  • Today's video is an exciting one, a trip to see Yorkshire Kris and a video tour of his amazing exotic garden! Kris grows a wide range of palms, bamboos, arid plants and tropical style rarities and they look incredible in an established garden setting. It was great to have a chat with Kris and discuss all things tropical style, exotic gardening, garden design plus some care tips for the plants we both grow and love, I hope you enjoy it!

    Hey George, thanks for making this video of my garden. It's interesting to see it through someone else's eyes. Your photography skills are next level and make everything look lush.
    I don't think to 3m tall gardeners have ever been caught on film together so it's a RUclips first! 🤣😂

    I can't believe how much everything has grown in the month since I was there ,I found his scheffleras and that huge jubaea chiliensis incredible . So much bigger in the flesh than you imagine from viewing on a laptop screen . Another great video guys .

      @@YorkshireKRIS I'm the guy who was visiting Simons garden after visiting your garden .His bamboos were exactly as you described and those 30 year old scheffleras just wow a true jungle. I cant see my wife letting me ever go that extreme with our garden 🤣but it was really impressive to see ,its on another level 👌
      I got to see 2 of my favourite RUclips gardens that day you've got a cracking garden kris I was impressed you have some beautiful palms and plants on show .

      @@staffordshireShane Thanks Shane and the growth that happens at the back end of the summer, particularly after a good bit of rain is something else! I've not seen Simon's garden myself but remember seeing it on Gardeners World some years back and being really impressed, it's fascinating to see what a lot of these exotics look like after some years in the ground.

    Really enjoyed this! One suggestion for the benefit of us non-native English speakers: identify the plants in writing as you present them! Beautiful garden, impossible to replicate in my corner of Canada ... I'm jealous .

Don’t worry, I do usually try to feature more plant names but it was a bit of a rush to get this video out, hopefully you find other plant ideas and inspiration from my vids at Mark’s Crazy Tiki Garden etc. Kris had created a lovely paradise, I agree it’s an amazing garden!

    Omg! The Borinda papyrifera, that blue colour is mindblowing. Great footage of the gorgeous Dahlias!
    That Jubaea is gigantic, be patient George, time will come for yours... The Yucca linearis is a real beauty and the
    Agavesas well. The Brahea armata, omg again, so beautiful, and the T. princeps as well. Hi Kris, thank you for the tour,
    you're doing an amazing job, just as your friend George does! RIP Elisabeth, big respect, you will be missed a lot.❤

    Loved this video....just superb. Great to see and hear the tour with the cool commentary. Brilliant 👏. My three favourite plants when I went round this summer were the jubaea, brahea armata and the yucca linearis. 👍

      Thank you very much my and I probably could have selected your top 3 from my visit! The Jubaea is a stunner isn’t it, just at that tipping point where things get really exciting. The gingers, Schefflera macrophylla and Pink China Colocasia were all really impressive too but I can’t fault you on your choices!

    This is a great video, and Kris' garden is amazing as expected. However it is really good to hear Kris talking about how this had developed over the years, and you made some great points about planning. I was wondering if you have thought about doing a video on planning a tropical garden for the long term?

    Loved the tour. You guys make a great team. Early in video you featured some awesome cannas at entrance to garden. Do you know specifics on the actual scientific or common name of them would love to find some

    I always love both your videos. Any suggestions for a good video editor you use to post videos?

      Hi and thank you very much! Personally I use Premier Pro currently but it is on a subscription plan and needlessly complicated for simple chopping and editing vids, from what I hear Final Cut Pro is supposed to be simpler if you're on Apple but even I Movie will do a good job. Davinci Resolve have a free version that's well worth checking out too.

    My colocasia died this winter. Had them in pots and were fine the year earlier left out and came back. Didn't this year. Maybe they weren't really Pink China.

      Hi Robert, pleased you enjoyed the vid! It completely depends on the plant but generally I’m a fan of larger scale soil improvement then giving plants a little boost of the right kind of fertiliser mix in late spring - which plants is it you’re wondering about?

      Kris thinks it might be caudatus Giant Form but they have self seeded over the years. They’re all easy to grow and colourful to be honest!

    Can Jubaes grow in clay?

      Hi, a lot of palms don’t mind getting their roots down into clay, they definitely generally prefer the richer soil and source of moisture to a an incredibly dry or sandy spot. The only thing I would say is that the spot doesn’t want to be waterlogged in winter here in the U.K. so I try to plant mine in banks or mounds to get the best of both worlds.

    Is it possible to grow a coconut tree ?

      Hi, they can be grown but tricky in the UK unfortunately, they need a lot of warmth and light year-round and struggle even as a houseplant.

      Hi, to be honest, I've never grown any from seed but looking at the amount of Chusquea seedlings in the ground around Kris' bamboo, then most of the hardier varieties aren't tricky to grow. Sorry I can't help specifically but if I find a good guide then I'll return to this comment and link to it.

      It's definitely a strong grower! A lot of the tropical style gardening involves managing thugs and strong growers, the effect of the packed border at the end of the season is definitely worth it though!
