    I would like to offer a video suggestion. I've been running a lot of VMs lately to separate work environments. I dont really want my job stuff integrated with my gaming PC etc. I've been sort of testing what UIs work well, if maybe I can apply some sort of themes to help my brain remember which VM I'm in etc. More important, PERFORMANCE. Using a VM to dev can use a lot of resources so that's something I'm considering as well. Anyway, I'm not mega interested in Cosmic but I subbed a long time ago and pop in every now and then to see whats going on. Good work regardless.

    Still a looooot of polishing needed. Combobox menus are really ugly (rounded highlights inside a squary menu does not work), many components not sized properly (too much wasted space), lack of pixel perfect layouting (non-aligned elements are everywhere)...
    ...but what sets COSMIC apart, is how clean and lean is codebase is compared to gnome or kde, how consistent the core app ecosystem is, how well made and modular is its workflow from the beginning, how efficient it is on low-end hardware, how future-proof it is regarding tech it's using (vulkan/wayland/rust), and how good-looking it's going to be when fully done.
    Keep being tough with your feedback, it's more constructive and helping than saying everything is looking perfect.

    I quite like the app drawer. I like to organise all my apps in folders (e.g. Games, Flathub, System, Creative...), and this app drawer seems to be centered around that.
    Right now I'm on Fedora KDE spin and I wish Plasma had customisable folders in Start menu. I don't like the predefined ones.

    • @9SMTM6
      @9SMTM6 3 месяца назад

      Huh. I thought it pulled these from the categories in the desktop file, but I checked, and it does not. VSCode is in 3 categories in my desktop file (/hsr/share/applications/code.desktop), 2 of which don't exist according to KDE.
      I did however find a way to edit the categories as KDE sees them. Right Klick in the start menu icon (the KDE icon unless your distribution changed that) and select edit applications.

    • @9SMTM6
      @9SMTM6 3 месяца назад

      It's a lot more effort than having folders. But the nice thing /reason I don't like folders, is that an application can have multiple categories, but it can only be in one folder (unless you create your own desktop files).

    • @cyangalaxy
      @cyangalaxy 3 месяца назад

      @@9SMTM6 I like the opposite. An app being only in one place (folder), and no where else.
      I like the GNOME (and Pop!OS) way. I drag app into folder, it's only in that folder. I have clear overview of my apps this way. I also easily see my new apps (as I haven't put them into a folder yet)
      I don't like the KDE way, having apps sorted into *multiple* categories and the "All apps" list being giant and messy. It's a bit confusing & annoys me, as I like having clear overview.

    I don't know, I have high hopes for Cosmic DE, but just because it is written from the bottom up in rust, but it doesn't convince me. Each indicator in the top bar is small and now I appreciate that in gnome-shell there is a unified system menu and above all that the action points in general are large and accessible. The overview or activity view in gnome-shell still seems superior to me, although I love the application drawer and the dialog to run applications as seen in Cosmic DE. The truth is that I would be happy if by default gnome-shell included a tiled window manager, which is the great feature that I envy of Cosmic DE (I already know that there are extensions, that's why I underline by default).

      @@mmstick Hi, I know, I've been building Cosmic DE for quite some time (although now I only use the Copr repository for fedora). Recommending making the panel larger is a clunky way to "resolve the issue" and I wouldn't use a panel larger than Cosmic DE currently defaults to or larger than gnome-shell's default. It also has problems with fractional scaling, LibO Impress presentations don't look good and when I try to change the keyboard brightness from the top panel menu the shell restarts and returns to default values. Just this morning, while trying a new update, the application box froze and remained on the screen above the rest of the windows and did not allow me to activate anything else. I had to force a reboot. It's frustrating, but I remain hopeful.

      Something similar already exists when you open the workspace view, either by a keyboard shortcut or by pressing one of the "numbers" that indicate the available workspaces in the left area of the top bar. You can see a bar with the available workspaces, the open application windows and the dock. It's similar at least, although gnome-shell's view of activities is superior.

      @@Tetex I mean, I kinda like the current overview on GNOME. It's one of the things that hooked me on Linux after transferring from Windows. Plus, the trackpad gestures are on point with it.

    • @ikeahloe
      @ikeahloe 3 месяца назад

      @@Tetex the overview in gnome before 40 was ideal. The idea of 1 key to accomplish your next thought between apps is the best paradigm shift in desktop computing. GNOME devs have ruined it over the years. but seeing the panel is important. say i'm in a game but want to quickly change a system tray thing, like adjust volume, etc. hit super and make the change. bam. want to change windows? hit super and change. want to open an app? hit super and type the first 2 characters. want to swithc you the workspace with your photo workflow happening between a gaming match? super and click. bam. it's the fastest workflow because it eliminates cognitive load of what multikey shortcut to use for what action to take between your focus in a particular app. Instead of thinking, you've already hit the super key and are more than halfway there when your brain catches up to your muscle memory. I'm hoping cosmic adds type to search launcher in the workspaces overview so we can have a single key workflow. it kind of does just using the launcher as super's default, since it lists windows, but it's much slower because you have to read through a list instead of just clicking based on your brains quick recognition of the look of the open app that you get with the workspaces overview.
