Amazingly, one set of my grandparents used actual candles in their Christmas trees for close to 30 years without incident. Then, in their first year of using tungsten bulbs the cat had a fit and attacked the tree during which one of the bulbs broke and cause a small fire (more like smoking/smouldering). XD
I'm not saying you're lying, but there's almost no way that it went 30 years without an issue. I don't care what people say. Fire and trees shouldn't mix. I'm a metal forger and an inspector by the way. I would have to force myself to stay up for as long as the tree is up with candles on it with a fire extinguisher ready. Also would not recommend anyone doing this if they have natural gas or propane in their house.
@crazyhorse2730 our family has put candles on real trees for hundreds of years. From as far back as my 90 year old grandma's memory goes to this day - not a single incident.
@MiBzAn You're lucky, that's all I have to say. I'd say that with kids running around and having presents under the tree would increase the chances of something getting bumped and having multiple fire sources to put out.
I live in Denmark, and both sides of my family always have real candles on the tree. Never had an issue! Make sure you place the candle, so there's no branch above, don't leave it alone, extinguish the flame when it's getting low, and only bring in the tree close to Christmas so it doesn't dry out beforehand. We've had black needles a few times, but they smell bad enough, that you'll notice way before there's any actual dangers!
Jason!! The MOST opportune time for a training session with the troops! A deuce and a half on wide fog for should protect Fenton and also put out the tree fire as well! LOL
My aunt put the family's antique candles on a tree once when I was a kid. They lit them and everyone hovered anxiously around for a minute then decided that was enough and snuffed them out with the antique snuffer. I always remember how stressed everyone was while it was lit. It was pretty though!

Still pretty Dangerous. Even If the tree IS fresh IT Burns Like hell. If the needles are slighlty dry....your room IS Pitch black from smoke 10 Seconds after the First misshap happend.

One year we took the tree that we cut down from a Christmas shop and took it outside and lit it on fire to see how quickly it would go up. We never had a real tree again, and the Christmas lights were always turned off unless you were sitting in that room. But the tree we burned lit up our whole yard for like a minute and a half, and then it was gone.
We had normal candles all my life until last years. So 20+ years. 7 of those years with cats. Nothing happened, because we're not stupid and only have them on, when we're looking at it.

I went to a christmas mess in Switzerland several years in a row. They always had a christmas tree about 4m high indoors and ALWAYS with real candles burning. That always amazed me even back than.
My family has been using real candles since the dawn of time and will continue to do so. We just use basic fire safety protocols (careful placement so they are secure and cannot burn other decorations, only have them burn under supervision, see something say something, blow them out when they’re burned too far down or behave weirdly, and a bucket of water nearby in case of incidents). In 50 years, we have not had a single incident, just a bit of wax on the baubles.
We have clip on lights that look like little candles. Just know you'll get your hands scratched up as you weave the lights (inner to outer branches, starting at the bottom) throughout the tree. But they look good after an hour or so, if done just right.
great tip, water your Christmas tree instead of leaving it dry if it's a real tree. Fir trees unless they are in a wild fire are hard to light in fire when they are hydrated and healthy.
In Germany, most use of course LEDs today, but a lot are still using real candles. Big difference is that we dont use plastic christmas trees. We use real ones.
