Sometimes I wonder about Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima's race, like someone outside the race interfered, pushed him out and very likely cost him the gold, how do you compensate for that? You can't really have them do a redo since its a freakin Marathon. I'm glad he doesn't seem to see it that way, he powered through, happily accepted the bronze and he eventually got to light the cauldron in the 2016 Olympics. For him, he said the medal is a bronze but it's gold to him. But at the same time, you kinda can't help but wonder how the story would've played out had he not been tackled by an outsider...
I wonder that too. But at the same time I feel that this experience made more of an impact on the world than if he HAD won a gold medal. It would have been nice if he had won, but this actually made him MORE than a winner; It made him a legend. An idol. The reason this story resonates with all of us is because everyone has idiots who interfere in their "race of life". Everyone has nay-sayers or just plain jerks who want to see them fail. Vanderlei taught us that if we press forward and make it to the end of our "race" with good grace, then we are all winners of life.

he did get awarded the pierre de coubertin medal for outstanding sportsmanship. only 20 ish people have ever been awarded that.

Before even watching this I knew Kerri Strugg would be on here. I remember watching that with my parents and just being in awe at the willpower of that young woman. Inspiring.
Ya know who should been in there?Yuzuru Hanyu. That dude got rammed into during a warm up and was bleeding from his head and chin, I heard it was a rather major head injury, yet he went out on the ice and did his routine. He fell 5 times and kept getting up, even though it was harder to do so the more he fell. He completed his routine and could barely skate out of the arena, let alone walk. Anf he still won a silver medal in figure skating.

@@ellinoora7021 I think, when he was skating at the 2018 Olys, he had some ankle injury that was still healing and he skated on painkillers that day. I almost didn't believe it when I found out, you could see no sign on pain.

Knowing later what actually she had to endure thru, I can't imagine how she got thru all those hours of physical strain. And she won bronze. This is the greatest feat in all of Olympics, I say.

2016 artistic gymnast Andreas Toba from Germany tore his ACL during his floor routine. He asked it to be taped up tightly to stabilize his knee and went on to perform on the pommel horse to score the points his team needed to advance to the final. He even stood the landing and was helped off the apparatus by his teammates. Instead of returning home immediately like the doctors adviced, he stayed with his team.
In Germany Andreas Toba was celebrated like a hero for his outstanding team spirit and was given at least the same amount of attention horizontal bar gold medalist Fabian Hambüchen had gotten. Toba didn't win a medal, but he won our hearts.

I have ruptured my ACL twice, it's mainly used as the ligament in the knee for pivoting - so after the initial pain, it quickly swells and stops hurting -assuming you haven't injured anything else. Continuing to perform in a high pivot intensity sport with a torn ACL is super risky, not just for further pain, but for the chance to injure other parts of the knee.
I basically has blow up my muscles at the leg and I didn't feel anything . This happen when I playing softball and then I realize my leg starting to blue 1 month in the hospital . Tough enough

as someone studying medicine. while i admire them for their determination, i feel like some of them are stubborn and actually injured themselves more
It is a shame that you completely forgot about the Japanese gymnast Shun Fujimoto, who in 1976 in Montreal broke his knee in the floor exercises but continued competing with a broken knee in the pommel horse and especially the rings when he had to land from a great height on his feet, to help his team win gold. I remember the British commentator describing him as either very brave or very foolish.

I would say many of these cross the line between determination and stupidity.

The ‘72 Olympic basketball final was a fix by a British official who was in the stands spectating. He was not there in an officiating capacity, yet he put his two cents in and acted as if he had a say in the matter. Soviets can thank a Brit for their gold medals.
