As a DYI-er I’ve learned a great deal from your videos. Thank you for taking the time to produce them. Also, thank you for the scripture verse, I looked it up and loved it.
Thank you for the support, we greatly appreciate it!
This guy is a real professional painter....it is awesome to be able to watch the real deal when it comes to painting.
Just a thought, if you back roll the primer you don't have to dust unless its excessive ( i use a 24 inch floor broom). If the primer is too thick i cut the primer 10% with water. I always back roll the primer :) Different strokes for different folks :)
If I'm correct, the mopping was done BEFORE he sprayed the PVA primer in another video... Where he showed prepping the walls before priming.. He mentioned that he mopped the walls because they were smooth and didn't have any texture on them... and they were sanded... not sure why he included that insert with this video..
The Montana Painter where in Montana. I'm lived in Cascade county for years.
The Montana Painter backroll is necessary. I would do it even if I dusted. Guys I know would not be nice to the Idaho painter
I never back roll. no need to if you know how to spray and it's a nice drywall job.
You have to bankroll if you want your application warranted by sw
So you mask twice one before priming walls than off and you remask for finish paint . Thank you Chris!
He never said that. Fact, he said the opposite. He a gonna go straight to painting "same day".
Yep! Own that movie. Love your vids!
I'm a painter myself I learn alot from your videos
Amén brother!
Love the the Bible verse
God Bless you your family
Thanks Elyssa
Do you wear eye pro? What about the paint in the air
Thanks brother! Your videos are my "go to" when it comes to paint troubleshooting. Much appreciation and love from Cali. God bless.
you guys just kill these jobs huh ! awesome gj
What exactly is back rolling and is it done after I spray? Do you do 2 coats of primer and if so how long do you waiting between coats? How much does rainy weather play into dry time for primer? Do I need to do multiple coats of paint in doing multiple coats of primer?
I have a video explaining it in detail. Thanks for the question or comment. All our questions are now answered on our Facebook group "Paint Life Members". Join that group and you will receive all the help you need. Hope to see you there.
Excellent questions. Was totally wanting those questions answered as well
I did too. Screw Facebook.
Very professional! i was a painter for 30 years...by the way, I like the Isaiah quote! I know Jesus was a carpenter by trade, but he would certainly have you fellas's finish off his work! Nicely done.
Thanks for watching and supporting John!
Yep loved that movie!!!
+The Idaho Painter love u videos too!!
Started looking like a white smurf there buddy. Hahaha good vid
lol, thanks for watching!
Do you have to sand the primer coat? Also do you wipe down the walls after sanding them? Thanks for the help
We do not sand the primer on orange peel
Umpa lumpa umpadee doo I have a priming tip for you ....🐶 Thank Bro !
lol
Chris are you able to spray the topcoat without back rolling or do you roll the final coat? I just primed drywall (sprayed) and sprayed the first coat eggshell and it looked a little streaki so I just rolled the final coat eggshell and it is way better finish streak wise at least ... but still not perfect or is that just the way it is that you can’t get glossy paints to be streak free? Is there always a little bit of a unevenness ?
When we do new houses will caulk the inside of trim spackle holes sand and prime everything then we dig corners out and sand everything in house then finish ceilings then caulk against drywall everywhere them spray all trim closets go with trim too unless walk-ins they r concidered rooms
chris, i love your videos! Is it necessary to backroll the pva primer on new drywall? I'm a drywall finisher and alot of general contractors insist on us back rolling when we spray the primer on new drywall. Thanks and keep up the great work!
+The Idaho Painter That makes sense. Im from Chicago and 95% of our work is a smooth finish. Your spraying method is way faster than ours, I'm going to give it a try. thanks for replying
Yep!!! Um...so, you won't believe this, but I've been using a titan 440 impact to do all my priming in a new construction house. Obviously, It's taking a while and I'm overworking my 440. My local SW doesn't stock sprayers so gonna invest and order a bigger unit. lol
love that movie
At 7:30 you really do look like an Umpa Lumpa lol. Another great video Chris!
+The Idaho Painter you know I love ya really lol.
We had a home built for us, we close next week. The home is complete. We are going to re-paint over the "contractor grade paint". We were told it stains very easily. My question is, Do we need to prime the walls before re-painting and if so, can we use a paint and primer all-in-one type paint?
You do not need to re-prime
Hi Chris, I haven't seen anyone back rolling after you spray. Is this necessary to do, I have always back rolled to get some texture and work in any thick or thin spots. If you have a way around this, I'd love to hear it. Thanks, I really enjoy your videos. You guys are truly top notch!
I've been doing new construction for DR Horton, lennar, and mungo, we always backroll for one reason, repairs. The drywall is fuzzy after sanding, so primer helps smooth out walls. Backroll will let it penetrate into the mud so that when it gets repaired later, it won't look fuzzy again
@@CesarMartinez-wi7wc do you back roll the paint also if you ready back rolled the primer?
مرحبا كريس عندي استفسار هل يمكن استخدام الاله للمواد المذيبه والمواد الزيتي ام الاله خاصه للمواد البلاستيك وشكرا جزيلا
Thanks
Can i do this with a graco magnum x7?
Man you can do it with any sprayer is nothing from another world.
I know you said this was a textured wall but would you back roll over raw sheetrock with no texture or is your method the same? Thanks and love your videos
great painter
so I read some of the comments about back rolling so I thought I would put in my 2 cents from being a painter almost 20 years... yes you can just spray the primer, yes you can just spray the paint finish too, but.... primer won't seal as good just sprayed also depending on your primer it might flash spray strokes.. same with paint gonna look real 'sprayee' if you just spray the finish not to mention in most cases it will touch up like crap. some flats will touch up fine but anytime you take a roller to a sprayed finish to touch up your pretty much gonna see it. He's using a pva so those usually are very dead flat & will not flash at all. He's also doing high production work & a lot of painters will just spray everything on new construction, primer, then flat on all the walls & ceilings. Why because it's quick & you have to make $ & sometimes there's multiple homes after one another but its not the best way to apply. If you spray & backroll all your primer in it will feel like a job well done & be noticeably more solid I can guarantee that, then spray & back roll your finish paint & you'll be looking like a real painter that cares more about quality then $. That's just my experience with it
Feeling cute. Might go Gnarfle the Garthok later!
that's how we do drywall works well use pva it works well do u have a problem with ur paint fingering out of the sprayer? I used to I mix some water with the paint and it stopped fingering
what size filter mesh did you use on the spray gun. keep up the good work on teaching us
100 Mesh
your way of masking is really cool and fast gonna try that my boss makes us cut the plastic wit a razor knfe then tape it up its sorta slow glad I seen u doing that gonna try to do ur way looks faster and gonna get a wand extension also we use step ladder love ur videos u the man love the 1140 its the best
Noob question: is there no need to cover roughed-in electrical boxes before spraying primer?
The electricians will thank you if you wad some paper in there.
what is the labor costs for painting a room or house..?
The only thing I can say about back rolling is that it will smoosh into the nooks and crannies in the drywall texture where as spraying it’ll stay on top of it may leave a little pinholes you’d have to spray pretty heavy. I’ve done it too late before and showed up spray lines after the finish so I always go heavy and back roll now
Thanks for sharing Lance!
So what type of primer would you recommend before texture even goes on the wall?
Should I back roll after spraying primer and paint over a heavy orange peel?
Some of my walls are new drywall and some are existing paint
What PVA primers do you use or recommend for new construction?
do u guys put masking paper in those ceiling light cans
Yep
In terms of spraying with an airless, do you find it necessary to back roll any of the coats, either primer or topcoat?
Just depends on the situation, we do back roll under certain circumstances
@@Idahopainter What are the circumstances you would back roll?
Love all the vids and the time you take to explain!!
When you say spray a light coat, what are we looking for? What are the signs it's on too light or too heavy? Thanks much
Usually people don’t want to spend that much money on paint so they aren’t looking for something like a heavy done coat but of course you want to hit everything and not leave it light enough when you can see the difference color between the paint and drywall
are you taking the masking off after spraying the primer on the walls? Nice job Chris!
Can you make a video on doing a mill-pack? Bondoing, priming, caulking, top coating
Maybe you could leave a link in the description to your next video on my iPhone I can’t click the next video in line every time that would be very helpful thank you
Good idea! Thanks for watching Lance!
Hey guys, so do you cut and roll the two top coats
is painting the gang boxes a requirement ?
Great video. How many coats of primer do you need?
Hello Mr. Chris! Awesome videos! I just bought a titan 440 and I wanted to know what psi you set for pva primer. Thanks in advance!
2200 PSI
How expensive are those spray painting machines and which do you recommend best? Are they just as efficient as rolling?
From 300$ to 30,000Grand.
Any room > than 200sqft w/ few obstacles is the cutoff, or any textured ceiling you feel like taping off.
we have some existing walls that got all new knock down texture to match the all new sheetrock on the other floors. Would it be ok to install all trim/baseboard, and Spray PVA primer those walls with some pva overspray on the trim (not mask new trim). then later, spray all the trim. then mask trim and roll ceiling an walls? how would you do this?
PVA on trim is not a good idea
Here's a question...Stripping wallcovering that refuses to let go of the wall ( walls not primed ) I.e. not good at all, major headache. Customer are seniors and requests no solvent based primers. Do you have a go to water based primer to apply over wallcovering? Need help, answers A.S.A.P.!!!
So just one even coat throughout right?
Yep
@@Idahopainter ok just started @ Tesla & I'm going to be in powder coat
aludos amigo eres el mejor
YUP !!!
Should the PVA primer be semi transparent? Should you be able to see where the mud is after its primed? I'm using Kilz PVA not thinned with a 18" roller.
PVA is typically white.
Can the pva rolled if it's got new texture or just spray it
Yes, it can
Chris I have a question for you. I brushed the trims with oil base paint and the oil base passed a little bit to the walls. Do you apply oil base primer to the edge of the walls before painting them with latex? I really appreciate it.
Yes, I would do that
Thank you Chris. I really appreciate your help. God bless you.
No, don't mix the two. Why would you even think of that? Put latex w/ latex, and oil w/ oil. The little passovers won't matter, just touch them w/ some extra latex.
Luke 5:33-39.
Getting ready to paint one of our bedrooms at our house. The ceiling paint was peeling so we stripped it bare, down to the plaster. What kind/type of primer and paint do you recommend so this does not happen again. I'm also gonna put texture on the ceiling and the walls, do i put the texture on before or after primer?
We also stripped wallpaper off the walls with a product called "Worlds Best Wallpaper Stripper" from Home Depot. Is there anything else I should do to the walls.
I purchased a Graco airless with a 515 to primer/paint and bought a Hopper Gun as well to do the job (never used either before, but from watching your video's I think I'll be okay using them).
Been watching your video's for tips, they are excellent!!
Thanks!!
Would you put the texture on before or after the primer?
So in a new construction the paint starts after the windows are installed and before any door or floor is installed. Do you guys come back at the very end for final coat or touching?
We normally do not do new construction
do you have to water down the primer to spray it?
No, I do not
Did you not watch the video?
should you prime before or after texture ?
Chris is it really necessarily to back roll when your spraying
1)PVA?
2)Finish?
3)Stucco?
Sometimes I do sometimes I don't just depends on the feel and look I have if I think it's absorbing well and looks smooth I don't bother back roll is this a misteak?
We do not always back-roll, most times we don't. It just depends on the situation, we do back-roll stucco
thumbs up
When you spray new drywall how many coats of primer and paint?
1 and 2
Do you have to prime new construction drywall? is there another way to get good coverage?
Jody Walker - if you don't seal the new drywall and or the the texture it will suck up the moisture from your paint and dry blotchy and require many coats. By that time the fiber on the board will start to raise and so can and will the tape joints. The drywall primer is not only a primer.... It's a surface sealer! Poly Vinyl. PVA is cheap and doesn't need to be perfectly applied so there's no reason to skip it. If you do you will not only need more paint to cover the walls properly but you're gambling with the tape lifting and fiber raising.... Especially on smooth surfaced walls.
So you spray the walls first and then the ceilings when you are priming or does it matter?
Ceiling first, always.
Never mind, just read a previous reply to the same question... Great vids
I have a question do you remove the electical panel to mask before texture and priming?
No, we do not
We have to used compressor
About how many sq. feet can you expect to complete per hour including dusting, masking and priming? I understand it is a rough estimate.
To clarify, that would be drywall sq. ft, not floor space.
Chris what do I do with the lacquer lines left behind for spraying the trim with lacquer finishes? ? ?
Sand it and respray it
Buff it out with 600 grit sand paper
yep
Thanks for watching!
How many jobs do you do on average from May-October? That's my exyeri or season here in the Seattle area. Maybe stretching it a bit.
I live north Seattle near the canadian border and i paint from feb to mid December . not just me a lot painter . you need to learn the mind of paint you're gona use plus an other trick
Good video, thanks for posting it. I am wondering about the value in rolling the paint after spraying, would that be better for rolling any remaining dust into the paint?
that subliminal thumb got me
Lol, thanks for watching!
Mr ldaho painter do you have videos PAINTING kitchen cabinets.Thank you
Yes, we do
would a titan 540 have the capacity to push that much primer that fast?

Special Thanks-Chris Berry, The Idaho Painter
Do you not sand the PVA after it's applied ?
No, we do not
I am thinking this video is old and you were not as experienced then. No back rolling, not covering electric outlets ? I hope you do that now.
can you compare the graco 795 vs titan 1140
Both great sprayers!
excellent video chris i like it
U def wanna spray ur closets first that way ur line isnt smacking ur walls but im sure u knew that...
Thanks for sharing Jesse!
Is that a level 5 finish?
nope, it's just primer. like glue.
Yup
Hey Chris,
In the past I was using a rag to dust off the dust from the walls. But then when I use the paint sprayer (similar to the 1 you use, just the smaller version) after priming new drywall the walls are gritty and I literally have to sand absolutely everything with a 120 grit to make it feel smooth, like how a wall should feel..
I saw your mopping the wall video and I'm going to try that on my current project I'm doing. However I'm wondering if you could tell me why the walls feel gritty all over everywhere, after spraying on new drywall with primer? Is it a pressure related thing, a dust related thing, or should I just go over the walls with a roller after spraying, to try and avoid the problem?
Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!
Cause of the dust on the walls
yep.
So for Graco tip will be 621?
Yes or 619
Ohhh I never thought of that that you were using tightened tips when you were saying the tip size be good to clarify I was just going to order a 1221 Graco rac x lol
Can wall paint be used instead of primer on new drywall?
771blahblah - yes but it will dry blotchy and require more coats meaning more paint! You are also gambling with the tape joints lifting as well as the fiber on the drywall board raising. PVA is more than a primer... It's a sealer!
Yeah what he said but also, the topcoat is usually 2 or more times expensive as a pva primer, the pva primer is to cut down on paint costs
Yep. That was a funny movie. Gross when eating the soap
Ug
Not sure what the point of hurrying so fast is... PVA isnt fussy it's blow and go primer that I put all the greenhorns on to learn technique.
Also an idaho painter- North Idaho.
Don't hurry, but hurry? lol. You went full hermeneutic.
@@immeohmyoh Blow and go shouldnt be interpreted as speed.
woow
what is nam this machine spraying..
I want one .
It is a Graco 695
How is the praice
@@Idahopainter no don't listen to him, it is a Titan 440. Both good though. 695 is the new fad, but good. 440 is more affordable, if you want. Bout 1200$ for 440. Bout twice that for 695.
I don't like spraying first coat primer on new drywall especially if a power sander was used to sand. a power sander will leave little fuzzies and a sprayer will encapsulate these in the paint and they will show on a smooth finish. using a roller for the first coat will work these into the primer so they don't show. sure its nice to go in and spray a whole house in a couple hours and be gone but for the level 5 finishes that my customer expects its not going to cut it.if someone has mastered a way to overcome this I am all ears.
freethinker52 Are you a taper?? I mean a good taper! A level 5 has almost nothing to do with your priming technique. If you want to produce a level 5 finish, then first you need to get rid of that power sander! My walls never see a power sander. You can’t produce a level 5 with that bs! Because if you need to sand that much then you’re using too much material. Put it on, wipe it tight and move on.
Chris - love your videos!!! Is there a particular PVA primer you like and can recommend? I will be rolling I think because of cost.
The Idaho Painter Thanks, Chris. So I was in HD yesterday and the guy talked me out of the PVA saying that it soaked in too much and required a ton of coats. Thoughts? Thus he said just go with the Kilz blue can primer. I am thinking of returning that and taking you up on your recommendation of the Sherwin Williams contracts PVA primer.
When I paint I use a 17 tip
