding, because they are so comfortable and work so well for me.
@@rebbj9533 Sure, I have tried Thinx and Ooia. Thinx is based in the US and Ooia in Germany. There are many brands available all around the world, just research some that don't cost a fortune to get shipped to your country.
Modibodi do incredible period pants! I've been using them for about a year now. So super comfortable and I've never leaked in them! Recommend them 100%. Primark have also just started selling period pants, I've not tried them so can't comment on how good they are, but they might be great for those with a smaller budget! ❤️❤️
I'm quite overweight (which is something I'm working on!), but I also lose my period for a couple months every once in a while. Periods are a very complex phenomena, loved hearing your story Holly!
I really can relate to you not being brave enough to use a menstrual cup before! I'm so happy you took the first step! I too want to try using it but like you I'm terrified and don't have enough courage yet to try it out. I hope one day I get the courage to do so!
on my period right now! so proud of you Holly, for sharing this with us! and i'm high-key scared of using a menstrual cup too omg, even tampons kind of scare me haha!
You’re right periods which afflict a lot of the population are not spoken about enough and are still considered taboo to many people. Ps. I’ve been using a menstrual cup for about 5 years now it definitely does take a little to get the use of placement. Please give yourself the space and kindness to experiment with it. Also, the first time you remove it…do it in the shower and be sure to collapse it inside to eliminate risk of painful removal (which usually happens cause if the suction) I wish someone told me that. It would have saved me from some trouble and mess.
17:17 also reminder that if these cramps or pain interfere with your movement, getting out of bed, going to work or school, etc, and basically hinder your 'normality' of life, there may be another issues like endometriosis (1 in 9ish women have it) or pcos or something else. While low-key cramps are normal, if they cause bad pain and prevent you from really 'living', go to the doctors! Pain is very normalised for women and its not normal.
I just want to say: Holly, you are a gorgeous and resilient person, and we are all proud of you:) And Natacha's videos help a lot to come into terms with many things, too.
I had ammenorreha for 10 years, and my bones are absolutely irreversibly fucked. I am so glad and proud of you for speaking up about this and that you are working on your mental health . I actually had to stop watching you for a couple of years because I was in a bad space and getting triggered and worried about you. You definitely have an energy about you now that you didn't have before and i hope this next chapter of your life is full of exciting things that you deserve
Holly, I am so glad that you are comfortable with talking about your experiences with your periods. Whenever I get close to my periods, my belly tends to get bloated and I feel cranky and touchy. My breasts get sore close to my periods and I had a few headaches. I never used tampons because I did not feel comfortable with them. I tried putting them on and I just hurt myself. That is why that I have always used plain sanitary pads without any perfume.
Thank you for sharing. I have a similar story and I think it is so important for girls to know that it is not okay to not have a period and that being healthy is much more important than looks etc. Lots of love 💕🙏🏼
also holly please try reusable pads or period pants! i don’t like menstrual cups much and find them a bit intimidating. the external stuff is so much more comfy and just as sustainable!!!
More power to you Holly! You're doing great, keep going. I know using menstrual cups can be intimidating but having used it personally for over a year now, I can guarantee that it's only hard for the first time(like anything else). You just have to get used to the idea and that it's completely safe and normal. If you do manage to switch, it'll change your life for the better! Do share your experience.
Sophie Louise recently did a really open and honest video about trying period products and reviewing them- would definitely recommend! She had also never tried anything other than pads and it was very educational for people who want to find out more.
Thank you so so much for being so open and honest and vulnerable. You are breaking the stimga and shame around menstrual health which I think should be spoken about without shame because it is so essential in understanding health and what’s going on in our bodies. I also love seeing you blossom and become more confident it’s such a lovely journey to see and be a part of. I highly recommend checking out the channel Hannah Witton and More Hannah she talks a lot about “taboo” topics regarding female health and sexual things that we have been taught to feel shameful towards when in reality it’s natural and should be spoken about openly. Loved and really valued this video. Thank you!
Holly, I would advise that for the first time using a menstrual cup, try it at the later end of your cycle, or when it’s lower flow - I think it just puts a little less pressure on ‘getting it right’ first time and almost allows you to practice. I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve used one and not worked, which can be quite discouraging, but I think the less pressure you put on yourself and the cup initially, the better 😊 I’ve been using one for 5+ years and I can’t imagine going back. Good luck!
I am sosososo happy to hear that you feel whole now:) it made me emotional hearing your story, I lost my period for two years as well and it was extremely inspiring hearing how you experienced it. Thank you for sharing x
Holly, I am soooo proud of you! I hope I also get my period back (hopefully very soon). You're such an inspiration for me. Thank you for speaking so real in this video ♡
Oh my god I feel the same about a menstrual cup!! I’ve been through the same feelings regarding tampons and then stuck to pads and gave up. I never spoke about it, even to myself because I was ashamed of not being able to do enough for the environment. Thank you for sharing your story and making us feel better about this. 🤗 Hopefully my cup days are coming soon!
Tip for trying menstrual cup first time: practice putting it in when you’re not on your period so you have some idea of what to do when your period does come and it’s not so messy ☺️ Also look up folding techniques I’ve personally found the punch down fold is the easiest
The menstrual cup can be quite difficult to use and can take long to get used to and know how to manipulate it properly. I am still learning after nearly a year. So don't get discouraged easily, give it a long time to get used to it.
I've always been super excited about clith pads, since they're so colourful and soft. I've never had a full or not ridiculously heavy, healthy period. So I'm excited to see a video on how you got your period back! I also really recommend cloth pads and cloth pantyliners! Precious stars pads sells pretty affordable ones
I just wanted to say that your work ethic is inspiring to me! I’m someone who’s doing a science degree(&research) and I want to start creating content and start a small shop. There’s just so many different things I want to do in the next few years even tho I’m not done with my education yet. It seems so crazy and it is but I think of how you’ve been able to do youtube & your other projects while also doing so well in your degrees and I think - maybe I can do this! Thank you so much for creating and showing me what’s possible 😊
Happy for you!! I also still struggle with accepting my period. For a long time, I wanted to lose weight mainly to lose my period, hope I can get to a point in my life where I can accept it!
I think Hannah Witton has done a youtube video on trying menstral cups if that would help. Plus it took me ages to come to use tampons, but I found that trying them for the first time is easiest on your heaviest day as there's a lot more 'lubricant' (sorry if that's too much TMI). So maybe give it a go when your period is particularly heavy (and make sure there's plenty of paper tissues and soap on hand for the clean up)
Holly I don't know if you know this but you are an amazing speaker 😊 you should totally open a podcast, you talk in such a way that people get and that's a talent😊😊😊
Concerning the products, it was/is the same for me. I didn't use tampons until I had my first sexual experience, which was only in my twenties, because I just could not bring myself to try tampons. I would get really emotional when even thinking about it, and I was also really ashamed and didn't talk to friends about it. I used tampons for a while after that, but they are just not my thing, and I much prefer pads. I also feel bad about the environmental issues, but I am just not comfortable with using anything else, so I try to reduce my footprint elsewhere as much as I can. I am so so glad that right now I am comfortable enough to tell people (if they ask obviously haha) that I don't like tampons, but for a very long time I felt ashamed about that. It just made me realise how much there still is to teach people of all genders and ages about periods, there is still a huge stigma around it.
Omg I can feel you...I have the same problem with tampons I have not used it yet but can't bring myself to use it..I'm more comfortable with sanitary pads...my girls left me because iam not there type I'm virgin nd it's another reason why they started hating me even more nd now I'm all alone but I feel good tht I dont have toxic frnds anymore sometime it sucks but it's good being alone rather having stupid frnds I mean snakes...I'm grateful I don't have them in my life anymore... anyways thank youuuuuuu so so much for opening up... sending u love 💕💕💕💕💕
Omg im so happy someone here relates! I have never been able to use anything but pads and EVERYONE in my life picks on me for it to the point where I don’t even mention my periods to friends or family 😬
I struggled with my period my whole life I had a cyst in my ovaries at 15 yo lol it was a roller-coaster haha for anyone struggling you are not alone it will get better! ❤️❤️
Hey Holly, I thinks it's great that you are giving the menstrual cup a chance. I've been using cups for several years now, and I would never go back to pads or tampons. Such a live changer! Here is what I found helpful at the beginning: Do your first try on your second or third day of your period. The blood will make the whole thing go smoother :-D I did have some leakings the first times I used a cup so I tried different folding methods and cup models and brands. I can warmly recommend Bree's YT channel "Precious star vlogs". Bree talks periods and "rumps" (ReUsable Menstrual Products). She has some great videos on cups and how to use them and she has an awesome and easy way of talking about these topics. Good luck with this new experience! Greetings from Germany :-)
So good that you can talk about this stuff! For the menstrual cup, when I first started using mine I found that it was recommended to use some water-based lube when inserting. Minimizes any pain etc. Also I'd recommend watching some videos from Precious Star Pads because they have some great tips. Also if the menstrual cup doesn't work out for you, there are also reusable pads which you can get so you're being more sustainable in a way that works for your body (I have a friend who cannot use inserted products for medical reasons so this is what she does). I will however note I never had any trouble with tampons and such, I had swimming training the first day I got my period and I didn't want to miss it so I was stubborn and figured out tampons from day 1.
When I was a teen I struggled with an ED and amenorrea was one of the many consequences. I felt so ashamed and like I wasn't "a woman" because of it. I'm so glad young girls have someone like you nowadays who can talk openly about these issues and to help remove the stigma surrounding it. 💕
i feel the same way you do about menstrual cups, so i'd love to see a video on it if you ever do figure them out :) in the meantime, or maybe if you don't end up liking the cup after all, there's reusable pads as well. i've been using mine for almost two years now and they're great! you just rinse them off cold after using and then put them in the wash like you would every other item of clothing :) maybe give those a try!
Kind of besides the point but I am the same age as you and I think I actually went to see Billy Elliot in London with my family while on holidays whilst you were on the show. I was pretty young and didn’t understand all the lyrics (I’m German) but I still remember ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. ✨ Also, what an incredibly honest and brave video, wow!!
It is great that you got your period back. Since I started my period eleven years ago I used pads until this year that I finally had the courage to try a menstrual cup and I have been loving it. I hope you enjoy your experience with the cup too.
I used a menstrual cup and didn't really enjoy it. It was great for a while, but i didn't love it. I now use period underwear, and they are the best thing that have ever happened to my period. I don't have a heavy flow, so I can only speak for myself, but they are amazing.
Great video Holly loved this maybe do a kind of series/playlist of videos to help girls/women it might help.As you said it’s great to have a period it’s a healthy way to say as u put it your body is healthy.I’m naturally skinny never had problems with getting my period I’ve always had the worst heavy periods still do unfortunately but I’m glad I do get my period naturally every month.
Your story really moved me (I struggle with PCOs and other menstrual issues) and I just want to say that you are really one of the best people I've known (even though we never met)💕 On a lighter note, I am trying the menstrual cup too!! Let's gooo
Hi Holly, thank you for sharing your story! It’s so nice to hear that you’ve become happy with your own body and this is definitely a topic that should be more normalised :) on the topic of period products, I’ve recently started using period underwear and they are actually a life saver! I hadn’t had a period in a long time due to being on the pill and when it came back I found pads and tampons just weren’t working for me. I was skeptical at first but it’s so comfy and never leaks. Just mentioning it as another sustainable other than the cup :) love your videos!
If u haven't already, pls check out the book 'Wild Power'! It talks about those changes and how your energy shifts inwards + outwards over the course of your cycle. I've not even finished it but it has already helped me so much in understanding those changes and feelings :))
hey girl!! You aren't the only one who is scared of menstrual cups but there are other alternatives. There are reusable sanitary pads that are made of cloths. You could try them if you don't feel comfortable about the menstrual cup
Holly, I’ve watched you for years (since you started uni!) and I wanted to say how proud I felt watching this video. You’re glowing, you seem so much more confident in yourself and it’s so lovely to see. Thank you for talking about this and helping others, you should feel so proud of yourself 🥰♥️
Dear Holly, there are also washable period underpants that work like a pad. As an alternative to the cup... Although they cost a bit more, especially if you get a few, but it is also more sustainable than pads and the quality is usually very good, so they last a long time :)
Wow Holly I'm so happy that you have reached this point in your life where you can open up about your period and body image! These are such important topics! This video was super clear, straight to the point and interesting. Congrats ! ^^

Could you suggest the brands you wear? I have been on the hunt but I don't know which ones the right ones to buy for heavy period flow.
@@rebbj9533 Sure, I have tried Thinx and Ooia. Thinx is based in the US and Ooia in Germany. There are many brands available all around the world, just research some that don't cost a fortune to get shipped to your country.
@@HollyGabrielle I hope you find something you're comfortable with 🧡
Modibodi do incredible period pants!
Proud of you that you shared your story!!!💯💪🏻
I really can relate to you not being brave enough to use a menstrual cup before! I'm so happy you took the first step! I too want to try using it but like you I'm terrified and don't have enough courage yet to try it out. I hope one day I get the courage to do so!
It's very sweet of u to give a trigger warning even though it's not very triggering. But u sucha sweetie ❤
holly i’m so proud of you 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
on my period right now! so proud of you Holly, for sharing this with us! and i'm high-key scared of using a menstrual cup too omg, even tampons kind of scare me haha!
We’re proud of how far you’ve come, Holly 💕 here’s to sustained growth in the future as well
I use reusable pads and knickers (got mine from small businesses and primark)! x
It's so normal to be scared of THE CUP! And it's definitely a learning curve, but in the end it's actually the BEST product ever!!
100% agreed.
I just want to say: Holly, you are a gorgeous and resilient person, and we are all proud of you:) And Natacha's videos help a lot to come into terms with many things, too.
ah thank you! 🥺 and yes, natasha is so amazing! she has really helped me and as you said, many others 😌
Proud of you for making this🥰
I didn't skip even 1 second of this video .... This is your best video I swear .... Proud of you !! ❤️
To anyone suffering from not having period or irregular ones, it's OK to take pills (if it's necessary), also check for autoimmune diseases☘️
8:51 > i think this would help a lot of people, who are also maybe scared to use one !
you're so brave to share your experience about period, which is very helpful!! Also, the little Holly is so lovely~
Thank you for sharing. I have a similar story and I think it is so important for girls to know that it is not okay to not have a period and that being healthy is much more important than looks etc. Lots of love 💕🙏🏼
also holly please try reusable pads or period pants! i don’t like menstrual cups much and find them a bit intimidating. the external stuff is so much more comfy and just as sustainable!!!
let me tell you i went through all of ur previous vids , and girl , I am loving the way u r beautifully evolving, we love to see it Holly
Love the video Holly! The idea of a cup scares me too! I have been using reusable period underwear, and will never go back. It's a game changer 🙌
Thank you!
I missed watching your videos! Im so glad youre sharing your story. Period shouldn't be a taboo topic. I also glad you're so much better now :)
Just quickly want to say how helpful you are to me and my own body image. I love all your content.
Oh my god this video hits home soooooo much. It's crazy. Thank you Holly ❤💛
Aw Holly, I appreciate you making this so much
Holly, I am soooo proud of you! I hope I also get my period back (hopefully very soon). You're such an inspiration for me. Thank you for speaking so real in this video ♡
I love, love, love this video. Thank you for opening up ❤️
Oh my god I feel the same about a menstrual cup!!
Tip for trying menstrual cup first time: practice putting it in when you’re not on your period so you have some idea of what to do when your period does come and it’s not so messy ☺️
Also look up folding techniques I’ve personally found the punch down fold is the easiest
The menstrual cup can be quite difficult to use and can take long to get used to and know how to manipulate it properly. I am still learning after nearly a year. So don't get discouraged easily, give it a long time to get used to it.
So proud of you, Holly. This video will surely help other girls going through this kind of problem.
If you're scared of the menstrual cup but want to be more sustainable, try period panties or reusable pads ! They are great
This video shows so much growth!! So proud of you Holly xx
Was thinking the same thing. She speaks with clarity which is something I struggled with
@@HollyGabrielle will wait for it and thank you for the heart😊
Thank you so much for sharing your story❤️ this video was great to watch, as always…also compared to some older videos your skin is super glowy now✨✨
Concerning the products, it was/is the same for me.
Thank you so much for sharing, Holly..glad to see you're feeling even more comfortable with yourself ❤
There are also washable period underwear you can use, if the cup is not comfortable for you!
Thank you for opening it is a hard subject but you will pull through i am here to support you 100%
I feel like i'm liking you even more as time passes. Love watching your journey, your changes and your thoughts Holly
Dude!!! Try the menstrual cup and you'd never go back to pads/tampons...Its such a relief to go through periods with a cup
Hey I actually tried it but I didn't got good results
for me it changed EVERYTHING for the better and I'm SO happy to have started using it!
SO brave, I am proud of you Holly ❤️
I have always used pads too and I'm not comfortable either with tampons or menstrual cups so I never use them. You're not alone!!!! 💗
Thanks Holly for speaking about this. And congratulations!!
Hannah Witton did a video on how to use a menstrual cup a couple of years back. I found it to be very helpful!
i feel the same way you do about menstrual cups, so i'd love to see a video on it if you ever do figure them out :)
in the meantime, or maybe if you don't end up liking the cup after all, there's reusable pads as well. i've been using mine for almost two years now and they're great! you just rinse them off cold after using and then put them in the wash like you would every other item of clothing :) maybe give those a try!
Thanks for making these videos! Very helpful for understanding someone I care about so much! So thank you 🙏
It is great that you got your period back.
THANK YOU for opening up about such a personal topic
Thanks for sharing your story Holly 😊
Holly, thank you for sharing! It was super helpful. Hopefully I can accept the fact that it's ok to have periods and get them back one day ❤❤❤
It's so admirable how comfortable you are to discuss and share these things!!! Us females can relate to the struggles for sure too haha
Love this video. I personaly don't like menstrual cups, but there is a lot of susteinable pads that you can wash after you use. I love them !
Thank you for sharing❤️
You are such a wonderful person. We are sooo proud of you.
Wow Holly I'm so happy that you have reached this point in your life where you can open up about your period and body image! These are such important topics! This video was super clear, straight to the point and interesting. Congrats ! ^^
Holly g your growth is beautiful and refreshing. I have too struggled with months of no cycle through my life. I would love to try a cup one day to but it terrifies me lol.
i am so so proud. wow, thank you for sharing.
