HOW TO MAKE AN EASY DIY EGG TRAP FOR BREEDING NANO FISH!

  • This easy DIY egg trap will make aquarium breeding egg scattering fish like danios, rasbora and tetras so much more effective!
    For a long time I struggled with collecting consistent numbers of eggs from my celestial pearl danio fish (sometimes referred to as galaxy rasbora). Given the opportunity, these fish will eat their own eggs. So I constructed my version of an egg trap that collects eggs while preventing fish from eating them!
    In this video I walk you through how to build one of these for yourself! After 2 days of using this trap, I have already collected over 170 eggs!

    I wouldn’t even us the lid, I’d cut the mesh slightly smaller than the 5.7inch so it sits about 1/4 the way down in the glassware. Might have to use one small rock to hold down the mesh but Atleast you get to keep your lid and it’s easier!

      That's not a bad idea! As long as it fit tightly I think that would be very useful. I guess at the end of the day both methods do the same thing ☺️ these fish just love eating their eggs

    The gorilla glue gel works best when the pieces are WET.... not dry. Sticks instantly and faster... no weight needed... only contact. I use it all the time with my live plants and aqua scapes.

    The mesh is usually made with polypropylene and it's a notoriously hard plastic to attach to anything. Even gluing it to itself is challenging because it only really likes heat treatment.
    You can use the baking soda + super glue technique for gluing plastics together. You literally just make sure the super glue and baking powder contacts each other to where you want the two pieces of plastic to glue together. For mesh plastic, I just fill up one row of the plastic mesh with some super glue and then pour baking soda on it. It creates a very strong bond and the excess cured glue can be sanded down. You can use however many rows you want if you want extra strength.

    had the same idea , just wasn't sure if that kind of plastic wouldn't end up giving off stuff into the water over time. guess letting it rest in water for a week will take care of the worst of it, and the rest will be handled with water changes. putting the mesh inside seems like a better choice in my case. I got feisty little panda catfish scattering all the moss around.Also , can't use glue. Got no wife to steal candles from!

    How long before the fry hatch? Did you have to feed them?

    • @sydneysangels
      @sydneysangels  Год назад

      CPDs take quite a while before they hatch, and I don't feed them until they are free swimming for at least 12 hours. So maybe 5-7 days before that happens? A lot of it depends on water temperatures too!

    Is there an update to this system? How did it work out? Pros/Cons?

    • @sydneysangels
      @sydneysangels  5 месяцев назад

      I have used this system quite a few times after this video with lots of success! The super glue I used to secure the mesh has started to pull apart slightly, so I would recommend using hot glue instead. But other than that it has been a really great way to collect eggs. The only con is you physically have to get your hands in the tank and remove the eggs daily otherwise they have a tendency to fungus up!

    Would it not be worth just poking holes in the lid? Maybe with a hot nail. Sounds super repetitive but I imagine one could make a tool with a bunch of nails to poke a row or 1" square at a time.
