Well thought out story. Experiments using magnetic fields have been shown to interfere with the human mind. The same with infrasound that causes hallucinations. King Cobras and Elephants use infrasound as warnings and communication. Some machinery can cause infrasound. Given the story's location and confines of the ship, all are possible.
