Since then I, lived in skates One time during the transit strike I, skated from the George Washington Bridge to Canal and Broadway ( 8 1/2 miles). I held a job at River Bank State Park, as a Roller Skate Monitor. I skated 7 hours a day, 6 days a week.Then ride my bike from 145 St. to 178 St. to and from work (3 miles round trip). Then I was most fit. Some of the Rinks I stated; Empire, Spin Easy, Roxy, Park Circle, The Garage, Dominican Republic, California, Virginia and elsewhere.
Five years ago I discovered this video and watched it EVERYDAY for a good month. It inspired me to get back on the 8's after a 15 year hiatus. Now I come back and watch it from time to time to learn some of the moves I admired.

This makes a person forget about most of their problems for awhile. I have been skating since 8yrs old and i would practice at the white rinks and show off at the black rinks. when i came back to practice new stuff at the white rinks they would be amazed. this was a beautiful video. i LOVE the harmony at skating rinks. and whatever state i am in i always look for a black skating rink. This could have been a music video it was so well done. I came here to learn about soul skate and am so jealous of the vibrant skate community and scene you have in Detroit. It’s beautiful watching so many people cooperating on new choreography and ideas, sharing and goofing around. Our rink is pretty conservative right now but I’m hoping it loosens up. Heading to a soulful fitness skate class this weekend to learn some skate moves and I am crossing my fingers it’s like this.

I saw that when doing my research on the internet! Great topic for a thesis paper. I think one of today's roller skating myths that the public holds is that it is just for kids. Actually, most articles I found are about elderly people roller skating for nostalgia, exercise, and of course because it makes them happy. Roller rinks are most important because they can be used year around and provide a positive outlet to people of every age and background. I think many people forget that it is even an option of possible things to do for fun. I also hear many rinks are mismanaged and not community oriented enough to stay in business. Of course, culture has a lot to do with it. Another myth is that skating just belonged to the 70's and 80's, when you had Charlie Chaplin skating in his movies and Gene Kelly doing show stopping tap dances with skates on in the 50's. Roller Skating has a great history. Hopefully, its popularity just comes in waves but never goes away.
