    I'm from Regensburg, and I think its a must visit to learn about Bavaria. Regensburg is the 2nd oldest city in Bavaria, founded by the romans, and there are still buildings from that time and and almost complete medieval city center. Besides that, its a students town with 25% student population and thus lots of entertainment, festivals etc going on. (at least when I lived there, its been some years)
    If you want to visit some traditional festivals I'd shun Octoberfest, cause its over commercialized and overrun with tourists. I'd recommend Gäubodenfest in Straubing or Volksfest in Rosenheim.
    Try beer from local breweries. Eat local specialties. Every town has its own.

    I'd perhaps add my own perspective (also US expat, living for several years in Munich and having visited Berlin a lot, but never lived there): Berlin is great to visit, but Bavaria (at least Munich) is maybe a better place to settle down and live. Things generally feel cleaner, better organised, and more efficient in Munich than in Berlin.
    Since you asked for smaller towns and cities to visit in Bavaria: it's a really big place, so it depends a bit on where you are. But here are some small towns and cities which I can really recommend and are not *too* touristy:
    * Regensburg
    * Bamberg
    * Dinkelsbühl
    * Nördlingen
    * Bad Tölz
    * Weißenburg
    * Erlangen
    (Lots of people would also say Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which is really beautiful, but also pretty touristy.)

      Regensburg is beautiful. I don't know any of the others but adding them to my list!

      100% agree, Bavaria seems way more family-friendly.
      Thank you for the suggestions!

    Hi, Bavarian from a rural area near Munich here. I just wanted to give my two cents to the staring while walking towards each other: When somebody is walking towards me they are also “staring” because once we are within talking distance we will greet each other, whether we know each other or not. That’s standard human courtesy, and I would guess historically it has always been like that. The only reason people in cities don’t do that is obviously because it would be exhausting to greet everybody when you walk the streets. But in rural areas it’s still done like that. Of course in your case they will probably look at you a little more “interested,” nobody should dispute that.
    Anyway, my advice is to just look back at them, flash that winning smile of yours while simply saying “Hallo” and walk on. Believe me, for many people, male or female, a short smile from a young attractive woman like you makes their day. Deliberately looking away is definitely considered rude in most cases I can imagine.
    Have a nice Sunday!

      Ahaha thank you for the advice! I guess it's time for me to stop feeling so awkward about it 😅 I love the greetings, now just to get on board with the staring and smiling :)

    I lived in Munich about 12 years ago, and visited Berlin often (Almost every weekend, ha) And I think both cities are so different and it's hard to compare them for me, but I agree with your comparison.
    I have a stronger inclination towards Berlin because mind you I was in my early 20s when I lived in Germany, so all the quirkyness, extravaganza, and diversity called me way more than the kindness of München.
    I wonder if now that I'm in my late 30s Bavaria would be a better place for me, haha.

    Nice cities in northern Bavaria (Franconia) are also Bamberg, Coburg, Dinkelsbühl, Bad Windsheim with a beautiful museum (ancient houses of farmers - insight into the former life in the country) - and not far from the famous Rothenburg small cities in Baden-Württemberg: Langenburg and Schwäbisch Hall - have a nice time in Bavaria

    you should see Füssen or the lake "Walchensee" and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. So pretty. Definitely go to a hockey game, it's so different to the US. so many chants, it can be loud and cheerful or dramatic, whenever the referee can't do a proper job.

    I love this...my first city in Germany was Munich during winter. Then I went to Berlin and I found that Berlin was far more friendlier than Berlin. Now that we live in a small village in Bayern, I can say that Bayern is very friendly. And now I love Munich just as much as Berlin. Both are great places. If you want true Bayern experience, come visit in summer when we are back. Landshut is a very Bayern...especially when you come during Landshuter Hochzeit

    Hello Lieblingsnachbarin,
    very interesting topic, well presented. The looked so nice and we all need a little bit more sunshine. ☺️🌻
    The city of Berlin is a huge mix of cultures and people, finding a true Berliner/Berlinerin can be thug.
    You know that you are in Berlin if you had a bad customer service experience. It's a kind of, "your welcome"🤭🤫. But i promise, it's not everywhere in Berlin.
    But the most restaurants have a lot of untrained waiter's or some students without anykind of experience. I work in gastronomy for over twenty years.
    Okay Berlin can't offer some real mountains, but the rest is not really true, the Grunewald region with the river Havel, the Wannsee and all the other lakes, der Müggelsee, Grünau, Regatta Straße, Rübezahl, die Volksparks Rehberge, Jungfernheide und Friedrichshain, Alt Tegel, Dahlem Dorf, Schlachtensee, Altstadt Köpenick mit Schloss, Friedrichshagen, Tierpark Berlin in Friedrichsfelde, Botanischer Garten Berlin, Domäne Dahlem, Britzer Garten usw..
    I can give you so many opportunities for so many beautiful and diverse trips in and around Berlin, with also a lot beautiful house and residential areas, like Mexiko Platz, Bayrischer Platz, Savigny Platz, Rüdesheimer Platz, Altstadt Spandau bei Berlin.
    In Bavaria i can highly recommend the region of the Bavarian forest/Bayrischer Wald with the cities of Regensburg, Straubing and smaller towns like Deggendorf, Bodenmais with the Glass street/Glasstraße.
    Plattling offer's a small regional train that drive's you directly into the region, die Waldbahn offer's 4 different lines with changes on different points, it's not so difficult to figure it out and tickets are not so expensive, you can buy a daily ticket for around €8,50 to use all the lines the whole day as much as you like. One line is driving you through Bayrisch-Kanada on the side of River Schwarzer Regen.
    I love that area.
    Really nice is Passau and the Chiemsee aera.
    You can see there is a lot to discover and to visit.
    Hopefully it wasn't to much.
    A second part is definitely necessary.
    Have nice day 🤠

    When it comes to friendliness.. yes Berlin can be a little harsh but that's big city mentality. Compare this to people in Munich not to some small towns. Even in the north when I moved from Berlin to a smaller town people suddenly were weirdly friendly.
    From my experience people in Berlin, London, New York are nearly the same.

    • @KendraAshanti
      @KendraAshanti  3 года назад

      That’s true, I haven’t spent enough time in other big cities (besides Frankfurt) to make that comparison though. I wanted to compare places I’ve lived longer term. I’m from NYC and made a video comparing Berlin to my city, so feel free to check that out!

    You are probably the first person I know claiming Bavarian dialect (of which there are quite a few) to be easier to understand than Berlin one... For quite a few of your observations, I believe they may be linked to the fact you are comparing the largest German city by far to a rather rural place. Even the largest Bavarian city, and, one could argue, actually the only major city in this state, has just one third of the population of Berlin. Have you ever been to the lakes and woods north of Berlin ? A paradise for nature lovers. Of course, if you love the mountain scenery, Bavaria is the most you will get in Germany, but it not even close to what you can have in Switzerland, France, Italy and Austria.
    Comparing NYC to a remote place in Texas would not yield the same result as comparing Malone, NY to Houston, would it ?

    Based on your language statements I have the feeling that you are not in Bavaria, but in Franconia which is part of Bavaria. However Franconians do not appreciate to be called Bavarians. Bitte sage nicht in Franken, dass Du in Bayern lebst. Die Leute hier mögen das nicht.

    Saying hello to strangers on the street is more of a village/small town thing. It always irritates me when people do it in munich 😅
    You could go hiking in the Mangfalltal, it's beautiful. There's an animal farm in Valley where you can rent camels or alpakas or llamas to hike with through the Mangfalltal.
    And May 1st there's a party in basically every village & town to put up a new Maibaum (maypole).
