I sailed on this beautiful ship in 1972 at the age of 10. These pictures bring back lots of good memories. Remember I got thrown off the top bunk bed one night in heavy storm. Ouch !!! We felt like Royalty during that week.
Thank you. The epitomy of elegance. Wonderful to see these pictures. Brings back indelible memories. Was lucky enough to have been on the S.S. Raffaello.
I sailed on this beautiful ocean liner 50 years ago from Palermo to NYC. I have never seen anything as elegant since. Everything was modern and sleek. The food was amazing! I got to hang out with some awesome people.
thank you for posting great ship ,was on it in 1969 I was 11 ,some facts I remember ,the food first night unbelievable,2nd to 7th nigh don t know was sea sick the rest, they had 3 classes each had their own movies ,I sneaked in all of them, skeet shooting in back of ship, great music and dancing every night, ticked off captain because I went to very front of ship all I remember was uphill bit and rained salt water ,so sadto see it at bottom of ocean for a clasy ship for it s time thank you for the memories aldo
This is the first time I've gotten a really good look at the interior of this beautiful ship. The Rafaello and Michelangelo deserved so much better. I think of how they might have changed over the years as did the QE2 and the France/Norway what with renovations and redecorating. The TV series "The Love Boat" helped to make cruising very popular and I wonder what would have happened if the Italian Line or maybe the Italian government had held onto the two sisters a little longer. Maybe they would have had successful profitable careers though maybe under different ownership. ***I'm curious as to why there are so few portholes in the hulls of the Rafaello and Michelangelo. Does anyone know about this?
I believe most or all of the furnishings from the Normandie were removed before the fire - I think many of them were used again on the Liberte (and possibly Ile de France) in the 1950's; some were probably worn & discarded after that but others are around, by now most people would know their origin! (especially since Deco has been so popular for years now). Would love one of the small paintings or wall panels by French artists used in the cabins- there were likely hundreds of them!
no struck by a topedo in a port when she was a floating baracks in iran in 1983, part of her hull is still submerged in the harbor, most has been cleared away though
My dream Normandie piece would be one of those bronze dinning room doors. That said i would gladly settle for one of those clocks given to VIP passengers on the first crossing. I own a replica one but it's not the same...
As I posted on the Michelangelo video, where are the artworks and furnishings of these ships _ I'll bet most of the stuff is still around, probably much of the furniture was made by Cassina or some other top Italian company. 60's modern design at its absolute best, not to mention the incredible color schemes - very very cool.
Just an opinion, but has anyone ever seen more beautiful liners than the twins? Compare their sleek profiles to any other ships of the past (including the bloated Normandie and the rather comely Queens). The last really beautiful liners are the QE2 and the Oceanic.
can anybody help me find information on the raffaelo crossing of November 7th 1971? During the crossing the ship suffered a " bruise" during the nights of the 13th and 14th to arrive in new York on the 16th. I was on it and I would like to collect documentation about that particular crossing if anyone would have the infornation please contact me here
I crossed the Atlantic in 1974 on the Rafaello from New York to Cannes, It was incredible!

Thank-you for posting....This brings back so many memories ! I was on this Beautiful Ocean Liner in 1967 as a young child with my Grandparents.
Sailed on her from Napoli to Nee York the summer of 1968 when I was 16. What a wonderful trip!!
I sailed her April 1969 New York to Naples and I was nineteen. A truly fantastic voyage.
This is a beautiful video. The ambience is as contemporary as the Raffaello was when it was launched, smooth, but edgy and exciting. Thank you.

Stunning Design!!!
I lik this video more and more each time I watch it.
I agree, it would be wonderful to track that stuff down. I am hopeful one day I will be able to purchase an item from the grand ocean liner Normandie.
Was on this ship in September 1972 8 years old

The SS Raffaello was a stylish and beautiful. When the Italian Line went out of Business, her life was pretty much over. How sad that is.
very nice video
lahrdeco
Just found this. Great!
Both songs are performed by Enia, the second one is titled "Orinoco flow" !!

Look at her interiors! Why didn't she and Michelangelo didn't have a second chance in life like France had as Norway?
