This was more about being a real FATHER, than running in the Olympics.
Well said!
That was so inspirational. I cried just imagining the pain he felt on his heart in that moment.
Yes 😢 I luv this 💪🏽
Imagine the pain he felt on his leg 😂
P
This would have gone "viral" if it happened today.
tlig he sent his sister in to early labor from doing that lmao
It was in my country
tlig father for sure
It went viral went it happened. Viral-ness was still a thing back then, it was just different. This certainly played on news channels around the world and was in newspapers
It did go viral. There are many other channels who cover this story. That's why the official olympics channel doesn't have that many views
Still to this day one of the best displays of the Olympic spirit.
It makes me so happy to see a father that would help his son even if he didn’t win, when there are so many parents that wouldn’t have done that.
I strongly believe You're wrong
@@hairyputter5363 unfortunately, they didn't lie
Any outside help means disqualification. But father and son ignored this for the sake of sportsmanship.
@@edgardolim9953 I mean, at that point he had no chance of advancing anyway, so getting disqualified wouldn’t have meant much.
@@ohno3464 yup. It was just emotional and inspiring to keep pushing to cross that line no matter what! A torn hamstring is painful as heck but that wasn’t the point in that moment for him. The crowd cheering him on and supporting him along with his father pushing past to him was amazing to see!
Hold up, we just gonna gloss over the fact his sister went into labor by watching this?
Luis Prado lmao da fuq
Yep and she wasn’t even pregnant!
I started laughing so hard
@@Fullloafofbread I went from teary eyed to laughing after I read this comment😂😂😂
Actually no, it was covered fairly clearly in the video. Thanks though.
Rename the Video from Strangest Moments to Strongest Moments.
yeah
Facts! This was painful and beautiful all at once!
I watched this live. It was... amazing. One day his dad will pass away but in the most important time in his life he was there. As my father has been for me... many, many times.
Go dad's!
Long life to all the dad's.
GO DADS
Lets Go!
Today was the day his Dad passed away at age 81 . RIP Jim Redmond 😔
He passed away today 😔
Who got tears?
Spiritual Monk mee
Me too
me ME me ME me me
Nah, it's just been raining on my face.
Me 😭
When his Dad ran to him I cried hard, this was a beautiful story.
i shed tears every time i see this story...gets me every time..
marcie ortiz me too ☺️
Me too.
I love how they had to technically record him as “did not finish race”. Man.....this is the purest definition of finishing the race.
May 6th, 2017 I was running my high schools final home meet. I was a 400m sprinter who also ran the 200m. I knew my hamstring was sore but I had a heavy load that season. I was ranked 6th in Maryland 2A for the 400m so the 200m was easy. I had my best start ever and was running against my relay partner Bryce for the first place finish. Around the bend, I felt the pop. You think you got shot when it happens. Every year our coach showed us the original footage of this race. I got up off the track and hopped my way to the finish line. Three hours ago I was introduced as a state contender to a roaring home crowd. I finished the night laying on the track yelling “it’s torn it’s torn it’s torn.” I watch this video every year to remind myself to finish strong.
That’s a beautiful father, right there 😭😭😭🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
When the moment was so emotional it made somone give birth
Truely beautiful.
Amazing moment. I was actually sitting about four rows away from his dad on the turn to the homestretch at the stadium that day. When we saw dad heading down the isle, climbing over the rail and onto the track we knew right away this moment would go down in history as a true meaning of the Olympic Games.
YOU SAW THIS LIVE!
@@Haris-bw2rq Yes I did. It was a powerful moment
Must have been wonderful to have seen such a beautiful display from Derek and Dad.
So emotional 😭
Props to him even being able to walk after a hamstring tear. I tore mine when I was 13 and nearly passed out from hyperventilation and the pain. It felt like something had popped out of place while being stabbed, with pain shooting up the left side of my body. Was on crutches for two weeks before I could walk unassisted again, with another six weeks healing before I was even allowed to think about going back to ballet. That kinda injury is no joke so this hit me right in the feels.
Same age as me when I tore mine doing longjump. Dropped like I had been shot lol
Daymmmmmmmmmnnn broooo You make me cryy all over again! When I am down I always watch this vid and get inspiration to you. God Bless you always
Mee too
This is why i love sports
Every single time this pops up as a video to watch especially because it’s almost time for the next Olympics I cry. When you see athletes going back to help someone I’m a goner. It gives me chills to see athletes like this man and others trying so hard. When his dad pushes his way to his son.....the water works start.
Met him years ago, I was stood chatting to him for about 5 minutes, had the feeling I knew him from somewhere, took about 3 minutes to finally realise which it was lol. Real nice bloke though
Inspiring. He still 'won' even if it wasn't in the form of a medal
I never cry, even at funerals of loved ones, but watching him finish that race despite the extreme agony had me balling my eyes out like a baby. What a powerful and inspirational ending
You and me both
This account will never grow old; what a beautiful man with a wonderful legacy. Where is Derek today, 2020? He is the true spirit of the Olympics and to think--he crossed the finish line with the help of his Father! Exactly what Christians are to do, from faith to faith!
I salute this great man sports spirit..
A true father right there. Keeping a promise to his son to always be there for him no matter what.
He might not have won but he won by finishing it
He also won many people's hearts
You really makes me cry but u inspire me to fight my battles now...I salute u...
You show Perseverance to finished the race...God bless u and ur family
What countries can achieve together is the true Olympic spirit. What the athletes achieve is truly amazing.
"Derek missed out on Seoul 1988 by mere minutes". In a 400m race I think that even I could miss qualifying by a few minutes.
I think she meant he was late to the start.
I think he got injured just minutes before the race
I think he missed the Seoul qualification time by one second, not by one minute
he got injured 10 minutes before the race
Exactly, was about to write similar!
Derek....gold medal for u hero ✊✊✊
I'M CRYING
No matter how many times I see this, I cry.
3:48 Derek refused to go oussh wishoush a faessh
Lol
Ikr wth was that
RIP Jim Redmond, who died today aged 81
I watched it live back in 92 and bust into tears when this happened. It was and is the most beautiful Olympic moment I have seen.
That last line you don't have to be a gold medalist to be an Olympic hero ❤💪💯🙏
I always cry when I watch his perfoemance and the love that his father have for him
No matter how many times I see this race I still get emotional
I will never forget that moment as I watched the event from home. It was very inspiring, motivating, emotional and glorious. Just beautiful to see the father AND son crossing the finish line together. FATHERS, WAKE UP. YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS NEED YOUR SUPPORT IN EVERY WAY IN ORDER TO COMPETE SUCCESSFULLY IN LIFE. DON'T BAIL ON YOUR CHILDREN.
This was so emotional to watch 😢😭😭 father will always be a father no matter what, it would hurt them to see the child in so much pain.
The first time i watched this brought me to tears. But watching this now as a dad, this brought me to another level of tears.
He belongs to the list of heroes! I was in the pub when I saw it! And we all scream fight! Fight, the fellowship and the good felling was so good that we thought he wan the gold!💯💖
what a beautiful and glorious moment. that's what it's all about people. God bless them both
The most touching moment in all of sports history. Fathers standing in the gap for their children.
jim was actually one of the torch bearers at 2012 olympics, hes a really great guy
I cry every time I watch this. The act of him not giving up inspires people. I salute you Derek.
He finished faster than me running 400m at full speed.
"It's not how you starsh, it´s how you finish"
...
Seeing this replay gave me as many tears as seeing it then. Your narration is perfect.
I don't know how I got here! But......this got me in tears 😭😭😭😭😭
RIP Jim Redmond, Derek's father and hero.
Wow!! This brought tears to my eyes.
I remember this it had my mom and I in tears and on our feet.
I have tears streaming down my face. One went down to my collar bone.
Omg, cried.
Watching this in 2021......awesome spirit.
This is an incredible story for everyone to remember!
I've never cried since 2013, omg!

Yes it is true Olympic spirit❤
He came to my school
If was amazing and I cried
Goosebumps
I am all tears, this is emotional and powerful. I'll be doing the 94.7 cycling challenge race (97km) for the first time this year, I am 48. Will be watching this for motivation. Planning to finish within 5hours and worst case the 6 hour cutoff time.
This made me cry.
This is the most beautiful thing 😭❤️❤️
A real father. We should be there for our children no matter what.
Wow! I remember this. It was so heartwarming.
Dad level 100+

And that’s the Olympics for ya! Brings me to the time I saw Mao Asada skate in the Winter Olympics 2018. She knew she wasn’t going to win following the short program at 16th place. But she skated so beautifully to the very end.
Just had this yesterday, very painfull.
Guerreiro de alma e coração ❤.
Such true, Derek Redmond you didn't win any medal in the race but you ve become people champions, all around the world eternally
He win the heart of millions.
The true purpose of life is to inspire. The remarkable behvaiour leaving the trail of true human spirit for years to come. For me this man and his father is the real winner.
So proud of u, Derek🥺🥺🥺😭😭😭
It's not how you start the race, it's how you finished it. And it's moments like this that we'll always remember in life. Winning is a bonus...
Now that is a true athlete.
Still so hard to watch 29 years later
So cute❤️
I remember this too well
Its 4am and I am crying.
I remember when they showed us this in my old Primary School. It really shows how people really care.
Me conmovió hasta las lágrimas: "Lo más importante no es ganar es competir" ✔
" Navegar é preciso, viver não é preciso" ☀️
