  • Sump mods on my AC 2 Litre engine.
While awaiting new engine parts, I've carried out some upgrades to the sump. With an engine designed during World War 1, oil surge was probably not a concern. I've now added baffles and a centre pick-up for the oil pump. A new upgraded oil pump is on its way.

I switched over to vacuum extraction for the majority of my oil changes a number of years ago. It's certainly a lot faster and easier than dragging out the jack stands and crawling under the family's vehicles.
But, my 1993 Chevy C1500 5.7l pickup truck would cause the dipstick-inserted extraction line to get hung up.
Off with the oil pan, some cutting of the slosh baffles, and the welding in of a blocking/guiding plate or two fixed the hang-up problem.
For those that have a near religious ideological fixation on their particular oil change ritual, the vehicles get full pan drains and filter changes every year or so while I have them up on the jack stands for other periodic maintenance.

Excellent fabrication and commentary. Love your hand drill. With modern age of cordless drills, is like stepping back in time, also noticed you hand working the chuck to get first bite. Lovely Blackbird appreciating your work.

I enjoyed the way you carefully built the baffles just using hand tools. Very nice job, but I worry that you are restricting the amount of oil flow to the pickup tube under the baffle. It seems that when you are moving most of the oil goes to the back of the engine where the pickup should be. I hope it works out for you, but then you have been right on so many things for your car.

I wondered about that too, but easier to add holes than to take away! I'll probably drill a couple more.
