This is the best lesson on diminished harmony I have seen in decades not by Barry Harris. That is no small achievement sir. Big kudos to you for making this subject guitarible. Definitely got my sub. Respect.
Learning to link harmonic and melodic minor seamlessly into Majory harmony has been my mission this summer. I can tell you what I've learned. I've learned that I'm gonna need more than a summer... I still sound like I'm jumping between instead of sounding as a coherent blended combination. Sometimes I just feel like it will never come to me. Maybe i need to quit playing and start listening more... for someone who loves to play nonstop, I don't enjoy listening like i feel i should.
Your way of describing a chord progression with vivid scenarios helped so much with understanding the harmonic function of each chord within a key. Thank you

This is an amazing vid that demystified a ton of stuff for me. I’m right at the level where I can get around major//minor//dominant ideas but diminished chords have been this alien concept. You’re a really good educator!
All of your videos are REALLY funny, but I'm seriously sitting here laughing my ass off!! And this IS be the best explanation of chords and function that I've ever heard, even beyond the guitar. So, THANK YOU!!
This was literally year 1 in my college...but you only get in,if you already absolved an instrument at the conservatory first, so I guess it is different due to that. Great video. Great teaching.
This guitar went a little out of tune in a few places, but since it's a Gibson it's nothing to write home about ;) But seriously: your lessons are pure gold
That first 20 seconds really sums up my experience with diminished. It sounds great, but I just gotta use the arpeggio shape when I wanna use that sound, instead of hearing it naturally and shifting in and out at will. Thanks for the help, Dani.
Seems like the second inversion diminished is the most versatile. It can lead to the first or second inversion of the target chord: Bdim7/F - C/E or C/G or the relative minor: G#dim7/D - Ami/C or Ami/E
Nice video, thanks! I’m pretty sure this was covered by my third or fourth semester at Berklee back in the 1980s (from what I can make of my scant notes). Maybe it depends on certain variables (I was a jazz arranging and composition major) but covering diminished chord functionality in the last year seems a bit late in the game, no?
Ok...okk...I had a momentary lapse of clarity but then I doubt myself! Oh, the joys of being self-taught! You never know when to trust the teacher. If I just add a b2 to the harmonic minor scale then I can enclose the tonic with a diminished and a dominant.... even if just for fun!😂 then i realize that isn't right...... wait...yes it is 🥨
Ha! No wonder I've been twisting my brain into a pretzel!! I've been doing all this practice with °7 chords instead of a diminished triad.... i was dealing with far too many options for my current feeble understanding😂
Thank you for the comprehensive lesson! I don't quite understand how F sharp diminished is a Csus chord. F sharp diminished has E flat, F sharp, and A, and I don't understand how they relate. Are you referring to a sus4 chord? I've enjoyed your guy's music for a long time and thank you again for the teaching.
You left out the part where you have to do all the general elective and trad harmony courses you put off for the first 3 years and almost lose your mind. Or so ive heard. And nice info!
This tutorial certainly requires an intermediate level of theory to be able to flow with the ideas presented. It requires understanding the functionality of harmony in its essential aspects. I find it interesting because there are many tutorials dedicated to beginners where sometimes so much information is given that the student ends up overwhelmed without really understanding anything. This young guitarist explains very well, but I repeat, it is not for beginners. Gracias, saludos.
Help, Help Dani I was home and I left to visit "Handjob" and now I'm stuck there as this place feelZzz so good, like my new home.. A friend said that they visited my original home but the couch was either missing, or moved. Since watching your video someone set my house on fire and now it is a sad place...there is nothing minor about it!!! my life is totally diminished. I fear that perhaps the only thing left is the augmented chord. but how will this three-note chord fit into four-part jaZzz harmony???
Dani, in the patreon video, do you also talk about that biii°7 that usually goes down (someday my prince will come iii-biii°7-ii-V) and what to play over it?
I understand the application of diminished chords but they sound so old school cliche to my ears. I like altered chords more for the sense of wanting to resolve. Still I like your clear explanations and hands down approach of teaching it on the instrument.
Im wondering; are there any kind of exams or tests that are avalible on internet for people who did not attend any music school or college so that they can test themselves to check how much they know (I don't know what I don't know therefore I don't know how much I know at all relatively to whole body of musical knowledge)? And by "any kind" I mean those that resemble the real college exam that people have to pass to become a "certified pro".
If you listen to a tune and have zero idea what’s going on in the music after you hear it it’s an F If you can jam on the keys D If you can grad all the chords in root position after a few listens C If you can figure out the chord scales and play lines 8th note lines through the harmony B If you can improvise over the changes A

At 5:00, please don't use C in the base for an A minor, just after you have shown it in C major. You just hear it as a the same C major, instead of A minor.
Every year of Berkeley summed up in one comment: you spend a fortune to join an expensive club that will never come close to paying off and will probably make you worse at music. Not one thing you learn will be something that can't be learned online for free. The club membership and degree you're paying for are one of the worst possible investments you can ever make in life. If you somehow manage to still have taste at the end, you'll end up making great music for a very small audience, like The Dip. If you are in the 99%, you won't have taste at all, and you'll end up making soulless shite that sounds AI-generated, like Tyler Larson, whose debut release was so embarrassingly bad that he scrubbed it from the internet and bans anyone who mentions it in his chats. As such, he is better known as a guitar collector and gear shill than as a musician. Going to that school basically amounts to going into a lifetime of debt for the sake of making sure you can't ever write a good song again, unless you get extremely lucky, in which case you just get the debt you'll never pay off
