Inside Deftones' 'Around the Fur': Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter on Game-Changing Album

- White Pony may have been the Deftones' commercial high point and most critically acclaimed release, but its predecessor, 1997's Around the Fur, was their creative turning point when the band really found itself and the full range of its expansive, expressive sound. In the first episode of Revolver's new "Game Changers" series, singer Chino Moreno and guitarist Stephen Carpenter look back at the defiant creative spirit, late-night parties and last-second studio improvisations that led to some of their most timeless music.

Be Quiet and Drive
God, that song was just perfect.
My favorite track on the album!!!!
Nostalgic Maggot still is
There's perfection on every album. I've never experienced full-on emotion until my first DEFTONES experience.
Yes! Every time I come back to that album, though, I find myself appreciating a single song more than the others and then it changes and then changes again. Only a few albums have been like that for me.
It was beyond perfect
Chino is low key scared remembering how angry he used to be and how that made its way into the record. My personal favorite deftone album. I have the CD in my car at all times
The Deftones are the reason I picked up a guitar.
Me too, a few months ago. I already play most songs from around the fur.
Except its DEFTONES, theres no THE
Same shoutout to Stef dog and elite
@@fuckthepolice.9410 K den, acab Emily
SAME if it wasn’t for deftones i wouldn’t have learned guitar
This album was the soundtrack of my teenage years, and I still love it. I didn’t go anywhere without this album. I had to buy it three times because it was stolen twice.
Same here, bud. Same here.
In 97-98 this was IT for me. The first time I bought Around the Fur was on cassette. I had a boom box, a skateboard, and a fucked up haircut and I was out of control. Adrenaline was a great album but when this came out it was all over for me. For at least two summers this was probably the only album I listened to.
The thieves had good taste at least. But yea, this was the soundtrack for my hs years from 97-01.
Me to y'all
Dude lame but good taste
Stephen Carpenter does not age through out the years!
Rocky Austin must be the weed lol
Physically or mentally unfortunately for him.. he's still like a 14 year old who thinks smoking is cool
@@richardwellend3806boooooo! buzz kill 👎
Man deftones changed my life got me through a long bout of teenage angst-filled depression
Grant Barrett same man
Teenage angst has paid off now I'm bored and old...
To me that’s their best record. “Lotion” is my life!!
I saw them at the beginning of the Around The Fur Tour in '97.They opened with "Lotion".. Hands down the best show I've ever seen still to this day.
I sang "seven words" into the mic with chino... it was life changing.. lol
Infinite agreement to that statement. Best record, Best song
Lotion literally changed my life
Alex Taramona I agree
Couldn’t agree more.
Its BY FAR the best one.
This album changed everything for me.
Was so lucky to see them on this tour.
Chino backflipped off the speaker stack onto me. That night is still one of the best nights of my life. Nottingham Rock City February 1998.
That whole album is amazing... Dai the Flu with that just grungy grindy bass is my personal fav...
ahmen brother
You give the flu
Dai the Flu is massively slept on
That's my favorite deftones song.
hell yeah, best song on the record
Some SERIOUSLY iconic images of the band from that time. Love it.
Chino looks like he's really intelligent and cool dude to have a profound conversation. Love deftones!
A deftones dvd/bluray is long overdue. Great video btw.
Andres Mejia I have screamed this for years!!!!!!
DAMONE!! The “secret” song was GOAT!!
Seriously one of my faves ever
Deftones and Tool man, the two best bands of all time for me!
They are my Led Zeppelin and The Beatles.
Equalized I can relate to that
Are they your Beatles or Zeppelin?
dreamrealitysyndrome you know I thought about that a lot and I think that the zeppelin influence on Tool is just too strong and the parallel of 4 ultra talents combined. Leaving deftones with the writing duo of stef and chino to Beatles Paul and John
Straight up how I feel
Tool and Deftones are my top 1 and 2 as well, damn small world
I love how passionate they still are over 25 years into their careers
Their best record no question.
Dylan Caldwell white pony says otherwise
and to me, they’re 1A and 1B
ThaTruth223 I care about the music not record sales. Still another amazing Deftones record just not my favorite
Dylan Caldwell i wasn’t going by record sales though, because nowhere in my comment did i say anything of the sort
ThaTruth223 White Pony is the standard answer for the popular. I like adrenaline better than White Pony but like I said. Still a good album just not “MY” favorite.
i was just responding to the no question, not attacking your personal preference.
I was ten years old when I heard for the first time their song Be Quiet and Drive, and even I didn't understand English at that age it was a huge impact. I love this band with all my heart.
Around The Fur is a gem ! Listen to it everyday man
Dylan Holland same
MX my favorite song
This is soooo strong. Whoever disliked this is a sucker.
Johnathan Shankovich
They are suckers, man. You know it, I know it. We fkn know.
omg no matter the video theres always some fucktard that dislikes
Truly
Haha Absolutely!
My first Deftones album. Every song still hits me and reminds me of my youth in a way almost nothing else can. My Own Summer got me to buy the album and that song still does weird things to my soul every single time I hear it.. those first two drum beats.. that riff.. that vibe.. Dammit man.
rebecca Poston RAW EMOTION NEVER AGES 💯🙏
This album was my introduction to Deftones back in the mid to late 90s when I was in jr high or high school. Glad I got to see them live before Chi had his accident. RIP Chi
Man I love bands where every single member does their individual contribute the best. Deftones is just that type of band. Nobody does their individual style better than Abe, Chi, Chino, Carpenter. Together it becomes epic.
Stephen Carpenter is so cool; his guitar playing is so smooth
Here is an interesting fact. A few months after ATF was released, reports came back to the Maverick label that Deftones - Around The Fur CD was the #1 CD that kids were stealing from record stores. I informed Chino about this & after a good laugh, we were like, as long as the music is getting out to the fans which the music was actually created for!! Such a great & positive response from an even better all around person.
wtf why is chino so hilarious and fuckin adorable.
Best fucking band in the world.
Around the fur has always been my favorite album.
It's the best album. I was 17 got the album and saw them in London
This is the album that got me into them. Teething was the first song I heard but Around The Fur was the record I jammed religiously, pissing my parents off.
R.I.P. Chi.
Hes right, the drum sound on AtF is outstanding and instantly recognizable.
Best record hands down, though i gotta add, white pony changed the game. The pinnacle of creative evolution.
Immadoya Real Good white pony was beyond...best album of my own personal summer post graduation
My Own Summer is a perfect song to me. Every time I listen to it it's like I'm hearing it for the first time all over again.
Around the fur & Adrenaline are their best albums! Absolutely love them both to death! Every time I hear a song from those albums I feel 17 again, angry, emotional, and adrenaline pumping; ready to take on the whole world! \m/ \m/
Be Quiet and Drive might be their best song.
Fuck I love Deftones. Such a beautiful sound.
More of this, please.
I’ve always loved sextape, that song is so amazing
I love Deftones...every bit of them.
Still don't know what Chino says in the verses of "Labia".... and I wouldn't have it any other way.
And still love this record twenty years later.
Somewhere, outside
There are tricks and evil
Holler downstairs
While I drive
I want to watch you buttercup
Coming through the fog
The album is a masterpiece and I don't think a week goes by without there being at least one day of me listening to it back to back for like 6 times in a row. Not an overstatement.
This cd got me through so much shit as a kid.
Love the sudden Deftones spam!
I'm so glad I was a teenager in the 90s.
These guys seem like really good genuine dudes.
This album just reminds me of summer... I listened to this album all summer the best summer of my life.... one of my favorite albums still
Around the fur kicked you right in the head. What a bad ass album it is!!!
Chino is one of my all-time favorite singers. This band is absolutely incredible and has aged like a fine wine. I don’t think “God, I can’t believe I used to actually listen to the Deftones.” They took the next steps as a band instead of just trying to make music that would be popular in the moment.
Around the Fur is the soundtrack to my teen years. I’m now almost forty. Seeing and hearing this takes me back there in my head momentarily. Great times. Prime of my life as Chino said.
One of my all time favorite albums of all time
My favorite album ever made by anyone, thank god I get to enjoy it in my lifetime ❤
HELL YES
All time favorite album!
Wish this was at least a half an hour special. Great stuff.
What an amazing record so soft and beautiful and brutal and heavy at the same time!🤘🏻
And I love the hidden track. Never knew the name but it is badass!
I think it’s Damone, but it’s definitely underrated
Def top 5 all times records right here, life-changing to say the least, front to back every track hits now like it did back in 97, much love fam
Around the fur is their best song. I wish they would go back to that level of intensity.
One of the all time best albums ever made.
I could've kept watching more. Glad this was in my recommended.
my 111th like is very appropriate ....im Andre Warmsley and ive been a fan since 95- 96 era Adrenaline came out on m birthday Oct.3RD 1995 good times....thanks revolver
111 a.m west coast
This album was the soundtrack to a whole season of snowboarding to me. I play it now and can still feel the wind. Its a timeless record.
This was the album of my teenage angst back in the mid 90’s so happy I’ve seen these guys twice live even today rockin’ out to White Pony.
“Dai the flu” is my life
Out of all the albums that I have collected throughout the years, Around The Fur gets heavy play still.
To me, Around The Fur is Deftones at their all time best. This record resonates the most angry, lustful and nostalgic vibe just by listening to it. This album broke them off from being “nu metal” and boosted them off to the standards they have held for years.
Underrated band
underrated?? one of the best to do it.. and everybody knows it..
@@jgc_dosdiez not everybody unfortunately
Yep
The Comedian Fuck no Bro. Everybody that know about Rock fuckin jocks Deftones!
How? You the type of guys making the "underrated" comments...just stop it
Favorite band ever! I've seen these guys live every album since Adrenaline. 🤘🏻
Every time I see him, I have to salute Chi, RIP you glorious person.
I got sooooo lost in this album when it came out. Absolute metal masterpiece.
Metal?
By far my favorite deftones album!
Best record by the Deftones! One of my favorite albums of all time.
One of the most complete albums of all time.
You guys have never let me down live, either...🤘🤘
Deftones for life!!! RIP Chi
Favorite album from my favorite band since high school! Looking forward to growing hella old and still rockin' out to music from these vatos! #OneLoveForChi
RIP
No question...Deftones at their best. And that's amazing because they're always at their best.
Around the fur and white pony are by far my favs awesome albums through and through really love what chino said about around the fair being a splitting off point for the band making something all their own
It’s incredibly heavy
My favorite Deftones album and some of the best times of my life. Thank you guys.
Classic album! Thank you for all the great music 🎶
I love this band, their records are the sound track to my early adulthood. I still till this day rock these albums like it's the 1st time I'm hearing them. It never gets old.
I was in my mid to late 20s and playing in a rap core band at the same time . I would use a lot of Abe's style drumming . To this date I still have a lot of his style in me lol. Definitely a lot of memories to this album . The good ol days
@@bruceowens7213 I've been a fan since the 90's lol. It was definitely the start of my love affair for this band. There was only a handful of my friends that discovered their unique sound during my H.S years. If you were a passenger in my car back then and still till this day, you will jam out to them with me.
My favorite band of all time since i was a little Kid. Great fucking album
First record I've heard by them and still my favorite
Thank you for making this.
this album is outstanding, my favorite is around the fur. so incredible from beginning to end, thank you so much.
Still jam that shit 20 years later
Adrenaline was then first deftones piece and it blew my mind made me bigger played all those songs innguitar and taught me how to make my own songs . Love unconditional a big part of my life ? Thank u deftones !
God I love you guys forever and ever. I have 4 of your records on CD, including B Sides & Rarities.... Deftones were such an essential part of my childhood. thank you for making brilliant and intense music!
So so good... learned the entire thing on the drums like it was on the back of my hand. Still love it to this day!!
Im 16 and the fact that chino was only 23 when he made one of the best albums ever gives me so much hope lol
right friends right time. favorite band bar none
Got to se them in Petaluma California back in those days, what a time!!!
Truely amazing record. Nice vid
Deftones are my Life ❤️. Since Day 1 so fantastic from front to Back.
What a great video! Great record as well. DEFTONES! 🤘
Around the Fur, is my favorite CD, by far. Love it! I saw these guys, just outside of Pittsburgh, in a ice-skating rink. Very intimate show.
That was great. First two albums. Insane
i appreciate this video sooooo much, album of my life...and stephens explanation of how he wrote my fav song 'my own summer', just hit waaaay to close to home lol
This is amazing
One of the Gratest bands of all time from the first day! And a little bit underrated... Music industry was dying at the moment, and all the alternative scene became so weak with the end of traditional MTV. But I feel proud for my dudes, Deftones was my favorite band for a very long period of time!!!
Love these guys in life and in music
