Doing a series of especially Blasian stars would be awesome, hearing how it was for them coming up in the industry. Would love a Tasha interview, its well recorded how much she went through back in the late 90's even at the hands of the Korean Government. She needs to be recognized more as the original and first lady of Hip Hop and R&B in Korea, she is the blueprint but also original and never to be duplicated.
Crystal Kay was so important to me as a blasian kid I was lucky to find her album over 20 years ago thrifting in Amsterdam back then nobody was really into Japanese or Korean stuff (I used to blind buy Cd albums stuff from yesasia back then haha) I was really lucky finding her album so randomly artists like her and Yoon Mirea/Tasha made me so happy as I saw other blasian people in a pop culture I was into and there weren’t that many other blasians doing their thing. When it comes to representation of diversity this is such a better time for a lot of people and I hope it will get even better in the future!
Omg how did you get this interview?! She’s literally an icon in Japan and was the pioneer for mixed race acts period. I love how down to earth she continues to be considering what she did for the Japanese music industry at such a young age. We love you Crystal. Her new single called Love Yourself is a whole bop too!!!
That's not true. She's well known, and I really like her, but she's not an icon nor a pioneer for biracial performers in Japan. There have been plenty of biracial performers in the entertainment industry, even way back in the Showa era.
@@TheAerialgreen You say not an icon or a pioneer, as though there can only be one in music history? It's a strange and negative take to have. When it comes to 2000s j-pop and r&b, and Black people singing in Japan Crystal is absolutely an icon and one of the most well known impactful artists.
@@TheAerialgreen if that’s the case, name them. Other than Crystal Kay, I can’t think of anybody else, let alone anyone who’d be deemed as iconic as a biracial artist in Japan.
Crystal is so right about Japan being self-sufficient and not as hungry for global success, which is valid, but at the same time Japan / J-pop has so many talented artists and art forms that I believe deserve worldwide recognition!! I recently got into Psychic Fever from Exile Tribe because they went viral on TikTok. They also have a half Nigerian member and half moroccan/korean member who definitely would be popular in the west.
I thought for a long time that Japan has so many top-tier artists as good as Korea that the rest of the world should know about but yea I've also heard that Japan makes already a lot of profit from their own people so they don't necessarily need to go global I also think there is more diversity in Japanese mainstream in both genres and more people of other races without changing their natural looks
Agreed, most artists that people know come from anime. Thankfully, I got introduced to Creepy Nuts, Ado, and more, which got me into their music. I wish people knew more about them. I learned about One Ok in high school, listening to a shuffle music playlist on RUclips. Also, same with Psychic Fever.
@@moglom93 Plus Japanese corporations ACTIVELY struck down stuff on RUclips for years and years, especially Avex. So it was very hard for international fandoms to get into it and spread it around like K-pop did.
I am Japanese and have been living in the United States since I was 15 years old. I can relate so much to what Crystal mentioned. If I hadn’t come to the U.S., I don’t think I would have realized how important it is for everyone to have self-confidence and maintain a positive mindset. Living here, I can’t remain the typical quiet Japanese person. I truly wish that in Japan, people were taught to be more confident and to embrace who they are. It’s okay to acknowledge your strengths and proudly say, ‘I’m good at this.’ Since becoming a mother, I’ve come to realize how much this attitude can impact children. In Japanese culture, when someone gives you a compliment, it’s common to deny it. For instance, if someone says, ‘You’re so cute,’ the typical response would be, ‘No, I’m not.’ In contrast, I was surprised to see how often parents in the U.S. openly compliment children. When children constantly hear this kind of self-denial, it can lead them to develop negative feelings about themselves, like thinking they’re not good enough, which undermines their confidence. I believe there are many wonderful aspects of Japanese culture, but I really wish we could adopt this aspect of American culture, where self-affirmation and confidence are encouraged.
This interview brings me soooooo much joy! From the very start, you both do an amazing job contextualizing Crystal Kay's success and the unique experience of growing up in the South while finding representation through a budding platform like RUclips. As someone from Alabama who often felt like an outsider but found solace in J-pop, Crystal Kay's music resonated deeply with me. I fell in love with her voice through Fullmetal Alchemist's ending theme, "Motherland," and seeing this interview brings back all the nostalgia. It’s incredible how something that once felt so niche is now normalized, yet the emotions still hit the same. Thank you for this gem!
I loved hearing this interview!!! I am Korean and black as well and learned about her wayyyyyyy back in the day and always wondered about her story but never found many interviews with her. Thank you for taking the time to spotlight her life and work!!! 🙏🏾

CKay is one of my favorite JPop artists. She along with Hikaru Utada and Jero was a big inspiration for me to start singing in Japanese. Crystal Kay is one of my favorite Asian Singers....I've followed her career since I discovered her on Pop Japan TV back in 2004. We have a Japanese Event called JapanFest that happens every year here in Atlanta Georgia and I go every year hoping that she would be there 😢
I been a fan of Crystal Kay's since the early 2000s.
I totally listened to her while learning Japanese. The language didn't stick but the songs did!
I love Crystal Kay!
i remember Crystal and her Kinnick crew when I was doing security for Odoriya and all the parties way back in the yokosuka days , knew her father , great musician also , big ups Crystal
Avril Lavigne is our Canadian homegirl who has been an "inspiration in Japan" (Get it?! ANA callback!)
for so many female Jpop idols. I hope she realizes that. And I hope these two have seen the Kim family
version of APT! Jong-Un and his crazy sister rocking out! Better watch out Bruno and Rose!
The QUEEN!!!!!
Why does Wikipedia wrongly list this person as 38 years old?
As a long time fan of JPop , its nice to see someone who kinda looks like me doing big things in the JPOP scene
I love her!!! One of my fav singers of all time ❤❤❤
