Classic TV Theme: The Odd Couple Thru the Years

- The original tv 'Odd Couple' ran for five seasons thanks to good scripts and perfect casting. It, like the attempts to relaunch the show with different stars, used the Neal Hefti movie theme. For a while there was a voiceover explainer but it caused problems when they had to rewrite it to remove the reference to their being 'childhood' friends, as the show did a (very funny) episode showing them meeting while on jury duty. In fact several other shows reference their meeting long before their jury duty, but viewers took it all in stride. Several opening sequences and a closing credits roll are included here.
Years later 'The New Odd Couple' featured Ron Glass (of 'Barney Miller' fame) and Demond Wilson; it had a brief run but didn't catch fire. More recently a revival from Matthew Perry ran for a few seasons. But these pretenders just weren't Tony Randall and Jack Klugman, the real Felix and Oscar.
During the holidays I can’t get enough of The Odd Couple and The Honeymooners.
On November Thirteenth, Felix Unger was asked to remove himself from his place of residence.
That request came from his wife.
Deep down he knew she was right.
But he also knew that someday he would return to her.
With nowhere else to go,
he appeared at the home of his friend, Oscar Madison.
Several years earlier,
Madison's wife had thrown him out,
requesting that he never returned.
Can two divorced men share an apartment,
without driving each other crazy?
*theme ensues*
I liked the Matthew Perry and Thomas Lennon version too. The problem I feel with that show was that CBS didn't give it a chance. They would run it for about 6 weeks and then pull it off the schedule for almost a year then bring it back and again pull it off the air after 6 weeks. It never had a chance to gain an audience.
It did last at least 3 seasons close to the original show's 4, so you can be grateful of that.
It had 3 years to gain an audience. The problem was miscasting of Oscar and Felix and unfunny scripts. Plus it's impossible to top Tony and Jack who just were Felix and Oscar.
@@kendallrivers1119 I do agree with the unfunny scripts but only the miscasting of Matthew Perry portraying Oscar Madison. Thomas Lennon on the other hand, I thought played a good Felix Unger. I was surprised the show even lasted 3 seasons because I seriously thought it gonna be canceled after just 1.
@@Neville60001 The original show ran for five.
Although the New Odd Couple with Ron Glass and Demond Wilson did not catch on, I did like the updated version of the Neal Hefti theme. In the closing credits sequence, I paused it to see who were the artists. I was pleasantly surprised to see it was arranged and performed by Trombone Shorty. I became a fan of his music when I saw him at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh a few years ago, and made the effort to see him whenever he returned to town. He always puts on an exciting show. Check him out when he comes to your town!
On the original intro Plas Johnson (Pink Panther sax solo) and Harry "Sweets" Edison play the main horn parts along with members of The Wrecking Crew.
Very nice compilation!
Why do I feel like this is missing a version? Oh, right most people forget that this was a Movie first.
Love the old odd couple theme
The Odd Couple is a property that really cannot fail. After all, its central conceit - the neatnik and the slob living together - is universal. Neil Simon even brought it back to the stage casting two women in the roles (including Sally Struthers at one point), and it still worked.
I actually liked the 80s redo with Ron Glass and Demond Wilson. On the one hand, it was typecasting at its worst (but then, so was the original), but on the other, I wasn't astute enough to always be comparing against Randall and Klugman. But too many people WERE comparing, and they just weren't having it.
Didn't much care for the most recent version, but I'm not a big fan of Matthew Perry anyway.
No matter where they go,
they are known as the Couple.
They’re never seen alone,
so they’re known as the Couple.
As I’ve indicated,
they are never quite separated.
They are peas in a pod.
Don’t you think that it’s odd?
Their habits I confess,
none can guess with the Couple.
If one says no it’s yes,
more or less with the Couple.
But they’re laugh-provoking,
yet they don’t really know they’re joking.
Don’t you find
when love is blind
it’s kind of odd.
Don’t you think it’s odd?
Don’t you think it’s odd?
Don’t you think it’s odd?
Don’t you think it’s odd?
I thought it was funny that on the new odd couple's intro they use the original Yankee stadium instead of the remodeled stadium that was there at the time of that show being on the air.
There was only one odd Couple
Performance perfekt blended. :)
On the second version wish the slamming door effects were left in. 😉👍
4:04 Groovy!!!! Now, THIS is New York!
New odd looked like Neil Degrasse and Wayne Brady
FRIENDS brought me here.
I agree
There's only one 'Odd Couple' for me....Lemmon & Matthau!
5:39 credits 😊
I liked the new one too
Does any one know who the mystery woman is who Oscar is following
When was the Ron Glass and Demond Wilson odd couple on ABC and when was it on the ABC schedule
1982-83 on ABC.
The new Odd Couple with Lamont from the Overgrown Dummy show
John Amos would have been a better Oscar Madison.
The second & fourth version here are the best... the drums were given a looser leash to drive the tune liberally.
Love that intro in any era! But I so agree it only worked on tv with Tony and Jack. Demond and Ron were fantastic actors but their show was ruined by lousy scripts that were just rip offs of the original show's scripts and they lacked the remarkable chemistry Klugman and Randall had, and the Matthew Perry version was just awful! Cheesy, cringey, far less witty and intelligent writing and jokes, and the casting of Matthew Perry as Oscar was a huge miscast, would've made more sense to have gotten Matt Leblanc or Ray Romano etc. The guy who played Felix wasn't bad, but was a bit too robotic and monotone for my liking.
Matt Perry as Oscar was just a puzzling choice. Why not have him play Felix? He was much more suited to that. In fact, why not have Matt Perry as Felix and Matt LeBlanc as Oscar? At least we know the chemistry would have been there.
