I am still entertained by Streets of Fire. The music, the action...Diane Lane. It's just a fun film, not perfect, but fun. It was suppose to be part one of a Tom Cody trilogy that Walter Hill was going to make, however, since it failed at the box office, we will never get to see the continuing adventures of the Michael Pare character.

The 3 hour and 49 minute cut of Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In America is a masterpiece. I’m glad I haven’t seen the short version but I’m terrified that I know it exists because I just probably am one day if only to see how bad it is. Also intrigued about the newer 4 hour 11 minute cut.

It was always great to watch Siskel and Ebert as a kid. It was the only way to see clips from a movie that hasn't come out yet. It really got you excited to see the full films. It's hard to believe how easy it is to see footage today, it's almost taken for granted.

One of only a handful of shows I've seen where I like all four films. In this case I saw two of them brand-new - Gremlins and Star Trek III. I'm glad I didn't see Once Upon a Time in America new in the shorter American cut - don't know how that might have prejudiced me against that film, now one of my very favorites. I really like Streets of Fire also, and Gremlins has grown on me; Trek III is all right, but suffers from coming between the two best entries in the series and for being, as Siskel & Ebert both mention, predictable starting with the title. All in all it was a great week to go to the movies back in 1984, especially if you could see Leone's masterpiece in Europe at the same time.

Ebert Looked at movies from the perspective of audiences first which is why he usually would go into why a movie made xyz money if it was good or bad and also would give a nod to a movie if it at least "knew its audience". Siskel had a philosophy degree and was more into what the director or writer was trying to say with the movie.

Loved Gremlins. As siskel and ebert said it subverted the "misunderstood critters" trope of the time and skirted the line of mean spiritedness and dark humor. Interestingly it was supposed to be a christmas release due to the setting of the movie but the studio released it in Summer due to the violent content.

GREMLINS-A real classic; I enjoyed the sequel a lot more than Roger and Gene appeared to have at the time (Gene's review is at www.newspapers.com/clip/81039300/gene-siskel-movie-reviewgremlins-06-08/ and continues at www.newspapers.com/clip/81039331/gene-siskel-movie-reviewgremlins-06-08/ )
STREETS OF FIRE-A very good rock musical, full of songs that are still bangers, including Dan Hartman's "I Can Dream About You" and the contributions to the film by the great Jim Steinman (who may rest in peace, as he died a month before Siskel & Ebert's review of it was reposted here); it's interesting to note that Roger seemed to feel the same way. (Gene's review is at www.newspapers.com/clip/81040162/gene-siskel-movie-reviewstreets-of-fire/ and you can see the commercials I extracted from the first LA broadcast of the film at ruclips.net/video/4MtNULfAWzg/видео.html )

Wow. What a great critique of everything that sucked about the 1980s. (I lived thru the 1980s and enjoyed them - not without a sense of irony) but they really WERE 1950s 2.0. Such superficial BS. Still - if they gave us Amy Madigan, Willam Dafoe & the fall of the Berlin Wall, I can't dismiss them. But - yeah, there was a lot of artifice & pretense. Current times are strange - but experience has shown that ALL times are strange (in retrospect).
RIP Roger & Gene. - you were a fixture for generations.

The music was also a highlight, and it did leave you wanting more which is a good thing.
