Project Car Teething Pains - If It Don't Kill You, It Makes You Stronger

  • Over the last few months our Charger has seen a lot of work done to it. Major crash damage repaired, full body massage with paint, a rebuilt transmission and a front end overhaul, so you would expect there would be a few issues with all of that.
And yes, it does have some issues...but none of them related to the work we did!
It's all just part of the game when you start messing with ancient iron.

This was my day, yesterday! I don’t know if God will allow me back in church after my tantrum yesterday.
Absolutely everything I’ve worked on in the past week has been futile. My fresh build of a 1996 5.7 lt4 engine showed me a defective (brand new) Optispark distributor, my complete rebuild of my F250 front end, didn’t solve my problem, I found a new piece that I had bought for my camaro had been broken somehow…..so I decided to fire up my Nova engine for some joy (still has open headers), it fired instantly, but the plastic oil pressure gauge line ruptured and gave me an oil shower! It also bathed part of the Nova in oil, and the Nova is in primer right now!!!!

Stephen King owes you some royalties. Electrical stuff is fun. Had a 72 Cutlass. an unused wire for power windows(i had roll up windows-- thanks GM) grounded against the frame. It shorted out the horn relay which somehow made the seatbelt buzzer go off continuously. I drove it like that for 2 months before the mechanic figured it out. I miss that car

Tony this is actual normal stuff that happens every single time I work on an old Mopar or an old car in general. They always seem to be trouble-free until that one day comes when you decide to start tearing it down and doing a lot of repairs to it and restoring it and showing it a lot of love. The car takes it as a perfect opportunity to start breaking down a little things so that way it knows that you're in a position where you can't say no so you go ahead and start preparing all the stuff. It's not you it's the spirit of the car and it knows that it has you over a barrel at the moment so it's going to take advantage and force you to repair all the little things that it's been holding back from you all these years. That's why things happen at this particular time when you're doing all this other stuff to it. Just accept it and keep showing it love until it finally says okay that's all that there is that needs to be fixed so now I'm going to get out of the street again and let's go have some fun. This is not a mystery. You shouldn't be asking why now. It's something that has happened ever since the first person who decided to start restoring or repairing something that has some age on it that he is emotionally attached to. The car loves you and the car is going to take advantage of that love if you give it an opportunity so you might as well just suck it up and smile and keep buying new parts

He's got a sports car and he's having fun. It had one of those windshield stickers that have MAZDA or WICKED or STYLIN or CLASSY or NOS etc, usually something obvious or dumb. Not this guy. I bought a 1982 Avanti ll with 110,000 miles on a Chevy 305 V8, I knew I would have to spend money on parts needed like to rebuild the front end, brakes, shocks, tune up and minor stuff.
Interesting I took it to several auto shops and they refused to work on it because it had a carburetor and they did want to deal with installing the other parts needed even though I had the source for all new parts. Finally I found someone who most stuff done, when I needed the carburetor rebuilt I found a guy in his 70's that took on the job a great job he did and my car is running like new.
Back in the 1950's we use to work on our own cars mostly flat head 1947 Fords V8's or 6 cylinder Chevys and kept them running, today everything is to complicated for us old timers. I really enjoy your video's, thanks pal.

Absolutely is part of the fun. Got caught in a cloud burst in my 69' LeSabre and after it passed my wipers wouldn't shut off just like yours. Sat at the stop light messing with the switch trying to time it right, then once they finally stopped I noticed that my headlight switch was hot to the touch, so I'm currently going through the electrical changing bulbs and upgrading wires.

Uncle Tony, instead of using 1159 bulbs, a direct replacement that looks like an 1159 is the 198. It has heavy filaments and many road trucks use them. Don't know if they were ever standard equipment from anyone and lots of people never heard of them. Amazon has them for less than a seven dollars for a box of ten. I used them on my motorcycle, and all my vehicles and my 4x8 trailer instead of the 1157 . You would need a sensitive light meter to tell if there is a difference and no issues. Just a better, longer lasting bulb.

I feel that one must approach it this way and look forward to the task - as you said. I moved the gas tank from the cab to the back of my 1957 GMC a month ago and all kinds of things fell apart from there. At least my windscreen wipers work on demand! Good part is you get to know your car better, so when it breaks roadside you have an idea as to where to look first. Very helpful when it's not your car, helping a stranded new friend. I would say you have a piss poor body ground at the dash/firewall back feeding the Turn Wiper break switches. Has to be a common ground problem

The car knows your giving it love so all the old parts that has been hanging in there all them years are giving up now since your giving it your full attention. I think it better off going now instead of a bunch of things slowly down the road. The joys of owning Classic cars and having to replace replaceable parts. I say those parts lasted a long time seems how the car is 56 year old parts needing replaced.

My current project car (sat 8yrs)has been on the road for about 2mo now being used daily.
It's got a fun habit of wanting 300-500$ in parts about every 10-12 days, and I went thru a lot of things I knew would be an issue.
It doesn't really bother me a lot, but I don't really have a decent other driver right now so hopefully these repairs that pop up are things I can take care of in a few hours.
      So far I've been lucky.

The wiper switch magically went out on my ‘67 Dart , luckily, there’s a guy on FABO that lives in the same state that rebuilds Mopar switches! Sent it to him, $100 later, fixed! It’s never a surprise with old cars.

I personally really like the name. It's your car do what you want, the rest of us can just have it grow on us as time goes on.

Tony, Love your show, I have worked on cars all of my career, mostly auto body, but I recently bought a 2000 Chevy Impala from a good friend of mine who bought it brand new and soon as I got into my driveway broke down and ever since then everything possible is gone wrong. I fix one thing and another thing breaks sometimes I just sit back and look at it and laugh.

It's mostly caused by "downtime". When, while you're working on the car, parts that usually are moving just sit for a prolonged period of time they tend to break or stick. It's almost like they thought "We've been sitting for a while now, the car's probably dead. We're not needed any longer, time to retire." 😆

I chased a intermittent no start on my 02' 8.1L Silverado no CEL's went through it all ended up being debris on cam sensor after i rebuilt top end (lifter failure took out cam lobe at 240k) I just recently learned when to just laugh it off on my projects when shit goes wrong. I have been getting into old dirt bikes/jet skis learning to rebuild carbs, have to learn from your mistakes always.

I always thought your Charger was a ‘66 since it doesn’t have the turn signal indicators on the fenders until I saw the center console and realized it’s a ‘67.
I still have an original ‘67 440 4 speed that my dad left me. He bought it brand new in October of 1966 after falling in love with the’66 models.

You have awakened the "Gremlins of Old Cars". I have a '71 Mustang that has the same malady.
I replaced the power steering unit since it was pissing out fluid as fast as I put some in.
    Problem solved. Right ? NO.
Now that the pressure is back to normal, the high side P/S hose goes out. I replace it. Problem solved....you guessed it. NO.
Now the P/S gearbox is leaking. At this point I threw up my hands and said... F ..it.
Tony, the gremlins are winning.. I'm not sure if I need a mechanic or priest.
I feel ya brother. For sure.

When I work on the newer ones I have to make a day of it because they are way more technical and you have to find out the best way just to get to the parts.

You could not have a better background to look at in this video- whatever that car needs- it's worth it. Car's testing the bond with it's owner; and the way Tony smiles about it- well, THAT says it ALL! Where there is Mopar, there is love. This 1967 Charger gave Tony more top shelf video content, actually helping Tony make a few more bucks, while again allowing him to prove his mettle against iron! Dynamite video!

I get it UT! I see so many started projects that get fizzled out on. I get it that life does happen but I think many start a project without understanding all it takes to get things ironed out well. My old F100 I tinkered on for 12 years. I knew what it would take to do it myself when I had time. I let her sit for months till I got the itch to wrench again. If I get another I'll pickup a clean plain jane original like a Valiant or simple 4 dr sedan. They sell for way less and are usually in good shape.
