It looks like those weird pictures floating around outside of the maps are actually texture maps for the characters! Most of the time when you 3D model an object you need to make a texture Map to put on top of it.

Yeah they didn't move them far enough away from the game camera, kinda like that other game where you can see the other stages through the windows.
It feels like in this game (and some other similar ones, like the boss assistant one) don't plan for anyone playing their games on a PC instead of a phone, and so they stick things off to the side/only create textures/walls without expecting anyone to view their game on anything wider than a phone screen in portrait mode. :P
