- Gates are one of my all time favorite budget decks and now they are better than ever thanks to Lost Cavern of Ixalan's Spelunking! How quickly can we get the Maze's End kill in Historic if all of our lands enter the battlefield untapped? Let's find out!

this deck, while really great, really points out that maze's end needs its own animation on the win/kill. kinda like getting 10 poison counters, has a unique animation, cause this just looks like the oppont conceding and not you winning in some way.
Seriously, it's such a cool kill, it deserves an animation.
There are a lot of really cool and unique cards that should have animation but I think the focus on those animations goes specifically to cards in standard sets. If it’s printed direct to explorer or historic they don’t care.
@@Samst0nUnfortunately wotc is under the thumb of papa hasbro and hasbro is gonna whip wotc/mtg into the dirt until they stop making money 😭 and standard is one of their big money makers... at least it used to be.
@@Gattsu65 corporate trying to whip the game into money-making shape is why animations exist at all; otherwise they'd be putting that budget towards adding new cards
If nothing else, all “win the game” cards and all “lose the game” cards should share a generic animation. Doesn’t even have to be on-theme. Just… something.
if you use one Hanweir Battlements you can give your titan haste with spelunking out to pull 3 other gates

Druid class pops off absurdly hard with this deck, so glad to see this archetype making a swing back in historic!
This is probably the final push i needed to give gates a try, ive really been enjoying the idea of running decks with wincons in the land base!!
The deck's a blast and cheap to put together, I would recommend.
Try the cave budget deck, it’s actually p good and funny
Seth's pop off at 37:00 was well deserved - some clutch playing/draws there
If only we had the paper Thriving land versions of the most recent gates. "Seek" burns my eyes, but it's fantastic to see gates stomp.
Sure could be helpful to just fit those into the Pioneer version to give you more types of gates to run instead of wanting multiples of a few but mostly running singletons to get the 10 for Maze's End.
Spelunking is essentially what Gond Gate does in formats its legal in, the difference is that Gond Gate is really easy to tutor. Really happy to see this effect in Arena
Gond Gate doesn't untap your Mazes End, though. So while Spelunking my not be as easy to consistently find, it does more.
This deck is such a joy to play, super fun and not too oppressive
Yeah, it's one of my favorites, and cheap!
It's almost "fair" magic, it has good matchups, bad matchups, great ways to recover, when it goes off it goes off hard but you do things that can be interacted with before you go off, definitely one of the fun ones
I think Spelunking and Scapeshift are enough for their own Against the Odds video. You actually ramp mana while finding all your best lands!
scapeshift doesn't ramp unless the lands you get trap for multiple mana
@@ianford9221it’s more like fast mana, you can tap all your lands and float the mana, scapeshift, get a bunch of untapped lands, and maybe do it again.
Spelunking, Scapeshift, and that Valakut landfall card that exiles cards then deals damage for each exiled card at end of turn..... Sounds like a deck to me.
Scapeshift is great in gates. You can't tap all your mana, then sac all the Lands and when they all come in untapped you have even more mana. I play it Historic Brawl and have won several games with the combo.
@@freddejesus9222I love Scapeshift in Brawl Gates. If you have Maze's End and any 9 other lands, you just win.
I built Gates after the last time they were on Budget Magic and have been having a blast with it. This is an amazing upgrade to the deck, can't wait to see how it goes.
That mirror match at the end of the video was honestly a great closure for this video but also showed how strong *Spelunking* actually is here, assuming your opponent didn't had it in the deck from these 3 games.

Great video. You could swap the 3 Flame-Blessed Bolt in the sideboard with 3 Torch the Tower (same rarity, but slightly upgraded effect).
Rebel Salvo is functionally the same as Soul Sear in this deck. And all accounts have one copy (from the Rebel Armory starter deck), so this saves an uncommon wildcard. You could play one of each, to play around Meddling Mage and other cards that care about cards having the same name as each other.
Three Maze’s End is probably too many; you need only one and can tutor it with Primeval Titan. You could replace two of them with an additional 1 Gruul Guildgate and 1 Izzet Guildgate. This would help with having the right colors for mana costs and making the deck even more budget friendly.

Torch the Tower

Torch the Tower deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If this spell was bargained, instead it deals 3 damage to that permanent and you scry 1.
If a permanent dealt damage by Torch the Tower would die this turn, exile it instead.
TLDR: Torch the Tower is strictly better than Flame-Blessed Bolt. One Rebel Salvo and one Soul Sear hedge against ‘choose a card name’ effects. Three Maze’s End might be excessive.
Few things in life are as satisfying and good as when they GG early and lose soon after.
I played the other gate deck starting from when you put it out and got myself to the rank below mythic, but stopped playing for a couple months due to life. I just played 3 games and this deck is way better!
The game against the Jund opponent with Kroxa was the single best game I’ve seen you play! 🎉🎉🎉

Strange to see how gates started as a meme deck in standard and is now one of the best combo decks in historic.

Also no shade to Spelunking, but I think having a gates Nykthos (Baldur's Gate) is also a contender for MVP. It's not legal in any other format since it's a commander card, so it gives you a huge edge in this format vs explorer

Great deck, had a similar idea for an explorer version with Crackling Perimeter, but arena didn't port It in. Algo, just a tip, you should not start taping baldur first. If you wait till the last possible moment, you could net more mana which would end being relevant to win faster.

I have wanted to make a good gate deck forever, this one is fun. First game, easy victory.
You know Seth I would be happy about this, I have loads of Gates and I know at least one person who would probably loan me some Primeval Titans if I begged enough but I only have one spelunking which I had in my binder for Cave Tribal in Standard lol You've driven up the price now so that's gonna be harder to get than the Titans or Plazas! XD I'm laughing but it's a sobbing laugh at how comical this is!
So I was looking for a new deck and always loved Gates, so this was perfect. Went from Bronze 4 to Diamond in two days. Thank you @SaffronOlive @MTGGoldfish

I love when you bring up your family's corrections history. I've worked in corrections for years. I think that, like anything else, you can't take a song too seriously, you shouldn't take a lifestyle too seriously, and you definitely shouldn't take your job too seriously (gotta have that work-life balance). 🤷♂️

You should play habiwar battlements. So that you can get it with prime time along with a red gate, give prime time haste since it comes in untapped now, and then get two more lands

Feels a bit like "we have Amulet Titan at home". Any time you mess with features of cards meant to balance them "ignore enters tapped", always a decent chance for brokenness.

Do you think that gates could be a viable deck in pioneer now? I know it lacks baldurs gate and prime time. Does the lack of those two cards make it too slow?

Gond Gate did that too, but only for gates. This untaps all lands
Deck idea: Heliod, radiant down + a bunch of shuffle/draw 7, and kill your opponent by using blue zenith or something really big with an x or colorless cost
Enough green sources? First three games were all missing them from the starting hand.
I know the idea is to have a budget friendly gates but, if we were to spend more, is there any consideradation for a Yorion version with extra Navigation Orbs and maybe Golos/Atraxa?
As a combo deck, the number 1 priority is consistency. Going up to 80 cards reduces the ease of finding your combo pieces without adding much to the deck.
@ecoKady not necessarily, with orbs you can find extra gates as you would, but it also gives you extra lands to find (I'm testing with around 41) so you have more copies of mazes end and baldurs. Adding cards that tutor your lands and draw more cards shouldn't take much of the consistency in this specific case
Do you think Spelunking Gates will be playable in Pioneer? Or does it need too many Digital only cards?
You'll have to find a replacement for prime time and explore since those are not legal, but it could be good if you do find a suitable replacement!!!

On the kitchen table I'd just go with the paper ones from CLB they're supposed to replace, also Gond Gate, of course. If you want something tournament legal for Modern/Pioneer you really only get Thran Portal and Gateway Plaza, the latter of which I wouldn't run personally. Though, if you are, you also don't get Baldurs Gate and I don't think this will be as awesome without it

Cavalier of Thorns can block decently. Sylvan Scrying is available as a non-rare for just tutoring Baldur's Gate/Maze's End.
It took me longer than I care to admit that Seth's green screen was tilted slightly and that it wasn't a hair or crack in my phone...
I feel like this deck probably has bad matchups against the new discover and Amelia combo decks since instant speed removal isn’t online until turn 4 normally.
Find someone who loves you the way Seth loves gates decks.

Is there any reason why this doesn't run at least one Gond Gate? It can be tutored with Route and Titan, taps for colorless or like a Reflecting Pool and still allows the same massive tempo gain that having Spelunking out does
Its not legal in historic, i assume they didn’t print it in the online dnd commander set for whatever reason.
If I had to guess, it's likely because Gond Gate isn't on Arena.
