Chris when i was in Belize during the monsoon season we cut a ping pong ball in half and made a small hole in both halfs then threaded them concave onto the hammock strings which ensured the downpour wouldnt end up on our sleeping gear.......its best to heat up a nail on a gas stove then pierce the ping pong ball ...keep it small and tight.
Top tip that mate! Nice one! 👍👍👍
60yrs old and just got my first hammock. Thank you for the video sir✌️
Excellent to hear!
Me too! 68 yo here! Doing adventure m/c riding here in northeast USA.
I love this video. Really hammering in the “keep it simple” attitude with pointing out all the things we really don’t need and the fact that normal string works just as well as a “real” ridge line.
I think it’s a very good thing to try and hold back the materialistic stress that is almost ever present in the rest of the community.
Thanks - totally agree - outdoors helps re that. ATB
No ponciness.... No top end show off kit...just keeping it real for the beginners. It's helped me loads. Top video.🙏🏻
No worries - thank you for watching
Thanks for the video, whoever was playing the slide guitar has an awesome technique, very soulful and authentic.
Thanks Jeff! Glad you enjoyed
Very helpful watch for new beginnings. Although, I thought you overlooked danger signs of possible widowmakers, always look up and around and never attach a hammock to a dead tree are often rotted in the center or the root system making them susceptible to tipping over from a strong breeze. Stay away from large patches of fungus, pealing bark, exposed trunk with rotting core. Campers can always tap or thump on the trunk of a tree and listen for a dull, hollow sound, indicative of a dead and dry core. Keep safe and enjoy your hammock adventures.
I love that you were not scared of a little rain. 🔥
Even easier way for beginners, just use hammock straps that have a single loop at the tree end like the straps in this video, but the other end has 7-10 permanent loops stitched in, with a carabiner each end of the hammock you just hook it onto which ever loop works for you, no lines or knots etc necessary for the hammock itself
Good tip man - thanks 👍
Straps made of loops are the way to go, easy and 20 bucks
They are called daisy chains
I like the tarp line set up.. I'm gonna use that.. thanks buddy..
No problem 👍
Great tutorial❤
Very honest and no frills video for beginners like me. Have a real interest in starting hammock camping. Would you say it's a year round thing?
Thanks Jake, if you have a warm sleeping bag and under quilt, I'd say so yes 👍
I've never hammock camped - the more I see things like this the more it looks like the best way to go. I enjoyed the no-frills display, looks super easy. Well done Sir!
Great way to camp - ATB pal
Last winter, here in northeastern USA, I practiced hammock camping during the winter in my back yard. I quickly learned that an under-quilt is necessary for cold weather. I managed to get by with a thin mattress, but it's not the ideal solution.
Thanks for fighting the elements to help us along with hammock camping. I'm going to give it a try.
You'll never look back Jim 👍
Thanks for the great video!❤❤❤
Welcome
Thanks Chris, that was great, informative and fun without any BS and with great music.
No worries, thanks for watching Paul
You're welcome lad!
Good video
The last time I was in a hammock was in 1992 in the jungle of Belize
Thanks Patrick - appreciate you watching! That sounds ace!?
Hi Patrick, I was there in 84...Spent more time sleeping in Rauls Rose Garden and the 102 club in BC 🤫🤭🤒. Take it easy mate
Brilliant!
Great info and just what I need to see.
My first hammock adventure will be next this Saturday coming.
Just got me self a Solognac hammock and tarp from Decathlon.
Seen a couple of vids on this, but this is the clearest and easiest to follow.
Thank you.
Regards
Glad you found it useful! Enjoy your hammock camps! 👍👊
Good video. I put a metal ring on the continuous loop at the hammock then put the whoopie sling on the other side of the metal ring. This then provides a water break at the ring to help keep you dry.
Good tip thanks! I'll be sure to try that out 👍
Thanks for the video. I have been tent camping for awhile and just bought a cheap hammock and can’t wait to try it. I’m going to use your tips on setting it up. Can’t wait to try it.
Good stuff Mike, the beauty of it is that no matter how wet, boggy or uneven the ground is - you remain out of it and comfy. Check out 'Shug Emery' on RUclips if you haven't already, he's the master of all things hammock.
I'm totally sold on hammock camping... recreational camping, bug-out, at home. I had to go through three hammocks before I found the ONE, a 12 foot long double wide Onewind with mosquito netting, tree straps, ridgeline, etc included. I'm 5'8" and get a perfect diagonal lay, and can even get a comfortable side lay.
Sounds great - I've got a few nice Hammocks, including by One Wind. The best I have is by Ticket To The Moon 🌙👍
Excellent video just what I needed, just bought a hammock and tarp and was wondering what to do with them really well explained thank you.just need somewhere to go now
Thanks - enjoy your first hammock adventure - an amazing way to enjoy the great outdoors 👍
Great helpful video
I have a unused DD 4x4 tarp and a unused DD Hammock (bought in 2014) I’ve not used em.
No better time to get them out then mate! ATB
Sods Law, as of Christmas 2019 I’m waiting for a new hip. I’ve lost my mobility. So back garden camping only BUGGER
Made some whoopi slings in 2014 watching countless videos. Yours makes it look simple 👍🏻
Apart from the water tracking back. Needs a caribeaner or something under the tarp to break it I think 💭 🤔
Best wishes for your recovery mate
Cheers Bud, it’s watching RUclips that’s keeping me going 👌🏻👍🏻
Great Video Chris well done, I have a hammock but as yet have not slept out in it but will do this year, Thank you
Alright Rob, you'll enjoy hammock camping. Hope you found the vid useful.
A treehugger....hugs a tree!😁 Awesome! This is the vid I needed being a total noob wanting to get into outdoorsy stuff lol
Glad you found it helpful Laura!
Great video filled in the gaps in my knowledge doing my first overnighter in my jungle hammock near Edinburgh on Wednesday. And great you covered about the dripping with the rain as I’d forgotten what to do about that so big thumbs up!!
No worries Jenni, enjoy your hammock camp 👍
Thanks so much, great video. I have always camped with tents but me and my friends are hoping to do a kayaking and hammock camping trip this spring..your video will help forsure
You're welcome - thanks for watching! Enjoy your hammock camp!
thank you great info video
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative video, I learnt a lot. I like the idea that you can pitch a hammock pretty much anywhere as long as you have 2 fixed points. Gives you much more scope to wild camp. Cheers Chris
Cheers Joe - cannot beat hammock camping! It's a top adventure. ATB, Chris
This video made better with a cool accent. Thanks for the video!
No worries Janelle, thanks for watching
I'm going to be sleeping on a hammock next week at the beach, this video helped me heaps! With the knots, you need not to know the names but know the execution. 😝😝
Haha, enjoy! Glad you found it useful 👍
Thanks for the video, guess I'm gonna hafta go camping. I have a large property in the middle of the city that was a little over grown. I took out 50 trees, actually way more than that. Its nicely groomed now but there isn;t a single place to put up a hammock now lol. I lost my opportunity to try out my hammock stuff. maybe I'll try tying to my humvee and a tree, That might work. I ordered the woopy slings so I'll probably try some over the next couple days. your videos are great. you would think the manufacture would put more info. out like that but they don't from what I've seen
Cheers Tom - glad you found the vid useful and good luck on your first hammock camp 👌
Totally agree that hammock camping is awesome. Top video and really useful.
It really is - thanks for watching John
Great video mate 👍
Thanks Neil!
Thanks very much for the video which is really handy. I recently tried out a friend's hammock in the garden and really enjoyed it so going to get one of my own and try some wild camping. Great to see how to attach all the strapping to the trees and hammock. Tree huggers and whoppie slings sound a good idea. Looking forward to getting out there!
Brilliant, glad it helped out. Hammock camping is lovely - enjoy and ATB, Chris
Great vid, thanks for posting. Love your marlin spike!
I've been camping all my life, (68 yrs) just bought a hammock last fall of 2022. It was around a hundred bucks, US. The only thing I didn't like, and fixed with sturdier cord, was the dizzy sensation I got every time I moved, and the rig started swinging side to side.
Can't beat some hammock camping and the marlin spike hitch is a great knot to use. You will get used to the sensation - ATB, Chris
Great vid. Lots of hammock gravy. I got a set of woopie slings from henge hammocks. Only 6 quid each. I got tow different colours. Head and feet end identified buy red and green.
Good stuff, love hammock camping
I have a Trek Light Hammock, but have been too "nervous"to use. I am now pretty confident thanks to this. Thank mate.
Nice one Chris! Cheers 👍
Great video, really helpful. Ive only ever used tents, but been eager to try hammock camping.
It's a great way of camping. Very versatile and much more "at one" with nature as you're so exposed 👍
Was an Aframe
Very helpful! I haven't started my adventure yet, but I learned quite a bit in this 30 min. A lot of people these days (even campers) are so spoiled & used to their "creature comforts that wouldn't know how to begin to do a simple "from scratch" setup like you just demonstrated...but there again that's because most of us are "glampers"😉😏.
Thank you for sharing. One NEVER knows when they'll need to know basic survival skills like this & how to start a fire! Personally I'd be lost.🤷 Guess I'd better go search YT!!😊😄
Thanks very much - glad you found it useful 👍
I have a hammock with a midge net 🤔, just haven't tried it yet. But at least you have saved me a lot of time, I had wondered how long it would take me, to find two trees the right distance apart (honestly) 😟😂🤣🤣🤣
I reckon you'd be okay mate - just get out and have a go - it's pretty straight forward and a really enjoyable way to camp - ATB
Excellent
Thanks for watching Jane
Literally just come back from the local woods setting up and playing with my new hammock. Next weekend is when the fun starts. On here looking for tips. PS loving the music as well. Best era of blues!
Can't beat it - enjoy your hammock camping, it's a fantastic way to enjoy the great outdoors
Hi Chris, thought i would try a hammock so just watched the vid. Cheers for the info👍
A great way of camping Steve 👍
Building a pod system that lives in two stuffsacks mounted permanently on the hammock endstraps, when in use they act as rain gaiters and storage areas for bits I don't need but that need minding.
Hammock, down bag used as inner if needed, synth bag used as pod/underquilt and 3x3 tarp all in two bags that squish to normal onebag size.
Good setup 👍
@@MCMOutdoors I just need to make a slit at the head end of the synth to feed the hammock through and it's done, probably do a proper walkover video when I have and some nice cold weather to test it :-D
I love hammock camping in the woods light and easy to carry no heavy tent to carry 3mx3m Tarp you will stay dry you are right about those hammock tree hugger straps I have them strong and sturdy and will not slip .
Can't beat dangling in a hammock George!

myman did what he couldve done in 10 min but took 30 minutes. respect for the video
Cheers man 👊👍
Cracking video mate nice and simple especially the ridgeline set up thanks very much appreciated.. stay safe...colin 👍🏻👌🌲🔥
Thanks Colin, I'm happy with this setup - quick and easy and just works. ATB, Chris
It was mate I've been out for brews in it will have to try the knot you used with the small ally poles though otherwise I'm there mate thanks great vid
Cheers Rob, great way of enjoying nature mate
nice. totally forgot the marlin spike as a way to 'adjust' the location point. great intro :)
No worries, thanks for watching
Good video but I would point out that your drip knots need to be under the cover of your tarp close to the end of the hammock otherwise you can still get water running down.
Cheers Neil and thanks for the info - I didn't know that - and always happy to take on board feedback. On my other hammocks, I've used carabiners between the hammock and whoopie sling and these act as a drip stop in themselves. Chris
Excellent and very informative! Thank you Sir.
No problem mate
Found your channel a couple of days ago and watched a fair few of your videos since.
Just before finding this video I had actually just decided that I am going to go on a last minute hammock camp tomorrow night.
From your accent I am guessing you don't live to far from me at all. Maybe we will have to get out together some time and I can bless one of your videos with my incredible humour :D haha
All the best mate
Haha, good man. Thanks for watching - cannot beat hammock camping - ultra relaxing. Enjoy pal and ATB
I live 5 miles from The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, In the warm weather, I sleep in a hammock, In the cold weather, I sleep in a tent.
My choice in sleep system is a direct reflection of the environment I'm operating in.
Idyllic place you live ⛰️
1st thing to do when setting up in woodland is check for dead fall in the branches above. Hard to see in summer admittedly but always needs to be checked. If in doubt, move.
Thanks for watching Paul 👍
Thanks pall a good lot off simple easy forward help for myself!!! Any tips on a set when you're dog is with you?
Not really mate as I don't have a dog, but I know some who put them in the hammock too. Enjoy.
Great vid on how simple it real is. Few year back I went down that rabbit hole of hammocks and boy was I overwhelmed. Got it on for the most part but there is a lot out there. Shug is also a good one to watch. Great job
Thanks Armando, I took my hammock camping inspiration directly from Shug - he's a legend.
Your tarp ridge line is brilliant!
Thanks, it's by a company called Henge Hammocks 👍
Nice video mate, thanks for the tips
No worries 👍
Love that blues
Ace isn't it!
My girlfriend and I are going to buy hammocks soon. We just bought our tent and said enough ground sleeping! We are just getting into camping because our cats love to adventure.
Great to hear, enjoy your hammocks!
Love your channel dood. When I get some bux I’ll make a donation.
Don't worry about it mate - watching and commenting is great 👍
Great setup; simple and efficient
It sure is!
Thanks for the video. Want to try this but can you use a hammock if you are a side-sleeper?
Absolutely you can. I often sleep on my side too
Great video thanks
No worries Ron
Great tutorial thanks
No prob
Thanks for the video.....The tarp and whoopie slings should be here mid week. Could be testing this coming weekend. :)
Happy Days, I think you will really enjoy it - really relaxing. ATB 👍
Awesome content pal and really enjoyed this vlog. You explained the setup very well and easy to understand, now i just need to purchase the stuff and give this hammock camping a try. Thanks for sharing and great channel. keep up the good work...
Cheers! Thank you for watching 👍good luck for your first hammock camp!
Great video
Thanks for the visit
I am a side sleeper...but have a hammock and never used it because of that. Are they ok for a side sleeper? Thanks for the video and your FB group is great!
Dawn, yep you can side sleep in a hammock and I've done that many times, very comfy. Glad you're finding the FB group useful! 👍
@@MCMOutdoors i am also a side sleeper. Start out on the back laying diagonal and end up side sleeping or curled up. Best sleep. Even set up at hm to get some good sleep.
I am a side and stomach sleeper in a bed. When I get in a proper sleeping hammock, I am totally comfortable on my back 90% of the time. Hard to describe. But it's WAAAY better than sleeping in a bed. I sleep outside in New England USA year round.
I like that. The simpler the better.
Cheers, thanks for watching 👍
I've only been camping for like 6 months, and have been out with my hammock like 7 out 8 times. I'm getting pretty good at getting my perfect hang, but I've been looking for a ridgeline with that open space between the lives at both ends so i can bring the tarp down a little closer without the ridgeline rubbing on the hammock suspension. The ridgeline you have is remarkablely simple and genius, I'm almost embarrassed that i didn't think of that setup myself. Do you still use it? No problems with it wanting to slide down the tree?
No issues with those ridge lines - they hold fast, don't sag and get the job done - ATB
Good informative video. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful mate
brilliant video , love your videos , so i take it you wont be sleeping on shining tor no more lol lol
Thanks mate - oh no, I definitely will - spooky experience but not put me off 👍
I'm a few years late to this but hopefully going for my first hammock camp this weekend! Can I ask what make/where your coat's from? Looks dead good for wet weather camps.
It's an Anorak No. 8 by Fjallräven - actually not the best for prolonged wet weather! Great on cold and windy days with nice layers under. Rock solid hard shell.
@@MCMOutdoors Awesome, thanks!
Really helpful vid Chris. Am a details man and hace been windering for a while, how you can attach your hammock to the tree. Am sorted for tarp but, after your vid, I might be convinced to give thr hammock a go. Ta Chris👍🏻
*excuse my fat thumbs😵
Thanks mate - there are lots of methods out there - but this is what works for me, just keeps it relatively simple. It's a great way of camping and sleeping.
Very nice!
Cheers
you look like the guy from Outlanders hehe greate video
Haha ! Thanks for watching !
Really good video!
Thanks for tuning in 👍
Can you cook from inside? Leaning out or too far down? What if side sleeper? Nice video thanks. Thinking might try this year...
Hi Tony, you can cook under the tarp yes.......... I side sleep in my hammock often, it's very comfy.
@@MCMOutdoors I assume you have to get out of hammock to cook though? Thanks for reply 🙂
I want to go hammock camping in the Gobi Desert, any suggestions?
Came for hammock info. Stayed for the into music!
Thanks - some great tracks hidden away in the audio library - ATB - Chris

Great video ty
No worries Ken - thanks for watching pal
good to see your supporting Haze but when are you getting your own patch stickers?
They're in the pipeline mate - when I'm 100% sure on our logo I'll hit the go button.
👍
@@MCMOutdoors would even be better to see you both doing a collaboration wild camp!
I’m not sure on that ridgeline mefferd and it look like a lot of messing getting the correct tention. Plus the good old trucker hitch so way so my simpler
Any decent hammocks for 2?
Check out One Wind Outdoors - they do a decent double hammock :-)
how bad did you freeze over night without an under quilt?
Not bad 👍 I'll be getting a quilt though.
Hey nice video but other than how to deal with rain water running down the line... how do you stop bugs mainly ants coming down the line because some trees have ants on them... thanks
You can't stop that. I've never had ants crawl in. Some hammocks have bug nets around which you can cinch tight around the whoopee slings. I guess that would work.
@@MCMOutdoors okay thanks.... I just never hear anyone talk about insects crawling around.... I live in the southeastern part of the United States we have bugs in trees....lol
what type of pack is that you use ??
That was a Swedish army LK35 mate
Is "Sod's Law" like "Murphy's Law"
Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.
Haha! True!
I always thought that your ridgeline would be on the outside of your tarp so if raining it doesnt run down the line and drip onder the tarp ...?? I may be wrong but if you have a drip line on it i never noticed.
Hi Mark, you can do either - I find running it under achieves better tension. I have drip lines and haven't gotten wet yet 👍
But how are we watching this if you walked off and left your camera in the woods?
Thanks for the video.
Cheers, thanks for watching Frank
Tarps are wise even if its not raining bird poo is never funny 😂
Thanks for watching 👍
Didn’t think of that!
Mate your using the tree huggers wrong man they look same as dd ones why not use the dd suspension setup you wrap the hugger round and put the carabiner thru both openings on the tree hugger then adjust the height with the dd system well easier
This technique works well for me mate, but thanks for the tip 👍
What if you don’t have trees? I’m newbie just bought my first one
If you don't have trees - you can't put it up amongst trees! Enjoy.
Pay no attention to these self-proclaimed experts on RUclips. Their "diagonal lay" is nonsensical, I think their minds must also be offset! And their tarpaulin arrangements for cold conditions are just idiotic, forcing them to carry extra bulky and expensive gear, and they STILL complain about being too cold. I just used a simple basic hammock and a small THICK tarpaulin, and arranged it in a SENSIBLE way that kept the hammock completely warm all round. My first time using it ever in freezing conditions I was VERY WARM.
Care to advise on a setup?
