Choreography depends on the dancers and the teachers. Things are made for different people and since everyone has a different opinion, not everything’s gonna be the same( I hoped this helped😊)

Actually, I would love to try. I went to art school, which is 40% creativity and 60% engineering on the fly. I think it's do-able.

There are two Freed factories in the UK, one in London and one here in Leicestershire. My best friend works at the one here in Leicestershire, she makes the uppers for the Classics and the Studios before they go to the makers. She takes pride in her work and doesn't tolerate any mistakes in her work either! I don't dance anymore, haven't for years since I was a teenager but I still do some exercises at my "barre" (i.e. bedroom dresser) and my best friend had a pair of pointes made for me at her factory for me to practice in at home. 😊 I get to hear all about what goes on in the factory and it really is interesting!
🥰 Oh Josephine, I share your love of factories. Many people I graduated with asked why I ended up working in a lot of factory work. Factory work is SO SATISFYING! I too enjoyed this episode! Craftsmen are highly UNDERrated! So much love to them. My first job out of high school was with Danskin in the late 70s and they were still in their height of their production.
I think it would be nice to have tangible products at the end of the day. I enjoy my job but sometimes code on the screen doesn’t make me feel accomplished
I agree! When I was much younger in my late late teens or very early twenties I used to work at the Philips Magnavox factory in tennessee. I really miss that job! I'm aging myself, but I used to work there when they were still making those really big projector TVs and I used to put together the computer boards and then wire them up and then put them in the back of the TVs before sending it down the line. I also used to work on a different part where I used to solder certain pieces onto the computer boards. I really really enjoyed that job! I wish we had one where I live now.

I wonder how much the makers are paid. If that one guy is really popular I hope he is valued by the company and compensated accordingly as an artisan.

Even if they just got $10 per pair, at 40 pairs a day that’s $400 a day income. That’s awesome. But you and I know they are worth much more than that!

I’ve been watching your RUclips channel since almost I first started ballet, and I have always dreamed I would get pointe shoes. I passed my exams and I am getting them on Saturday!!! I’m so excited

I want a video of a maker going to watch his shoes on the dancer. THAT'S the video we all need. How often do dancers invite their maker to come watch them dance? Not often, I'm willing to bet (I get that makers and dancers being in different countries could make this prohibitive).
This actually brings up a good point. You'd be surprised by how many pointe shoe makers have never seen a professional ballet production!
I wonder what they would think if they watched how the various dancers prepare their pointe shoes before breaking them in during class, rehearsal and then the actual ballet performance. I imagine it would be pretty hard for some of them. Many years old I made a veil for a friend's wedding. It was my gift to her. We had talked about the color, length, style, beading, flowers, and how to attach it on the day. She told me she wanted a candlelight white with matching flowers and pearls. It was to have a blushed that went over her face. She loved it when I gave it to her and kept thanking me. On the day of the wedding I was shocked to see that cheap tiny pink ribbon roses had been added to the original roses I had created. I would have gladly have included some pink roses that were made of the same silk I had used. Part of me didn't want anyone to think that I had made or added the cheap ugly flowers to the veil. I didn't say anything, but it did kinda hurt because I had spent hours gathering the materials, making the flowers, and handmade everything just like she requested.
@nicoleleung3518 I actually wouldn't be that surprised. Crown maker seems like he'd rather have a pint with the fellas at the pub instead of watch a ballet. Most blue collar men don't aspire to watch ballet. But I think that that would enjoy it even if for no other reason then l than they could see first hand how their shoe is used and watch them in action.

@meiraloraduncan8953 I see where you're coming from, but I don't think it's the same thing. Pointe shoe makers likely know how their shoes are customized by ballet dancers because no pointe shoe is ever going to perfectly fit every dancer. Also, dancers aren't tearing apart pointe shoes because they're ungrateful or unappreciative, its simply necessary for them to do so.
I wish you could make a series, visiting ALL of the brands factories!!

OK. Quick survey here. How many of you have your hearts skip a beat every time you see a brand new shiny pair of pointe shoes?
Wow 40 shoes a day?!
Ok so assuming he's working an 8 hour day there 480 minutes in 8 hours.
480/40 is 12 mintues for each shoe.
And if he's following proper labor laws and taking 2 breaks and a lunch at some point he probably makes them even faster.

So, since they have to turn it after gluing the box, they have to work fast enough to turn it around before the glue dries or the box would be solid inside out? I've seen someone making leather normal shoes and turning them, but the idea of turning this cardboard and glue creation inside out fast enough that you can still turn it is just crazy.
It won't dry that fast, hence them being out into the heated drying "oven" for 24 hours. Think of it like paper mache. That takes a long time to dry!
I wear Energetik/RP Bravas, two different widths 🙄. But because of the shoe size discrepancy I am considering Act pointes. The elastic skin would sort many of my spillage/swelling issues, and being able to adjust the metatarsal area would be such a blessing, because my feet change size dramatically (two nights ago I could have fit a whole extra foot in my left shoe, but a week ago I could barely get it on). Hormones and weather changes make pointe life very challenging!
I have this problem with my left foot. I have an old ankle injury and tendonitis that comes back from time to time. It's permanently swollen around the heel and ankle but will swell even larger from use, weather, a long day on my feet. Most days I wear one size but there are days I could wear two sizes up on that foot. It is really frustrating.

I do adult ballet classes and bought a pair of GM a while ago, but the fitters aren’t great, so it was totally the wrong shank and I can’t wear it, it is awful to dance in (for my level, with the hardest shank). That satin is also a pain to sew ribbons and elastic because it is so stiff compared to others. I eventually bought other pointe shoes (grishkos) a few weeks ago, the gaynors are almost double the price to buy again. Maybe sometime in the future with different fitters. Love your videos!
I had a similar experience with GM : went to their appointed fitter, who was so late arriving she had a huge queue waiting. She did me a fitting, paying extra for vegan materials and I could never wear them, the width was completely off. Last time I bothered with them (I am a much older dancer, so the fitter probably thought I was a waste of her time).
@@ritawing1064 jip, that’s what I also think about my experience. They don’t really bother or do a lot of effort with adult dancers, even though many of the ladies who dance with me are probably more committed than some kids.

Makers should get to watch dress rehearsals or class, or performances for free or something because dancers literally live their entire careers in these shoes and some makers never even get to the ballet themselves.

I found this absolutely fascinating, I’m not fooling. Call me limited, but I had no idea that I could have potentially become a pointe shoe maker. To have had a hand in the beauty of ballet would have been wonderful. Hard work, but wonderful.

Could you please do a video on what is going on with RP? EX: which brands and/or models are still being manufactured (RP, R-class, Energetics) and Bloch's plans, if we know them, as to if they are going to be making shoe alternatives with the lasts.

have you ever thought of how big the environmental impact is if the shoes wears out so fast? All the resources that goes into growing and making the materials to transporting to breaking down the pointshoes after they are thrown away?

Yes, actually. But I still think single use cheap random chinese products are much more harmful than shoes dancers need to dance. Not that many professionals in the world actually. And chinese products being mostly trash from the beginning are the real problem, a huge problem, most people keep buying it ("I can have it, it is cheap, just a dollar, in worst case I'll throw it away) not a tiny percentage being balllerinas who can't perform without shoes. Just saying. It is all about numbers. I think environment would be ok with pointe shoes for ballerinas, because they make an almost invisible difference compared to all the trash being produced for literally no real reason.
At least the materials are biodegradable (wood, satin, cardboard, glue) and most importantly, no plastic is involved.
@@sharim Except for Gaynors- which are advertised as environmentally friendly because they are recyclable- but as we now know recycling is carbon intensive and largely unbeneficial.

I'd heard that Russian Pointe no longer exists? It's just R-Class now and they're now produced in the US, not Russia? Is that true or have I been lied to?

Question: Not a ballet person, just a lurker. Are they premade or made by request?
Premade mostly. but i know Freed also does custom requests for pro's. other brands may do that, too. but Freed is most well known for it.
In the premade there's usually already a good amount of choice per brand: various models, and separate sizing for length, width and shank hardness

@@kfranco129 you mean like they get stuck with overstock in weird sizes? i'm sure it happens, they even produce custom shoes that never get used. on the other hand pointe shoes have a short life span and it's good that they accommodate the dancers with outlier sizes - otherwise they couldn't dance. it's hard enough to find well-fitting pointe shoes in a size 5.5, let alone for very large sizes or very narrow sizes. i think many of these overstaocked shoes will eventually find dancers feet.
I think if Josephine's brother became a pointe shoe maker, her universe would be complete.
