  • At two kilometres wide, the crater of Nyiragongo volcano is one of the world’s largest. Half a kilometre down is an active lava lake with temperatures reaching 1200 degrees Celsius.
Why would anyone want to travel thousands of kilometres to climb into the crater to get as close as possible to boiling liquid rock? Because it’s there....
I was one of the leads on this trip with Dangerman Geoff Mackley’s Ultimate Volcano Expeditions to the Democratic Republic of Congo and escorted another adventurer down nearly 500 metres over three terraces to the lava lake, an abseil I did twice on this trip.
Filmed on a Canon 5dmlll in 2016. Edited on iPad Pro using Adobe Rush.
