Another great cover and sweet guitar playing! And respect to saying the lyrics while playing those fast bits, I know those parts can sometimes get tricky 🙂👍
Nicely done. Arthur Blake is all but forgotten by now, but he was a monster player. He was also distinctly Misogynistic. The real words were "the day you try to leave me, honey that's the day YOU die". Killing an unfaithful woman was a recurrent theme in his songs.
Thanks for watching Mellissa! Yeah Blake is one of the greats for sure. You’re right though, and it’s an unfortunate problem you can run into when learning these older songs. That’s why I changed the lyrics in this case. You’ll notice I also changed the line “I’ve got one eye on my pistol and the other on YOUR trunk” to “MY trunk”. To me this changes the implication of the song so that the singer is no longer waiting to kill his girlfriend/wife, but is instead contemplating wether to pack up HIS trunk and leave, or to grab his pistol and…well, perhaps use it on the man his partner has been unfaithful with (or indeed himself, hence how now the day she leaves may be the day “I die” rather than “you die”). Definitely not an action I would encourage either but still seems to sit better with me than the threatening to kill the woman in the song. Anyway, thanks for again for watching.
