Making Bullnose Tile

  • There are MANY ways to finish off tile on walls and other transitions, but I still prefer Bull Nose over other methods. A lot of tile doesn't come with matching bullnose, so here is how you can create them from any tile you have.

    Alpha BN blades r really good and last a long time. I have one that I have had for years and still works great. I don’t actually cut the tile with it. I just use it for the BN. If u go slow and steady u can BN a piece in one pass. A couple years back I purchased a dry cut tile/marble/granite router bit for my variable speed angle grinder that is faster than the alpha blade and a fraction of the cost. Thx for the videos!!

    purchased a 10” bullnose blade had a hard time getting it to cut strait but after experimenting I tried doing it by first cutting a 45degree angel then changed blade to the bullnose blade and just followed the 45 and it did great

    I started using metal edging instead of bull nose. With all the cool profiles they have now , you can make your edges something special. I recently tiled a bathroom ceiling and I trimmed it with metal dental moulding. You guys should look into it.

    My boss has the same setup. His wheel is a little different yours looks smooth his has big teeth on it but it is a bullnose wheel for a differwnt machine. We have never gone through the trouble of having the cut edge of tile match the grout line but if we have say a dark (say black) shower we will spray paint the edge of the tile. It works out fine bc at this point the tile is unglazed so the paint seeps into it and sticks great.

    Good video for those who like bullnose. I prefer Schluter Stips (not necessarily Schluter product but that's what people know it by). Easier than making bullnose and more modern looking.

    • @StarrTile

      jgocar24 .. yes I agree and there are a lot of applications where I use that, but I always like bullnose to frame out my niche

    • @jgocar24
      @jgocar24 6 лет назад

      Probably more practical using bullnose in a niche to eliminate an extra grout line and possible lippage between tile and strip which can trap water in the niche. But i'm a sucker for punishment LOL.

    When you begin to run your tile through the blade you've got to physically grab the front of the tile by the blade on the Outer Edge of that tile and pull up to resist the natural Flex that it's putting on that tile as it's cutting disc round over and you'll have a much better round over cut as in result I'm in California I'm not sure where you're at look forward to hear from you God bless Ken

  • @tileslay6543

    I have that blade and use it mostly on natural stone than polish them. If you think $300 is expensive well hold on when you understand the machine it’s designed for is around $8,000. It puts the blade horizontally so length is no problem. It’s brand is a Bulldog. Used commercially.

  • @alankauth
    @alankauth 6 лет назад +5

    I have one of those blades but I run multiple passes to get the rough bull nose. I never cut through tile and never do it in one pass. Then I polish the rough bullnose with a Makita 5 inch angle grinder and diamond (wet) polishing pads. You just dribble a little water on the tile from a can with a small hole in it as you grind. Wear rubber boots and use a gfci on the grinder. I bull nose the full tile pieces. Why do a 2 inch edge? Full tile bullnose is a custom cut that no one does but the best. Too, you can bull nose two edges to meet at a corner. Or you can do opposing sides. Or you can bull nose an inside corner cut. When I used to pay for it to be done the shop used to do it all by hand with a grinder and dizmond polishing blades. They start with coarse all the way down to 3,000 or 5,000 grit. I have done it that way as well, but unless you do it a lot it is hard to get a perfect round radius with diamond pads. No different than sanding a radius on wood with a power sander. I rough shape it with the diamond blade and then go through all the grits with the grinder to polish it and match the face finish.. Softer tile like travertine is a piece of cake. Doing it with a grinder alone is easy (if your can free hand a perfect radius and even if you can't, it will be close enough unless you do a really bad job.) Granite takes a lot of time to go through all the grits to get the scratches out to a smooth polished finish. I send that out and let them radius and polish out all the scratches from the coarser pads.

      Alan Kauth .. that sounds like a lot of work, I would have to charge my customer an exorbitant amount for the length of bullnose that I need on a typical job to make that happen, but I am curious about that manual method that you describe, if you can find any video on RUclips showing that I would appreciate you linking it in the comment section

    • @alankauth
      @alankauth 6 лет назад +1

      StarrTile If I can't find one, I'll record bullnosing a tile. I'm rehabbing a house and I am putting in some pretty soft travertine from Turkey right now. It will be pretty easy to bull nose one of those. Granite, oh my gosh. That stuff takes forever to get all the scratches out as you go through the grits. I send it out. I can do travertine or marble no problem. I can show how to do it even without the diamond blade, but the diamond profile gives you a big head start. I think I only paid $75 for my 8 inch diamond profile blade but that was over 10 years ago. Might even be 6 inch and I drop it down a lot. It is no different than trying to sand a radius in a piece of wood. It's just the harder the material, the harder it is to polish. Though I guess you could cheat and put some wax in the scratches and make them disappear. It might be that a more permanent clear filler could be found. But I have done it fully with only diamond cups and a grinder. Just like sanding wood but harder.

    pretty easy to do when you have a non-clay tile. Can you show how to do this with a clay tile to avoid the racing stripe look on an outside edge?

  • @LandbergTileTV
    @LandbergTileTV 6 лет назад +8

    Why not miter to avoid having to use bullnose? I guess it would work for shower side walls, but then again there are so many profile trim edging options from Custom and Schluter. It seems like more money and labor than miter and/or trim edging profile. Still a great video! 👊

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  6 лет назад +6

      Landberg Tile DIY TV old habits die hard, 20 years ago they didn't have all the trim and such, but I did make mention of the mitering since you did such an outstanding job on your video, ultimately I give choices to my customer and they make a decision on it. The only real place that I like seeing bullnose now is on a niche, makes it a picture frame design and brings attention to it. Have you bought any new tools lately?😂

    You can make bullnose manually with a good blade, a grinder and polishing pads. I don't like using that blade with the wet saw because the blade runs off and ruins the cut, specially with long tiles.

      Marcus Beletso I would really be interested in knowing how it would be easier doing it manually, it would seem to me it would take longer with a grinder and free hand and then how do each one of them match up exactly without some type of rig. If you know of a video out there that shows your process, please link it I would love to see it and I'm sure so would many others

      Well, there's some history there, but basically he commented on a video of mine some years ago..disparaging how I do things. I asked him to call me so we can discuss methods, he declined and stated " I only want to protect your subscribers, I have no desire to talk with you ". I'm like wow, the RUclips police has arrived ! Well then he deletes the comment, in fact EVERY comment he ever makes on my channel he promptly deletes after I respond.
      He has chosen me to be an enemy because he feels ALL TILERS should do things exactly the same way...His Way. That's it in a nutshell. In the end I could care less about him,. but he has hate & let's it rain on me for whatever reason.

    Why would you ever leave the blade running and run your material back through it in reverse? Run it through in the forward direction, stop the blade, remove your material, rinse repeat with next cut of tile. Even this type of saw can produce kickback, although less likely I have seen it happen multiple times as a blade becomes dull. Just asking for trouble here, to me.

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  6 лет назад

      Agreed... that's why I mentioned it was a learning curve, for both Ron & def me.

    • @wallacegrommet9343
      @wallacegrommet9343 6 лет назад

      Disagree. The blade direction is much more hazardous at the leading edge on overhead blades, as the blade wants to climb the material and draw any stray object under the cutting path. Diamond blades have no teeth to lift the workpiece at the trailing edge.

    • @ravenpath8393
      @ravenpath8393 6 лет назад

      Wallace Grommet are you disagreeing with my whole statement or just the less likely comment? Or what exactly are you disagreeing with?

    • @wallacegrommet9343
      @wallacegrommet9343 6 лет назад

      I simply have observed that tile saws are much more forgiving about feed direction. Regarding dull blade issue, on smooth rim blades if you have diamond on the rim, you can cut. I have used the same blade on my saw on a dozen major projects without any loss of cutting efficiency

    • @ravenpath8393
      @ravenpath8393 6 лет назад +1

      Wallace Grommet, agreed. I have seen in-experienced users have a tile saw kick the tile out or knock it up nearly out of their hands before. In wood work this is much less forgiving and I have had people lose fingers. We should promote safety at all times regardless of significance of the chance of an incident or the direction of the blade/cut/movement of material.

    Blade is too small for a 10” saw. Buy a 10” blade and slow down with the cuts. Ensure your saw table is dead level and square to the blade and you’ll get nice clean cuts. The process is better for natural stone . Wouldn’t waste the time and money on the porcelain.

      Wallace Grommet Wallace, the tile we demostrated with was porceline, which is super strong, unlike ceramic, which snaps and cracks too easily.

    • @wallacegrommet9343

      Pretty sure my tiles were porcelain, too. The glaze seemed to be the downfall, as it chipped away from the cut line and tile edge with shocking ease, and looked to be really thinly coated.

    • @StarrTile
      @StarrTile  6 лет назад +1

      Custom Building Products makes the grout I use & has matching paint for all their colors. You can get them from a tile store that carries that brand or go to their website.

    • @JT_70
      @JT_70 6 лет назад

      Kurt Boczarski We had a paint store custom match the tile color. They offer small sizes for testing paint samples. Mine look better than the factory BN edges. I manually cut my BN with a diamond blade in an angle grinder and then polished and rounded them with diamond polishing wheels in an air grinder. They look identical to the factory edges. We only paid about $5 for the qt of paint at SW (it may have been on sale that day).
      After measuring for the BN (using a factory BN as a guide) and drawing a line, I put blue painters tape on the line to ensure that I had a nice, clean, straight edge as I cut the BN.

      It is specifically for that purpose , the grout company makes the paint kit so that you can paint the edge of the bullnose the same color as a grout , it's not what I do, it's how it's done
