Thank you for your advice yesterday regarding my bathtub cartridge. I was quoted up to $400.00 to come out on a Saturday afternoon. After your video and talking to you it took us 1 hour to fix after getting all our supplies together. Thank you for your kindness!!!!!!!!!!!!
We did this repair but ours was a bit more involved. We were unable to remove the screw that holds the handle on because the screw was striped. So we had to DRILL the screw out and the handle came off. Our cartridge didn't have the HOT COLD written on the cartridge so that made it a bit harder and we had to use the hole formation to try to map out how to re-install the new one. This video gave us the basics and confidence to be able to complete this task. Thanks Greg Chick!
Thanks for this video. I was getting the run around from the plumber for 2 weeks, went to ACE store got the puller tool and viola i was done in 20mins. Now, can't wait to tackle the next leaky faucet! The internet makes us truly a global village. You could be my kind next door neighbor.
Thank you! Very helpful! FYI if anyone else has the problem I did: I turned the knob this morning and it broke off with the stem inside the handle and started spraying everywhere! Turned off the water and the stem had broken off about 1/4" inside the cartridge so I could not use a puller because there was nothing to attach it to. So I used a 5/32 inch masonry drill bit and drilled a hole deep into the broken stem within the cartridge. Then I screwed a gold screw in the hole, sprayed the cartridge with WD40 and used pliers to pull on the screw. It took some serious pulling but the cartridge slowly came out!
great video - You are the MAN !!! went to Home Depot, $39 for the moen replacement part and $12.97 for the puller. Took 10 min to repair and good as new. Thank you for your help !
Great video, easy to follow. Helped me change my Moen cartridge. Like others below I went to the hardware store to buy a cartridge and got a free one. Thanks Moen! One possible addition, put the plug in your bathtub or cover with a rag so you don't lose any screws.
saved hundreds by following this video. Did not even have to buy a cartridge as my local Home Depot exchanged the faulty one for a new one under Moen's warranty. Thank you for the detailed instructions.
Did you have to produce a receipt from Home Depot, in order for them to comp the warranty replacement? or would they do it even if you didn't buy from them originally?
You saved me money too. After 2 trips to the hardware store I was able to fix my shower. Plumber charged me 236.00 for the same issue in another bathroom. Great demonstration!!! Thank you!
I'm just ditching the limiter for now. Old handle broke and I had to use pliers to turn it off. Something wasn't lined up right for the replacement (with limiter) but it works fine with just the knob. It's not perfect but I haven't had a shower in 4 days so I'm thrilled.
Thank you so much for your step by step how to replace Moen shower valve. Done mine - after watching your hands on video. Saved my money and hassle during COVID19!
Greg, thank you so much for posting your videos. I am a first-time home-owner without much experience when it comes to home repairs. One of my upstairs bathrooms had no hot water. ARS quoted me $225 + tax to have the "cartridge" replaced. While doing research online I stumbled on this video which encouraged me to do it myself. Bought a new cartridge and puller (about $55 total) and with your video playing on my ipad right next to me I managed to replace it in less than 20 minutes. Thank you!!!!!
thanks for the awesome video.. other than using a little more elbow grease than i expected to pull out the cartridge, the project went wonderfully!! your close-ups at various stages of the project were really helpful- props to your videographer!!
Thank you! I had moen send me replacement parts for no charge but I have been intimidated to instll them. They have sat in my cupboard for a year. Now I will tackle this project and set the positemp at the same time so my kidlets cannot burn themselves!!! Your videos are terrific to follow!
Thanks for the great how-to video. Went to Home Depot and picked up the puller for $30 and they gave me the cartridge for no charge. I was going to call Moen directly as others have done because they will ship you a new replacement part for free but I was in a hurry to fix mine. I was surprised when the Home Depot employee wrote N/C on my cartridge and handed it to me.
Thank you for replying to my question. After looking at it a while I noticed a dark stain coming down the back where the pipe is for the tub spout. Turns out the water is just getting behind the spout and coming out the back side of the tub and down the wall. There was no silicone behind it so hopefully adding some fixed my problem. Thank you for taking the time to make a really informative video. I'm sure it will come in handy for me at some point in the future.
This video just saved me a lot of $$$ from calling a plumber, I grabbed the cartridge and puller tool from home depot and was able to replace it in 15 mins following the instructions, thank you very much. Liked and subscribed.
It was a good video, but mis leading as far as prices. The puller is $15, not $100. I didn't even need it to pull it out. The replacement part was $50, not $100 like the video said. The average Joe could do this job themselves for $50, not $200+. But still very helpful as far as the steps to take, no doubt there.
Very informative video that gives me some DIY courage perhaps. My problem is a seldom used guest bathroom where the Moen shower goes from cold then turns off as you turn to red for hot. Temperature never warms at all. Sink faucets are OK. Cartridge was replaced about 4 years ago when water flow would only trickle. Plumber said lack of use led to deposit build up (we are empty nesters). Many thanks for any help.
This video was excellent! I watched it 2 or 3 times till I felt comfortable with what you were doing and the pieces involved, then I followed your instructions. $50 and one hour later my daughter's shower is fixed! The old cartridge rubber had broken off on one side and was obviously the source of the problem. Thank you for your clear directions :)
Thank you for your very detailed and easy to follow video. I’m sooo glad that I picked up the cartridge puller tool, as my cheap tendencies were to just try to yank it out with the channel locks. The core puller was a key part of this removal process, as there was no way this old cartridge was coming out using the brut strength method. On installing the new cartridge, I had to “gently” tap the plastic collar in with a screwdriver before it sat all the way back in the pipe, then the pin just popped in like a glove. Thanks again.
Brian, that's my middle name and you even spell it correctly! thanks for the success and let me know if you ever need to succeed again...well, with names or plumbing anyway...
Thanks for the video saved me some cash. I had a tough time with the screw for the knob but hit it with PB blast. Had to borrow a puller for the cartridge cause it wasn't budging with the plastic remover they gave. Even still it took a while to work it out. Then the retainer clip needed a little manipulation to get it back in flush. All in all it went well.
This video was great saved me over $100 dollars in a service call. Now that I know how to do it only four more in the house to go. Thank you!!!! BTW Part was cheaper at Home Depot than Amazon.
Thank you... The "key" piece you show which is NOT shown or even mentioned on instructions with the cartridge is to pull off the chrome sleeve to pull out & put back the copper "pin". That's what was missing from my fixing my valve issue leaking so now my cartridge stays in correctly. Thankyou
Followed this - worked like a charm. Only setback was that I purchased the Moen sink clip rather than the shower. Luckily I was able to get the one out of the other shower (which is also broken and in no immediate need of repair).
I am glad to have helped someone with a name such as yours, I too am a value seeker. That is why I like to offer value, I'm cheap at twich the price! congradulations for succeeding that makes us both winners..
Thank you soo much for this video.I would like to point out some differences. The cartridges in my home where very old going back to the mid nineties. I was unable to remove the hex screw in my handle as it seized after many years and I stripped the head. I fixed this problem using a cut off wheel and cutting the handle. The plumber who put this in also set the faucet back into the wall so I had to remove the plate and chip away some tiles to access that clip. Hard part was getting access.
These are the best videos and explanations that I have ever seen on plumbing. I really enjoy the thorough explanation and even the little tips along the way with polarity, cartridge direct, etc. It really helps to know all the scenarios you have seen to help with any mysteries that might show up. Keep them coming. I'm a subscriber!
This really helps me a lot. Excellent guidance in extracting the cartridge and even though today is already 2021 and this video was published 2010 it still very essential and best way to do it.
Thanks for the help, I had 2 bad cartridges in the house. Do you have a video or tips on increasing hot water time to point of use, coming from a tankless water heater?
What a money saver for me... I went through lots of DIY plumbing videos to find this one. It's the best. I have the older style push/pull on/off valve, but assembly and disassembly were similar. I didn't buy the puller device, but would have made it easier. I just applied pressure to it and once it broke free from whatever it was binding on, it came right out. Couldn't find OEM valve for it at HD or Lowes. Plumbing supply had sign on door, "Licensed plumbers only" guess they don't want my biz.
Thank You So Much! We had a leaking stem, I watched your video and pulled the stem out and took it to RONA and found out Moen was guaranteed for life. Salesperson gave me a new stem for free and no more leak!
I'm going to remove / replace a verry leaky one tomorrow . I've done a sink cartridge one but never a shower one . That one I just pulled retaining clip like this one and pulled like a maniac . It was very tough but came out . I also tried with the plastic removal square shaped one but naaah . Can I use plumbers putty under escutcheon or really need to use silicone caulking ? yeah on second thought shower cartridge is different and if i pull on it like I did sink one I might damage the whole valve . Is silicone oil alright for lubing new cartridge ?
Awesome, I knew there had to be a tool. I've replaced a few using brute strength, and the last one I had to break out with a screwdriver and mallet. Thanks for this video.
This is as good an instructional video as they come. Thank you. It definitely made me get a puller. I thought I was doing something wrong since the cartridge was not coming out at all. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video. I have watched it over and over this weekend. We replaced this valve appx. 4 years with the Danco one and it was a success. Now our drip has returned therefore we purchased another Danco and it did not work. Still dripping. Purchased the Moen 1222 today, installed and still dripping but not as bad. Any ideas? Feel like I am going through the "water torture" at night!
Your video was excellent, very helpful. Thank you. Although, the valve in your video seemingly came out with more ease than the one I had to work on. That puller tool was the lifesaver, and was worked to the very end. But once it broke free it came out with a fair amount of force. Thanks again.
Hi great video! It’s my first time fixing one of these. Question: I installed the cartridge and put the faucet pieces back on but now the handle shuts the water off completely when it’s in the middle position (instead of turning off from right to left) and it’s just cold on the left and just hot in the right. There’s no mixing of temperatures taking place. Can you tell me what I did I wrong?
Great video. I have a master bath with a Jacuzzi tub and a separate shower stall. The tub hot water comes on in about 20 seconds and the flow seems very fast. The Moen Positemp shower takes almost 2 minutes for the hot water to arrive and the pressure is very poor. Could these shower problems stem from a faulty cartridge? Thanks again for a very instructive video. Looking forward to doing some plumbing!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I followed your instructions (I changed the carttridges in two of my showers). Everything worked great for a day, now both of the valves or cartridges are dripping. Could you please give me some advise on how to stop the drip? Thank you again!!! Antonio
Thanks for the valuable video! I think without it, I would have likely massacred the fittings trying to get the cartridge out as I had no idea about the clip as it was hard to see due to a mounting/spacer plate behind the shower surround. Bought the right part ($40) & right tool ($13) thanks to your guidance. Completed the repair successfully for about $53 and less than an hour (not counting the trip to HD). Thank you!
Couple of things. Use plumbers grease , not Vaseline or petro based lube, on the new cartridge body and o ring before installing it. Suggest you also put anti seize lube on the threaded parts to make it easier to remove next time (year’s away). Finally, the brass stem has a notch on the very end of one flat. That notch goes down towards the drain. That orients the handle correctly as he states.
Thanks so much for this video! I removed and replaced my cartridge - it was a little different than this, and the clip was a hassle, but everything here was MOST helpful!
I think its also worth mentioning that if you're not in too big of a hurry you can get the parts from Moen for free if your the owner. I had to use the puller tool to remove my cartridge as well but once I got it removed I couldn't for the life of me get the new cartridge installed without the side seals falling off even with plumbers grease . I went and bought a one inch flap sander disc and polished the housing a little, put some plumbers grease on it and that allowed the cartridge to go in.
I have used this video for the second time and replaced the moans of both my shower handles. Thank you, very well made, simple to understand and apply even for a dummy like me!
Your video mentioned that debris could have caused the malfunction. Well it has caused my valves malfunction because when I drained by water heater I did not flush it, instead I just refilled it. After that we experienced all kinds of rust flakes clogging the faucets. I thought I had flushed the pipes but recently our shower stopped giving us hot water. Will replacing the cartridge fix this issue or is it necessary to somehow flush out the house pipes?
Great video, what's the difference between the 1222 and the 1222B cartridge? Also, the problem I have is that when I turn on the hot water all the way, the water essentially turns off. The cold water runs fine and this only happens for the shower. The sink next to the shower works perfectly fine. Could this solve my problem? Thanks!
Thanks for the video. This is exactly what I had to do today. The video explained exactly what needed to be done and the Home Depot guy pointed me right to the part and puller. Two thumbs up!
Hi Greg. Excellent video! your clarity helped me change the cartridge without breaking anything. I have one problem though. After completing the install, my water only stays off when the handle is pointing straight up. Could this be the symptom in which I have to turn the stem 180 deg clockwise? Thanks again!
My cold side is spewing warm water for the last few weeks. Cold side used to work just fine. Not sure what changed. This is a 2 and 1/2 year old house. Can anything else be wrong like water heater pressure or other plumbing issue beside cartridge?
I saw a Moen video and they said put some silicone grease on black rubber part of cartridge. I had plumber change this before and he didn’t do it. What’s your opinion on using the grease? Do I use or not?
Hey Greg, my shower turns on the water by pulling the handle straight back and it turns the water off by pushing it back in. This Moen you demonstrated turns the water on by turning the handle. Does mine have a different type of valve? What's it called? I think the brand name on mine says Price Pfister. Thanks for your help.
Thanks so much for posting this! We are redoing our bathroom from scratch and I was having a small leak from the new cartridge- this totally gave me the confidence to deal with this problem!
What is the cartridge part no.? It looks like mine. Do all the Moen single-handle showers come with the handle adaptor? I didn't see one on mine, it may be the reason my handle did stop engaging with the valve after it has been used for many years.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I DID THIS MYSELF. AND I AM SAD TO SAY I WAITED MNTHS BECAUSE I THOT IT WLD TAKE TOO MUCH TIME!!!!! CAN U BELIEVE THAT? IF I HAD ONLY WATCHED THIS VIDEO MONTHS AGO!!! THE ONLY POSITIVE THING AS I SIT HERE IS,,,I JUST FINISHED FIXING THAT THANKS TO THIS VIDEO,,, AND NOW I HAVE NO DRIP!!!
This might be a silly question. But are there many types of cartridges for all the different type of Moen valves? Would I have to find the manual to locate the model number for the cartridge or is it engraved somewhere on the valve itself. Also, if the cartridge refuses to budge, if I purchase a puller, it should work? I didn't want to tug too hard because I didn't want to break or do something to the pipes. The problem with my shower is that I get no cold water. Just scalding hot water...help!
Great tutorial video. I just need to know how would I know what cartridge I need for my shower/tub. Its just your basic fiberglass stand up shower and sit down tub. Its kinda like the one in this video but its fiberglass all around.
Where can I buy that same puller as you? The ones for sale are aluminum and the prongs bend. They are terrible. Looks like yours is solid steel and commercial grade.
FANTASTIC video. Had all the parts but didn't know what the hell I was doing. I followed along, step by step and finished in time for dinner. Thank you!!
@ramonasplumber Thanks again... after putting it in, it looks like it drips about a drop or 2 an hour. Will this clear up? Should I try to reseat the valve or is the problem the import valve? What's your best guess?
There is a high limit setting as to how far the knob will turn towards hot, but that can be set to full rotation. There are sometimes stops built into the valve body allowing one to stop water to the valve and repair it, but they are not always included in the valve chosen by the builder. That is an up grade. Moen high limit stop is a white plastic splined ring with a bump on it matching the ridge at top of valve collar.
Atta boy, this is a working forum for the people by the Plumber as a gift of generosity. Speaking of .....Tip, Jar exists!, for your pleasure and my ability to continue videos.
The only thing I would add, is to make sure that you use the lubricant on the gasket when inserting the valve! Not doing so added about a half hour to the job. Other than that, excellent repair video! It's so nice to go into a project like this with a little bit of knowledge. My old valve was way harder to get out than yours, though. Doh!
I have the same faucet. My problem is I have no hot water when I rotate it to the left. Any ideas on water it could be? This a new house and a spare bathroom and I didn't even know it until we had some house guest and they made me aware of it. Plenty of cold water but no hot water.
If a cartridge goes bad would it cause a leak that would send water behind the wall? I've got water dripping into the basement from the faucet somewhere.
It's a new Moen, but the shower's not hot. Used your video to try to move the Posi Temp limiter. Got the set screw and handle off, but can't make the Phillips screw turn to get at the plastic stops. I'm afraid I'll bust the body if I give in any more muscle. Help!
Just moved into a new (to me) house. The Moen single handle shower valve, that looks exactly like the one in this video, has the hot and cold reversed; hot at first going to cold as the handle is rotated counterclockwise. In this video, at about the 10 minute mark, you say the hot & cold can reversed by simply turning the stem 180 degrees (with the water on) and you motioned turning it clockwise, but you didn’t demonstrate it. When I follow your instructions the water comes on & stays on with the stem rotated 180 degrees. What am I missing?
I've heard of the moen tool and the crap imposer tool for moen. is this true? should I stick the the main moen brand puller? and is their a different puller for regular moen cartridges? or just get the the more spendy one?
@6852033 I had the exact same issues no HC marking. Also the head on the hex screw stripped too much hard water. I cut the from of with a cut of wheel. I did take me a bit longer as well.
I have 6 different pullers, I have been told that the cheap ones are cheap and should not say you need a professional one... but as you and I agree, cheap is not good when doing Moen. Parts or tools, go OEM only. thanks for your support on my thoughts. If you read the 200 comments you will find the other folks ideas ...

Hi, Great Video. How about if you can not get the screw out of the Moen handle. I'm using 7/64 allen key, doesn't seem to be losing the screw ?
Just a quick thank you for posting this how-to. You saved me a bunch of money by showing how to fix my shower myself.

Your advice was dead on and fixed the problem. I appreciate your making these videos and helping out so many people. Thank you very much.
Great video. But no lubricant on the new cartridge?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I followed your instructions (I changed the carttridges in two of my showers). Everything worked great for a day, now both of the valves or cartridges are dripping. Could you please give me some advise on how to stop the drip? Thank you again!!!
Antonio
Thank you for the easy to follow directions and tips.
Thank you, very well made, simple to understand and apply even for a dummy like me!
great Video! Any need for faucet grease on these valves. Thanks Again
Great video but who makes the "larger" cartridge puller that fits over the 1222 cartridge? When can I get one?
THANK YOU! You saved us a ton of money, and were very clear...step by step!
You pointed out some very important potential difficulties that no other video showed.
My cold side is spewing warm water for the last few weeks. Cold side used to work just fine. Not sure what changed. This is a 2 and 1/2 year old house. Can anything else be wrong like water heater pressure or other plumbing issue beside cartridge?
Should you clean out the housing with some vinegar and should you put some lube on the rubber seals. Thanks for the video..
I saw a Moen video and they said put some silicone grease on black rubber part of cartridge. I had plumber change this before and he didn’t do it. What’s your opinion on using the grease? Do I use or not?
This is by far the BEST video on RUclips on this topic. THANK YOU.
Great job explaining this! Excellent demonstration.
We bought a puller at Lowes that did not work!!!! Where did you get that BIG puller?
Thanks for the video. I was able to change my Moen Cartridge and fix my shower today. Thank You !!
Thank you for the great video. It helped me fix a leaking shower.
Great tutorial, especially for explaining how to use the removal tool ;)
Thank you VERY much!!!!! :)
Thanks so much for posting this! We are redoing our bathroom from scratch and I was having a small leak from the new cartridge- this totally gave me the confidence to deal with this problem!
Hi, my name is Annie and I did it!! Thank you very much! Your video REALLY helped me!
Just scalding hot water...help!
very simple ! Thank you Ramonas Plumber !!!
just want to say thank you for your video... took me just 30 minutes including getting the parts at HD ..and save us money :-)
This is the best tutorial video, very thorough. Thank you!
Thank you!!
Without a doubt, straight forward no nonsense and VERY helpful and informative video.
@ramonasplumber Thanks again... after putting it in, it looks like it drips about a drop or 2 an hour. Will this clear up? Should I try to reseat the valve or is the problem the import valve? What's your best guess?
I just completed this installation. However it is now leaking from the faucet. Do you have any recommendations to fix this?
Video was well presented, I feel pretty confident that I can do the same repair myself. We'll see how it goes!
Excellent presentation, thank you. 👍🏼
Wow, first time the poster has ever actually commented back to me. Keep up the great work, ramonasplumber.
Thank you! You saved me from ripping a hole in the wall to get to the back of the bathtub fixture!
Thank you for your video! Saved me money!
