The Night Frank Sinatra Was Snubbed at The Grammy Awards
“Frank Sinatra made his last appearance at the Grammy Awards at the 36th Annual on March 1, 1994. He was 79 years old. He was to win the Grammy Legend Award presented to him by Bono, who had done a duet with him on a recent album.
Instead of showing the respect due to one of the greatest voices of the twentieth century, Sinatra was unceremoniously cut off as he was speaking.
As we are in the midst of the annual awards season, it always astounds me in the way that our great performers from the past generation are generally forgotten while the emphasis is placed on the new talent. I personally enjoy watching the appearance of the classic artists who are typically ignored.
Cutting off Frank became a controversy.
“Bono would strike a different tone in presenting Frank Sinatra with his Grammy Legend Award. Bono began his brilliant tone poem salute like this:
“Frank never did like rock and roll. He’s not crazy about guys wearing earrings either, but he doesn’t hold it against me and, anyway, the feeling is not mutual. Rock and roll people love Frank Sinatra because Frank Sinatra’s got what we want: swagger and attitude. He’s big on attitude, serious attitude, bad attitude. Frank’s Chairman of the Bad. Rock and roll plays at being tough, but this guy, well, he’s the Boss. The Boss of Bosses. The Man. The Big Bang of Pop. I’m not gonna mess with him, are you?”
Sinatra’s own comments would prove significantly more controversial. Sinatra - now approaching the age of 80 - was clearly moved by the huge standing ovation that he received - a reaction that seemed in the moment like a massive expression of respect and multigenerational reckoning. “Thank you very much,” he said when he finally spoke. “That’s the best welcome I ever had.” Sinatra’s comments from then on were a fascinating mix of vintage Rat Pack jokes (“This is more applause than Dean heard in his whole career”), personal thanks to his wife Barbara and even hurt feelings that he was not being asked to sing on this night. Yet for the record, even the aging Chairman’s rambling revealed singular phrasing.
Controversy ensued when Sinatra was cut off and the broadcast was taken to a commercial break before wrapping things up. Later The Academy let it be known that the decision had come from Sinatra’s camp, but the impression of disrespect had already been made. Even the Grammy host felt the need to distance himself on air from the decision, albeit with a memorable wink in the end. “Before I go on, I think you’d join me going on record that Mr. Sinatra should have finished his speech,” Garry Shandling told the audience. “I think that was a slight mistake. This is live television and I’m sure Mr. Sinatra will get even by cutting this show off in another hour.”

He was emotional not only from the great welcome he received but rather the speech that described him so perfectly. We love you Frank.
To this day I still can’t believe that they played Frank fkn Sinatra off the stage(in order to get to a commercial on time) as he was accepting a lifetime achievement award. It feels like an SNL skit. There are so many people in that audience and the rest of the music industry back and thank Frank Sinatra for what he did to pave the way for them. And they play him off the fkn stage??
Thank God for Billy Joel who made up for it after they came back from commercial by stopping in the middle of the song he was performing on stage just to piss them off. He looked at his watch and said.. “valuable advertising time going by… Dollars dollars dollars…“
One of the greatest moments in awards show history
Just read a book by Sinatra's manager. He called for the ad break as he was concerned that Sinatra might start embarrassing himself as he had a few too many drinks before going on stage to collect the award, which was unlike Frank. If Frank had ended up embarrassing himself on live TV, the professional in him would not have forgiven himself. It was a judgement call and Sinatra's manager was right to do so.
Bono was also drinking with Sinatra but thankfully he had his speech written out instead of trying to remember what to say.
Well done Bono you presented the award to Frank 4 years before he died.
I moved to Las Vegas in 1987 and saw Frank perform live many times. Even though he was older and couldn’t quite hit some notes he always dazzled with his stage person and charisma. I consider myself quite blessed to have seen him perform so many times. Always the best.
RIP Frank Sinatra (December 12, 1915 - May 14, 1998), aged 82
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Beautiful Irish poetry
One of the greatest introductions ever for one of the greatest artists ever!
Even at an old age, he still looks great, and his voice, dang
Yeah I love Bono
I miss 90s buzzed up Bono
I call this version of Bono the Arrogant Bono, post fly of course. But still pretty pompous 😂
@@jakez5227 Bono was at this point at the peak of his powers, the coolest, biggest rock star in the world; coming up from the greatest rock tour of all time (Zoo TV Tour) and one of the greatest albums ever (Achtung Baby), a Five Star classic, possibly the best record of the 1990s and still highly influential.
@@rebecalinares5393 my first album I ever purchased. Incredibly perfect in my opinion. I profoundly recall Bono accepting an award during this period when he said “U2 was made to fuckup the mainstream” live on television. My 11 year old self was so enamored with that man at that very point! I had never heard anyone cuss on live television and thought it was amazing 🤩😂
@@jakez5227 yeah Bono was using bad language during this period, insulting president of France during the MTV awards also after winning best international act 1995
He was the coolest rock star on the planet.

@@rebecalinares5393 omg you found it! I was in my early teens with Zoopora, I listened to it often. I also vividly remember Numb, and Hold me thrill me kiss me kill me being on MTV at that time. Thank you for bringing back the memories ❤️
Bono looks incredible and all the crowd is so elegant, those days are far behind.
An _amazing_ moment to see Frank so moved. I think Frank seemed fine, not in the throes of dimentia. Maybe a little buzzed after a few with Bono. Concerned that he might say something untoward, it was presumably Eliot Weisman, Frank's manager, who told the people running the show to go ahead to commercial. I don't judge him harshly at all, he was protecting his friend and client. Frank was getting a little slow by then, and combined with the drinks he and Bono had beforehand, well... you never know. So...
Anyway, I got to see Sinatra in concert three times. I'm very lucky to have been around when he was still active.
I don't recall who told it -- but this is _the_ single best story about Frank Sinatra that I ever heard. Perhaps it's even more about us loyal fans, and may explain why his manager made that request at the Grammies:
_In his later years, memory failing him a bit, Frank was performing live, and at one point was going to begin a song, and... forgot the lyric. He just drew in a breath, and drew a blank. As the old saying goes, you could have heard a pin drop._
_The orchestra went silent, the audience went silent, (hell, the whole universe froze!) This was beyond awkward. While the silence stretched, Frank paced back and forth across the stage, whispering in to the microphone over and over,_ "I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm sorry... " _
_Then someone in the audience stood up and yelled,_ "That's ok, Frank, we love you anyway!" _And immediately the entire audience stood and gave him a long, thunderous standing ovation._
_That moving moment revitalized him, and the orchestra launched into_ "The Best Is Yet To Come," _and Frank just nailed it perfect._
For me, it's an amazing story. I think it's a great story about courage, our human imperfections, loyalty, and maybe humanity's single greatest attribute, the very thing that makes us human -- empathy.
It's like he was saying goodbye
:( I know
Without Sinatra, many of them would not be there.....he put ‘ saloon singers on the map
True. Not the case of U2, though.
They where already there.
It was Sinatra who approached Bono.
Bono probably thought it was a blessing. He always does.
Hahaa not only that, theyre parents probably made love to his music 😂😂
First time seeing this since it aired in 1994. Frank was fading fast and knew it. He did a Duet with Bono of “I’ve got you under my skin” and an accompanying music video around this time. Thank you for posting!
Sinatra is kind and emotional man
The 90s were such a better time
Sinatra was the greatest interpretive artist of American popular music ever produced in our country. His body of recordings and concert appearances from the late thirties to the mid 90s is unprecedented in the entertainment industry.
I got choked up when he almost busted out into tears. He's no # 1 for me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🙏🇺🇸
#1 greatest introductory speech I've ever seen
I like alot of different kinds of music, heavy metal, classical , big band, metalica, ac/dc, oldies, soul, hip hop
and the list goes on.
But there's always time for Frank Sinatra's music 👍
Doesnt matter what type of music you like ,Everyone likes a Frank Sinatra song
he was so glamorous, he had very shiny hair.
Great intro Bono!
My wife and I saw him twice in Las Vegas in the late eighties at the Riviera and early nineties at the Desert Inn. The Greatest Of All Time and the TRUE
GOAT?
Bono did not mention that Frank was also a great humanitarian, and a fighter against racism.
@Antonio Macri Contrast a whole life.
@Antonio Macri Frank organized it.
So grateful that I was able to see him perform live. Don Rickles opened the show, needless to say it was hilarious. What an amazing life Mr. Sinatra had. One of the greatest. We don't have men like this anymore.
Sinatra - better than anything there's ever been or will be in the world of popular music. Fact.
Sinatra is the greatest.. What a life..Yes he was struggling at this point but he looked wonderful.
why do you say he was struggling?
@@dabneyoffermein595 because he was battling with memory loss and his health was declining
@@dabneyoffermein595he collapsed on stage that same year
They should have arranged for him to perform. Sounds like he would have loved to.
I'm sure he would have. They probably didn't see it that way, which is sad.
@@WildxFlowerThey cut him off when someone decided he was rambling. It was a very rude cut that everyone noticed. This edit doesn’t show how abrupt it was.
I remember this introduction growing up the hair on the back of my neck stood up, even hearing it again, when they cut to a commercial i was like 😱wtf Frank was the REAL DEAL
I wanted to just have a conversation with Frank but I was born too late. No money, no fame talk, just a conversation about little things.
me too, how cool that would be!
Yes, because if you'd been born earlier you'd have definitely had a conversation with Sinatra...right
Dude you know what I mean. Stop being so literal @@philipreid2542

So sad that frank never loved rock n roll, bur well... he was raised i a different world.. yo know franK? every single rock n roll head loves your music. ahahah we can deal with that.
well, he sang with elvis and with bono
Great intro...well deserved.
I’ll NEVER forget seeing this, all I could say at the end was ….WOW!
LA VOZ.....FOREVER
Miss the old days..when all great singers sitting in the same room salute the greatest singer...
Bono is a genius
Y salió con todo y cigarrett
This was the time period between zooropa and pop, Bono no pun intended was trying to be very edgy. He would often keep a five o’clock shadow and be smoking those cigarillos.
It's possible that when Frank said, "I'm angry; I'm (comedy NY accent) hoit," the geniuses at the console thought Frank had lost his mind and was going to have a tantrum, and made a quick decision to cut him off. They were unfamiliar with Frank; that was his humor. He said the exact same thing at the 1954 Academy Awards show, when he took home the Best Supporting Actor statue. The next day's headlines said Frank was confused, rambled, felt hurt, and so needed to be cut off. This is the type of thing that happens when the people in charge don't know much about whom they're dealing with.
Who ever cut him off should of been beaten and shot. How dare they cut off a legend. I am still angry
@@ivancarriel7210 Somebody thought s/he was protecting Frank from making a fool of himself. Probably not familiar with Frank's ring-a-ding-ding humor and timing. Unfortunate, I would have liked to hear the whole thing.
Didn't something similar happen with the great James Cagney ( Frank's idol) at the Night Of 100 Stars in 1982?
However in 1954 he did not say he was angry. He said I still love you guys.
Kudos to Billy Joel, though, for sticking it to CBS later in the evening. “Valuable advertising time going by…”
Tony Bennet in the audience… ooouuuuhhhh
Mr. Sinatra......Strictly the Best!
I love the Rat Pack
Finally the full video for the most part! Thank you!

Wonderful tribute & earnest.
Outstanding
Frank left his toupee to his best friend, Don Rickles. Don was buried wearing it.
I like to think of Frank playing with his trains in his basement, wearing his engineer’s hat.❤️
Frank getting emotional..my poor heart.
I would have left. Cutting off Sinatra? That’s crossing a line.
Caitlin, they saved him from embarrassing himself.
He starts to drift...His handlers most likely gave the cue to stop it.
2018 Irish Independent interview
He had reason recently to watch himself giving Frank Sinatra a Grammy legend award in 1994. His summing up of it is: "I walk on, sheets of paper, smoking a cigar at the Grammys…and it's just 'an obnoxious f*ck'."
I expect whenever Bono isn't performing, he's watching himself perform.
Dommage que e texte ne soit pas traduit en Français . Admiration totale. ❤ le meilleur.

I love you Frank 🙏🏻💋🍸 ♥️
Ol
Blue eyes...great speech
Nice speech bonoman
The call to cut to commercial was made by Sinatra's own management in the control room. Like most of America & the audience that day, I think it was a big mistake to cut off a living legend's goodbye to his fans & the world.
After this Bono made a legendary speech in the other room and said something about hormones and ended it with “free your ass and your mind will follow” 😂🤣
Not me crying when he started to tear up
The GOAT
Isn't this the one where they forced him to stop talking so they could roll the commercials

@@mysticedge4 -- yes, sinatra had a wig at this point, earlier in his life he wore toupee's that were glued on but he always hated them, but the good thing is that he had his own hair-dressers that did it all for him so he didn't have to fiddle with them. All his lovers had to be told where not to touch them I'm sure, just like Burt Reynolds. I remember the story of Bert Reynolds publicist saying that she would draw a picture of where NOT to touch Bert's hair while having sex with him (to all of his one night stands and other lovers). And one time, a women that he was groping with in a green room before an interview touched him in the wrong spot and Bert's hair-piece came off. Well that spooked her and she freaked out when she saw him bald and got away from him.
