Been running 4ft wide 50ft beds, 18 inch pathways for 3 years and thought it worked really well. Glad to see someone convert over. You can really get a lot more in those wide beds and for harvest and planting reasons you really need an 18 inch plath or you'll be mashing plants in the next bed sometimes. Geat video!
Thanks for the update on Jesse and his new farm. He gave me things to consider and think about in terms of trying new things. Always appreciate your videos from other peoples' farms.
You mentioned with going to 4' rows you have to build in cross over pathways. I have gone to 4 foot rows but I'm so tight for space i did not want to lose that cross over space to a pathway. So my thought was to add a stepping stone, (cinder block or patio stone, or even a rock) in the center of the 4' bed every once in awhile so I can easily step over. Also less pathway maintence. Every little bit helps.
VERY interesting!!! Like the bed width and path way discussions. I am strongly considering 36 inch beds and 24 inch paths. Somewhere I listened to the 'edge effects' I am thinking of planting 36 inch wide bed like a 30 inch wide bed
@@yurinosenko3151 We have. a giant container store about 30 minutes from here, so I just called them and they would tell me when they had some good, 35 gallon barrels that were food safe (did not previously contain chemicals). Pickle barrels wind up on craigslist a lot too
The drawback to setting everything up on a 48” bed which probly won’t affect Jesse as much as he moves around but for the rest of us that are more of your typical farmers and will be at our farms for life but Jesse won’t be this young and energetic as he is now and won’t always be able to jump across beds and reaching across or to the center of a 48” bed will not be easy. It doesn’t sound like it would be that hard but trying to balance and reach when your older is not easy like when your 35. I don’t understand why someone in this industry would want to move so many times tho. Sure, physically moving things isn’t that tough when your young. But, there are so many things that we put into a farm that can not be moved!! We do so many improvements to our souls that I can’t imagine walking away from all that work and having to start from scratch every 2 1/2 years. This is why family farms used to be in the family for 100-200 years but times are a changing anymore
Jessie! About the hay, check out Jim kovaleski. He is a market farmer who uses a scythe to harvest hay to mulch his grass fed no till beds. Vids on youtube.
So where are you living now? I'm moving to wake forest. I can not find anything like your talking about. I have 6 Chickens and 3 Ducks that I love so much and 3 dogs.
You guys are awesome thanks for all the inspiring content! Checkout my farm on the west coat of Canada, @the.backwoodsfarm . We switched to no till after 7 years in big part because of your content
Let's see. ALL of our infrastructure and ALL of our tooling and ALL of our implants and ALL of our water solutions are set-up for 30" beds, so let's go to 48" beds?
Good stuff Josh! Excited to see Jesse give a tour of his next new farm in another couple of years 😂

Now heres one we've all been waiting for
So when they move..Do they just leave all the soil they have put in ?
I don't know maybe I missed it in some of your videos was there a reason you got rid of the sheep?
What kind of hearter did you use for the tunnel?
Hey we’re those barrels empty or filled with water?
Likely water, since it has much more heat capacity to stabilize temperatures (that's their job).
Jessie!

Love Jim and I've been using grass past two years with sucess. Just got my scythe a month ago. 😁 Love seeing Jesse set up new farm so quickly too!

So what is the surface of the market garden? thanks
How did he go from buying the property in December, to plants in the ground and dozens of beds in just 5 months??
Why don’t you do 36 inch beds?
Another great video! What's Jesse's last name? I've seen him on Facebook but I can't remember.
