DeVante’s sound selection is top notch and the way he layers everything really well it just all blends so perfect. I would love if he had like a sit down interview breaking down how he made all the beats and how he wrote the lyrics for a lot of the songs especially from this album and the 3rd one because he really showed out on both of those. I honestly don’t care for a Jodeci movie but I’d want to see like a documentary or a podcast of some sort of them just breaking down their music.

There use to be classic albums documentaries that would come out talking to the artists and producer, and I would love one of those for Diary of a Mad Band. I have listened to the Feenin instrumental a lot lately, and some of the sounds on that are just nuts. The Cry For You instrumental is a thing of beauty, and I have gone to sleep listening to that on a loop. It's so gorgeous.

Gospel chord voicings. The bass line sets the structure and then the chords on the upper range are usually inverted so that they have a ‘tighter’ sound. Being able to reach many keys gives him a dope advantage

@rnbplanet2089 thanks for the information. I always thought this sound came from the Emu Morpheus or Roland JD990 modules (as DeVante was using those modules extensively at the time.)

I mentioned Omnisphere, because I am familiar with the VST moreso than the other synths, and I have heard this sound used alot in mid 2000’s R&B. It (Omnisphere) was created by Eric Persing, who used to work for Roland and was one of the sound architects behind the D-50. Many iconic Roland sounds can be found in Omnisphere. You can also look into Roland Cloud as well.
I think it’s a synth guitar lead patch DeVante used. It’s similar to the one you hear in the beginning of ‘My Heart Belongs To You’ also, if you listen closely.
Hard to believe this beat was made in 1993, sounds so ahead of its time..
