Great overview Matt. 02:54, make sure you have "Thunderbolt OUT" on the monitor/general settings set to OFF. That will let you choose the 72Hz on the Mac (I had the same problem).
you set the maximum resolution supported by the monitor and then start>display settings>scale and layout>change the size of text, apps, and other items>125% or 150% or whichever suits you. This way you get to enjoy the best resolution for the media and still be comfortable .
I believe you can get max resolution and refresh when connected through the provided DisplayPort. I have it as well, and I prefer to keep it at the high resolution, and then adjust the apps to increate size of fonts as needed. (Photoshop, Safari, Teams....) Most apps have some way of adjusting them.
Great over view of the monitor, Matt! Wow, 2 thunderbolt! I'd love to see these gaming and content production hardware from LG here in Brazil, but don't seem to find this latest tech around.
I recently got my first ultrawide monitor and it's amazing! Having a small portable monitor as a secondary display instead of a full 24" monitor sounds like a great idea and saves up space. I'm just trying to find a 2K one that doesn't take up too much space and isn't expensive.
Hi Matt. MacOS natively runs on 110ppi or 220ppi. The "retina" displays Apple uses are 220 ppi while the others are 110ppi. 220 ppi is 5k at 27inch displays which is why LG made the 5k display 5 years ago specifically for macs and why the studio display resolution is 5k rather than 4k. The pro display XDR is 6k because it's larger thus needs more pixels to have the same ppi as the studio display at 220. The LG monitor you bought which is 40 inches and 5k by 2k is roughly 140 ppi. This causes it to be in an uncomfortable middle ground which forces mac os to either adjust by having everything be super tiny or super huge. When scaled to a non-integer scale it ends up taking a lot of GPU power to run it. going from 110 to 220 ppi is just a matter of doubling the pixels, but going from 110 to 140 is a more difficult adjustment. Thus, to improve performance they end up limiting the refresh rate of the monitor instead of the resolution. Hope this helps! I can send you an article that explains this far better than can.
Hi David, I was actually able to change the refresh rate to 72Hz, it had nothing to do with macOS but rather a setting within the LG monitor itself. But thanks for the taking the time to explain this, it does make a lot of sense.
Surprisingly this is one area where Windows excels over Mac OS (and GTK under Linux) - since Windows supports proper fractional scaling. On Mac and Linux you end up scaling up to the nearest larger integer and then scaling down to the fractional desired amount, while on Windows, applications are requested to render at the desired fractional scale. For vector-based UI elements the performance penalty is zero while for raster-based elements it is still minimal since this is done on the UI element level.
I don't think what you're saying about scaling performance on the GPU is true for these new M series chipsets. They are optimized to meet a wide array of scaling & not take any measurable performance hit in the process of doing so.
Great review, I like the idea of the small portable screen at side. I'm using 2 27inch monitors at the moment but want to move over to an ultrawide at some point.
I actually have multiple setups, dual 27 4k dell P/U series, dual 32 4k LG ergo stand, and a dell U4021qw + dell U2718q. and recently ordered apple studio display... my personal take is that, for working, dual 32 > dual 27 > ultra wide in productivity perspective, for personal time, ultra-wide is pretty cool.
Great review! The brightness really is the dealbreaker for me. I have the LG 34WK95U-W which is the 34" 5K2K version from a few years ago and that's rated at 450 nits. I work in a very bright room with a wall of windows and even at max brightness I wish I had some more power to work with. Setting the brightness to 65% to emulate the 300 nits of the 40WP95C so far has made stay away from upgrading. LG, please make a 500+ nit version of this monitor! :)
To unlock all resolutions use SwitchRes (shareware for Mac). My M1 MB Air offers 5k native, but not my 2020 iMac 27". With SwitchRes I can use 5120x2160 72Hz with Thunderbolt. The LG is too dim, works only in a dim room and the matte finish is too fuzzy. I prefer my 27" iMac screen. But the LG screen size is perfect. Oh, and buy a set of speakers, the internal ones are bad. For adjusting the volume with Mac kbd use another shareware Sound Control. Magnet has been mentioned in the video.
I have my monitor connected same like yours, with a vertical monitor setup alongside. In the display settings ive set it up. However how do I set it up so that on the smaller vertical monitor I can click on example Internet explorer browser and it opens on the Vertical monitor (It keeps opening on the main larger 40" monitor)...At the moment whatever I open on the vertical monitor it opens directly onto the Main Monitor and keep having to drag the browser, files etc across...
Trying to find a portable monitor like that that doesn't have the IO on the side. Looking for something on the back, so you don't have to have the cables coming off the side.
I prefer the way the 40” complements the desk and with the 49”, you gotta turn your head quite a bit to see anything on the far side. Since the curvature isn’t that intense, reading text is a bit uncomfortable. And to be honest, as a tech addict, I just like changing things up often 😅

do you know where I can buy that wood monitor stand you have in that video? I really like the height of it, and think it will work with a setup I am thinking about
Magnet is great. They need to add a "Middle 3/5ths" setting for ultrawides or something similar. Can't you change accessibility settings to make fonts and icons and everything bigger with the full resolution?
Thanks, Matt, for the video. Lack of default text scale on a Mac OS seems a problem. In Windows, I can easily use 4k with 250% text scaling. It gives me smoother text without losing resolution. It sounds odd when you use 4k monitor at 1080p resolution: you could've bought 1080p monitor for less money for that purpose.
I have the same monitor, didn't like very much the scaled resolution, I've been using the 5K with the Mac, and increased the fonts and zoom in some pages, looks better and reduced my eye strain.
I prefer how the 40” looked on my desk vs the 49” - I was willing to give up the extra screen real estate but then I ended up adding a second monitor anyways lol. And the 40” offered better picture quality!

I’m using a Thunderbolt 4 cable and it turned out that I had to disable the “Thunderbolt Out” option within the monitor itself to achieve 72Hz - You can daisy chain dual thunderbolt monitors with this one.

Because I will use it as a second monitor for outlook, teams, Spotify and web searching. If the letters are too small I am going to buy 1080p
Hi Matt. I bought this monitor after watching your video. I just would like to ask you couple of important questions. I work with Lightroom + Photoshop and edit RAW files and inside Premiere Pro. Would you please tell what picture mode I should be in when I am editing RAW files inside Lightroom and Photoshop and Premiere Pro. Would that be sRGB or DCI-P3 or something else? Also do you need to calibrate this monitor using a calibration software such X-rite Display Pro. Thank you for your help.

You’re right Mac doesn’t offer scaling just the fonts. When you set the monitor to a lower resolution, the picture is still 5K quality, it’s just everything is slighting bigger if that makes sense? If you compared a 34” 1080 vs a 34” 5K and both displays were set to 1080 res, the 5K model will look crisp.
Actually kind of confused why not just use the older 38wn95c which has 3840 x1600 and 120hz 10bit and pretty decent colors plus 450nits... so why buy the newer one which has 5120x 2160..., ive got a 38wn95c and a 27ul850 which im very happy with. i opted for the 38 inch for the reason that ill have high refresh rate for gaming...
I actually had the 38WN95C a couple of years ago and I loved it! But for me, refresh rate isn’t a huge factor, I don’t game and I’m pretty happy with that 40” I previously had the 49” also but that thing was too massive 😅
This would be perfect if it wasn't limited to 60hz. 75 would be better. 120-144hz would be ideal for gaming / content creation. I will probably wait until they eventually release this in OLED or something.
Just to add: you profit from the additional pixels even If you don't use the native resolution. For most crisp results go for 220ppi on Mac but than you are limited in monitor size or you must go for 8k.
Great overview Matt. 02:54, make sure you have "Thunderbolt OUT" on the monitor/general settings set to OFF. That will let you choose the 72Hz on the Mac (I had the same problem).

@@MattNVZION I see … both awesome displays tho … but I also think 49 inch is way too wide… but setups looks great as always:)
Thank you so much!
This would be perfect if it wasn't limited to 60hz. 75 would be better. 120-144hz would be ideal for gaming / content creation. I will probably wait until they eventually release this in OLED or something.
Why get a 5k display if you're not going to use it in 5k?
Just to add: you profit from the additional pixels even If you don't use the native resolution. For most crisp results go for 220ppi on Mac but than you are limited in monitor size or you must go for 8k.
@@HeyJoe89 no you don't. In fact it will be less sharp than a monitor that has native lower resolution.

Deluxe hermano 😁
2:10 Dude i think 4 inches is enough but idk how deep you can take it.
yeah 4 inches is perfect
What's your desk size? And what other stuff is on the desk 😎
Check out my full office tour video, it’s an L Desk, the main space is 72”x30”
Easyrest for mac is your solution
Thanks for the suggestion but I did try easyres and it didn’t work. It ended up being a setting within the monitor.
I had that display at home for just 3 days. After the 3 days i gave him back to the shop. 50hz-60hz is absolutely not useable for my work.
