This is something we need to see more of. I was born with a cleft lip and palate as well and plan on helping likewise people as much as I can in the future as well! Love this and you! Keep it up!
This is great! I am singer and have cl&p. I also had the flap built. Speech therapy with spoon too. Flap or no flap, those that have pitch and tone can always find a place in song. Working with a diction & voice coach , one with cl&p would be ideal, it is remarkable how it can virtualy become non detectable to the untrained ear. Biggest tool is to record and listen, try to new choices with vowels and consonants, change up your breath work, find your head voice and have fun. Listen again and keep add it. CL&P singers tend to have more plateaus so keep at it and be kind yourself.
Thank you so much for making this video! It was very informative. I had a sphincter pharyngoplasty to correct my VPI so my situation is a bit different, and it absolutely affects the way I speak and sing. I'm not even sure if my VPI is 100% fixed, but it's obviously WAY better than before the surgery, and fixed enough to not cause me daily issues. Although I do feel like it negatively affects my ability to sing well.
i'm doing research for writing a character with a cleft palate (or lip? i haven't figured it out yet) who sings, and this video is the most helpful thing! thank you so much, God bless you
You’re welcome. I’m by no means an expert or a doctor but I thought it would be helpful and interesting to talk about cuz no one talks about this kind of stuff.
I was born with a Cleft Palate and just found out 2 months ago that I might need to have a third operation on my Cleft due to slight difficulties I've been having lately. I've got 2 appointments (including a nasal endoscopy), in a week to confirm whether I need the operation. I've been conducting research on what the problem may be to give myself a better understanding of my current situation. Atm, I believe I have VPD since I've often found food and saliva in my nasal cavity. I have also lived with Hypernasal Speech for as long as I can remember, but I've never let it get in the way of my singing (one of my passions). My research is what brought me to your page actually. Update: So I had the appointments this week and turns out I have a small tear at the back of the soft palate on the left side. My surgeon says it’s not actually too bad but he knows that we can definitely make it better.
This video was informative enough to explain everything. I have VPI (as far as I remembered the doctor said the velum is "paralyzed" to make contact/closure with my posterior pharyngeal wall) and certainly singing changes the resonance quality. After surgery I still have hypernasality though.
i have a cleft palate and it really makes me feel terrible everyday how do you over come all of this i wanna sing so bad. sometimes i feel like i will never be able to sing well :(
@@EmilyBahula really? you think so? cause i know the palate matters so much in singing and like im getting vpi surgery soon it's so annoying. it really breaks my heart and i know you might have gone thru the same thing
That’s okay. I’m not super knowledgeable in how the uvula might affect speech or singing. But I did a quick google search and I did read it helps with speaking. But from what I’m reading it shouldn’t greatly affect speech and singing cuz some people have their uvula removed.
@@EmilyBahula in spanish is called campanilla "little bell" thats why the confusion lol well i had a hendidure on my palate fixed with surgery (i am grade I i think) so i dont know, i think i am going to try a few singing lessons and see what happens hehe

I came here for the same exact thing, lol. Good to see some fellow writers out here in the wild!

Amazing. I watched you on YouNow once, I look forward to seeing you again.
I hopefully should be on Younow tonight
Why I'm sounds more clearer when singing but when I speak I ain't saying that I'm hard to understand but I have some little struggles
Depends on if your soft or hard palate was impacted. Speech therapy is also helpful after repair surgery.

I will say speech therapy helps a lot to speak and sing better
And you may not be great at great at singing from the start but I believe anyone can sing even if it takes some practice and coaching.

This will help me improve my singing 😍 thank you so much!!
I'm so glad!
Emily Bahula 😍 hope to sing along with you soon
this was relay intress in what is cleft palate
I dont know if i have VPI , i dont have bell on my throath tho. Do you think that influence somehow on the quality of the singing aswell?
I think any cleft palate can influence the quality of singing because your hard and or soft palate is impacted. Not sure what you mean by bell though.
@@EmilyBahula sorry i ment the uvula. English is not my mother tongue.

Doesn’t hurt to try, it’s surprising what the human body can do.
What types of cleft palate do you have ?
I have a velopharyngeal flap. My soft palate didn't fully develop so they put in a flap of skin. At least that's how I understand that.
