I have a few plants I've created from one pad. The cactus you have is called Opuntia. I live in Ontario and during the winter I keep it in the dark indoors, no light, never any issues. In the summer I keep it outdoors in semi direct light that gets filtered through trees, to avoid it from burning, and out of direct rain to avoid rot. So far no fruit and its been 5 years. One plant is + 5 feet tall, and another us about 1 meter. I also have an Eastern Prickly Pear which can survive the winters outdoors. They grow low and super thorny. It has fruited once. They are pretty cool. When cactus flower, it is best to avoid turning or moving them as the pad will deform and twist as it grows towards the sun.
That is awesome
Thanks for watching! What bizarre plants do you grow in climates you’re not supposed to?
Great video...
Oh no I think a deer are my tomatoes and cucumbers leaves crying 😅
Ah! That’s not good! Lol
I want to try growing a eucalyptus plant. Do you have recommendations for places to buy plants online?
I don’t unfortunately. I have never looking into the online world of plants. I know that Clements greenhouses in Saskatoon has eucalyptus. I tried it once and it did well outside bringing it indoors was a completely different beast. They really love sunshine
This is a great video! I'm planning to get a bearded dragon, which love to eat prickly pears. Thinking of growing them to feed occasionally
❤❤❤
Lol yes lol warm weather...I find its a fine art keeping cacti in Canada lol
Prickly pear can take some cool temperatures so any warm up will make it grow ...I do like the green in winter lol
I don't believe in putting them in the cool dark cuz you can't get it dark enough it won't go dormate and it usually dies
I still love my cacti my drafty window is good enough for winter summer they want to go outside near the Apple tree :)
That is an impressive looking cactus! I think I mentioned a guy in Winnipeg that grew cacti in his yard. He was Dr Cacti, Ernie Brown. The facebook page is still up and it has some magnificent specimens. There is an archived article from the Winnipeg Free Press as well. He shared his knowledge with as many as he could. I wish I had a chance to take advantage of it.
I think it would be great to include a couple of succulents in my yard. Diversity is the key to sustainability no? Sure I summer my Kalanchoe, X-mas Cactus in my yard with my poinsettia ( i know not a succulent) and bring them indoors by Labour Day. But to have a plot of Brittle Prickly Pear & Pincushion Cacti would bring some wonder to my landscape. A boy can dream I suppose. Just too much going on to take a project on these days.
Thank you so much for showcasing your Cactus.

I’m a huge fan of sedums actually and have a few in the front that are gorgeous
K so I just looked at that Facebook group his collect is actually insane it’s so sad that he passed away though! Such talent
@@GardeningInCanada I had no luck with my sedums...but I probably made some rookie mistakes...I am finding these days that succulents are overpriced. I am kicking myself though when I saw a display @ a discount store selling succulents for 2 or 3 bucks a piece. I went back the next day they were all gone. The cashier said someone bought the entire display. They brought more in the following week, but priced them at $10 each.
All I can say is to have a yard like that, he had a passion for what he did. Not a hobby. I read some of the posts, if you missed his seminar, he'd invite you to his yard and he'd chat.
Thanks for your reply, stay cool, it's a scorcher out there
That’s wild and my sedums only do well in one spot on my entire property 😅
I understand there are at least a few species of opuntia that are hardy down to at least Penticton. I'm in Prince George and I might get an opuntia and see if it's hardy outdoors (on a high hill so it drains well)
I was gifted 3 pads by someone in Ottawa. Hers are outside in the ground year round and they're huge. So they can definitely survive for you.
Holy crap so this Cactus can survive Canadian winters? I live in Midwest USA. Would this work as well outdoors?
“Nearing two thousand followers”. 110k later… 🎉
that is wild hahaha
You grab it like it’s nothing . Did you shave the pricks off? Also do you eat yours ?
I did shave them off yea hahah. And no I haven’t tried yet! How do you eat them? Do you cook them usually
Just got around 7 pads to root here…let’s see what it becomes. 🤞
A very important question how long did it take you to get the spines out of your hands🤪
Hahah I think they are still resurfacing
Great video. Aren’t some prickly pear hardy not zone 5?
Yea so there are actually prickly pears in zone 3 even! They just aren’t very “pretty” short paddles but beautiful flowers www.saskwildflower.ca/nat_Opuntia-fragilis.html
Gardening In Canada Wow. Pretty flowers though.
I agree!
I had my prickly pear baby for years now and its just two spindly parts, not really sure on how to get it to properly grow pads.
lots of sun
Hey Ashley I love your channel! I’m in the sub tropics of Queensland Australia ... I know wrong demographic but I’m loving your content. I have a cherry tomato plant I am growing in the kratky method of hydroponics in a north facing window (all day sun) and it’s going great apart from the stems are curling (not the leaves) ... do you know what’s going on and how I can rectify this issue? Thanks so much in advance.
Could you send me a photo on Instagram or Facebook? I’m wondering if it’s from heat.
I hope this isn't a silly question...but is the plant supported with a stake along the main stem, and maybe a cage around it for when the branches spread out?
Ke Le that’s a GREAT question with an embarrassing answer.... not yet it’s one of my “gotta do” jobs..... but yeah he needs some stability and to be moved to a bigger container.
Great suggestion Ke Le!
Yay for productive conversations in the comments section! Literally my goal 😂
Where did you buy the seed or the cactus leaf?
Does this cacti grow fruit?
People have said it does but I cant get it too here
01:37 what did you do to him? his kind only do that when they're really traumatized, kinda like how a cabbage only turns into a brussels sprouts if it's seen world war 1
(this is a joke)
What I'm worried about is if they will fruit indoors?
From the Caribbean bi gro this out door eat it an need less water
wow
Do you actually harvest fruit from it?
You could sell those squiggly ones
Looks like a type of Nopalea, not Opuntia Ficus Indica. If the flowers have stamens sticking out beyond the petals, it's definitely a Nopalea. Aarre Peltomaa
Have they borne fruit yet?
How do I buy a prickly pear plant I live in Woodbridge Ontario? Thank you
Fb marketplace. Seriously!
Opuntia elata bonariensis.❤
How long does it take in Canada to grow a limb?
An entire year to be honest 😂 depends on the lighting
Ok .. wow ... lol I nearly choked on my coffee when I saw what you were growing, Australia has it listed as a prohibited invasive species with fines in some places reaching 130 k ! That being said the fruit are absolutely delicious, in all their purpley goodness! ( does it set fruit in your climate? ) that fella is only going to get bigger, need to work out some support for him , very easy to propagate cut four inch pieces from those “ long toms “ half bury them, length wise, in your coir/ perlite and away you go ! Loving your channel.. all the best .. Jules
That’s crazy! This wouldn’t grow here naturally at all. But it also doesn’t even fruit at all. He definitely needs a support structure of some sort he is incredibly heavy it’s insane.
See how dum. Here in Canada dandelion is considered invasive. Both dandelion and cacti are a super food!!!!! People are so dum
I haven’t been able to try dandelions yet! Never able to find enough
Did you grow it from a small leaf? How long to have it grow that tall?
Coconut what?
