Wow! The "noble aim" -- "the bread that people cannot live without." This misquotes scripture, but it touches something profoundly wonderful -- it uses language to point to something that words cannot easily describe directly. It scratches an itch in a non-physical place. Again, wow!
In the physical realm, Truth is *_never_* a destination, but a direction or vector. Thus, science always strives toward Truth, but never arrives. Some scientists shy away from any discussion of Truth, because they don't understand the true intent of science. They get bogged down in the flawed (biased) paradigm of skepticism. The true paradigm of discovery is "restraint and humility," because these accomplish the same things skepticism frequently fails to do, but without bias.

What if a reason for God's existence is that we do die?! Death saves us from worse pain and from the inevitable infinite pain of eternal life. Heaven is perhaps believed to be an unfathomable bliss to the human mind. But if it is unfathomable how do we know it exists?! We can only experience heaven from man's living realty. Eternal life would inevitably mean infinite pain!
I say it’s not that righteous. Another way of getting through life for a man is to engage so deeply in something, that your ego - the unavoidable fiction of, and fixation with, “I” - disappears. At least for a time. But where’s this “it has to be noble” coming from? It has to be altruistic, maybe? Well sure - if altruism helps you forget the inevitable, chronic suffering of “I”. But if it’s something else? Something selfish like art? Or professoring? Nothing “noble” about those. When did Peterson palm this “noble” and slip it into the lecture? And it’d been so nice and consistent up till then!
I've always assumed that he means the individual considers the goal to be noble. Altruism would certainly qualify for most people, but others might find greater meaning elsewhere.
It has to be noble to the individual holding it as a goal. If one is building their sense of value upon the achievement of a goal, if that individual knows the goal to be ignoble, that implies that individual is also ignoble. The logical course for that ignoble-goal oriented person is suicide.
Jordan Peterson hates himself some times. He cringes at the thought of his own existence, which he considers to be wretched. I'm not that complicated. I just eat nachos and drink beer.

Sure they do! The TRUTH irritates them. And GOD drives them nuts!
