    Edo isn't Lagos. If U like tell us he is from Igbo, we will still vote for him as far as he has capacity, sympathy and ready to turn Edo back to the giant of the world.

      Which LP? The one they are all fighting for small money in their party. Asuen is and remains the best candidate in this election. To be honest, we can't compare Obi's government as Anambra gov to Obaseki's government in Edo state.Obaseki comes far on top by achievements, we only like Obi for his frugality not performance.

    I am from Ishan, Edo State. Three people from my family have Yoruba names, although we are never affiliated to Yoruba people. Our parents who gave us the Yoruba names didn't understand the meaning of the names, and never lived in any of the Yoruba areas. Historically, it happened that I was born as Buldozers were pouring into our village for the construction of our main road. The contractor was a Yoruba man. His name was Babatunde, for example. My father named me, therefore, Babatunde. The other two people (my uncle's children )were named Dupe and Temitope many years later.
    And, guess what ! After Edo state, Lagos was the only state in which I lived before checking out. I love my Yoruba name because of its meaning, and because it is very short. It is one of the shortest names in Nigeria. For me, personally, it is better than having a colonial name ( a French name or an English name ) which I see as a mark of slavery. Your name is your African identity. It is very symbolic.

      Point of correction: The name is not “Ishan” it is “Esan.” It still surprises me that, even after 64 years since the British left Nigeria following independence, many people from Esan land still use the word “Ishan,” a term derived from the British pronunciation… ESAN IS THE NAME.

    A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association that can't articulate between "Son of the Palace" and "Son of the Soil"? It is no coincidence that many Binis bear Yoruba names. In Nigeria, people just don't pick up names from another ethic group. It happens, but it's rare. The fact that many Binis bear Yoruba names to me is an indication of some Yoruba origins. It occurs too frequently to just be about an affinity for Yoruba names. Akpata also means rock in Yoruba. Yes, you might choose to not identify as Yoruba today but you're likely of Yoruba ancestry. Of course you want to become governor of Edo State so I get it.

    • @CamillusAmaechiMbah-gz2mf
      @CamillusAmaechiMbah-gz2mf 3 месяца назад +2

      But your logic is faulty. You said it is rare for a Bini person to pick up YORUBA name just for the sake of it but what stops his own from being one of such rare occasions. Many people who are not from the South named their children good luck Jonathan and even people from the South named their children Buhari when these people were in power. Will their people disown them because they bear names which is not from their tribe. Nigerian politics will one day overcome this silly penchant for clutching at anything to discredit credible candidates just because you support a different candidate.

    • @themark7948
      @themark7948 3 месяца назад

      @@CamillusAmaechiMbah-gz2mf No. I said it was rare for Nigerians to pick up names from other ethnic groups for the sake of it but that it was not uncommon for Binis to bear Yoruba names, which means that the Binis aren't just picking up Yoruba names but bear these names because of a historical connection. I don't know how many people named their children Buhari, but again, I stand by my position that such act would be random. Goodluck Jonathan is a bad example because those are two English names.

      There is a Yoruba speaking community in Edo state, they make up almost about an entire local government in Edo state in the Edo South... So, it is not uncommon to see people from here bearing Yoruba names whereas they are Edos... The issue is not because of his Yoruba names, but that he is from Edo South, the same region with the present governor... In my opinion I think Labour Party should have done better by strategically positioning a candidate from Edo central for governorship, not understanding the local politics can cost you a lot...
