This is not the only reason your wheel shakes. Warped footers will also do this. You found one problem and yes it’s dangerous. Also you need to mention that the slide pins should be lubed every time you change the pads so the caliper will release properly and you don’t get uneven wear on the pads, this also helps with the issue of the pin being hard to reinsert into the caliper.
I don't have a BMW, but after my last brake job done by the Auto repair shop got all the symptoms of this classic front-end vibration that I never had since I got my CAMRY one year later.
It goes away the next morning and comes back after latter of the day. Initially I thought it was suspension problem.
Then I noticed one wheel is much hotter. Immediately I knew I got a right front brake lock.
Got home from the busy highway and use my temperature scanner gun and clearly shows the three normal alloy wheels were 52 -56 degrees Celsius.
The locked up wheel measured at 540 degrees Celsius with smokes comes out behind the rim.
The repair shop confirmed it's the front left side wheel got a stuck caliber.

I have this same issue on my bmw f10 535i replaced everything on my suspension ! dumb mechanic never caught after replacing pads and rotors. I decided to take apart my caliper slide pins, completely loose and threads worn out. Your are the goat 🐐 🙌 I've seen this videos like many of your videos but never thought to remove my caliper till months later SMH
Excellent video mate really good insight. I knew someone years back who had changed most parts and never solved his steering pulsing when braking heavy especially on motorway and he gave up in the end and sold his E90!
That comes from an inexperienced person claiming to be a mechanic or technician, I spent many weeks every year going to BMW factory training in Ontario California along with Toyota factory and Chrysler factory school,not to mention 38 years of experience,I can’t say I’ve seen it all but I’ve seen a lot. Great Video, I have always taught my trainees to take a step back,slow down and look at the big picture.
I've been working on cars since I turned 15 and I still haven't learned everything. I would rather consult a shop manual then assume something. Also, it helps to pay attention when taking something apart to see how it goes back together.

Here's a favourite saying of mine which I have used in print many many times and may even have used in one of my videos: "most mechanics aren't fit to service a walking stick".
This problem isn't restricted to BMWs.That kind of carrier slide pin is used on numerous cars and if one isn't careful (think 'mechanics'), cross threading them is realeasy done (that's probs how this problem started).
If you need to force the glide pin then u need to take out the rubber "bushing" in the caliper and remove the rust/oxid as the pins should glide effortless.
I’ve been working on BMW’s since 1977 and I have never seen that happen on any of that type of pin. I always clean everything before assembly. I always push the lubed pin through and you can hear a distinctive click as the pin contact’s the mounting bracket threaded hole. I also own the correct metric tap to clean the threads in the caliper holders if needed. I also have a very simple fix for M20/M30 camshaft failure.
I have this exact problem. 130 000 miles on an E91 touring 330i, the car has Koni shocks so I thought they were to blame (and the car has been lowered). I will watch this after work, many thanks!

Ur absolutely right. ✅. Me myself like to always double check my work. And check the wheel nuts are toque them properly. Ur risking someone’s life. And family. I’m a Mot tester myself. And been doing mechanical work for years. I say always double check ur work to be safe. Doesn’t matter friends or customers. BE SAFE AND KEEP THEM SAFE. 👍🏽

Hi, my E60 shake or vibrate when I brake. The bolt from the bushing that bolt to the subframe - the plate was broken. Do I need to replace the subframe or just welded to the subframe? Thanks
Warped discs are usually the cause of vibrating brakes. Not every BMW has these worn out treads, it’s not common. But a good point to check if having this issue.
Warped discs are far from the problem on this car. I have warped discs on my black E60 and do not have a shaking issue at all. So I don’t believe that for a second that causes that issue unless the disc is badly badly scored and pitted

We shall agree to disagree 😄 that’s my favourite quote right there but I’m just saying my brakes on my black E60 when I say warped are badly warped and I have not a single issue with shaking on that car. But maybe you was different but I think it’s also about the quality of brake discs used in the first place. As you see I don’t cheap out on any of my cars

every warped break rotor ive ever done customer complaint is the wheel shakes back and forth when i step on the breaks shit ive driven them where the car shakes so damn bad from warped rotor the dash board damn near comes off when breaking on freeway and the weird thing is this guy is so wrong on the video ill go take a slide pin out completly and not get a shake the pins do not support any of the breaking forces the caliper bracket houses the pads with push on caliper bracket when squeezed on disc by caliper caliper its self is also supported again by caliper bracket for the twisting force of the wheel on the caliper does this guy really think that the slide that allow the caliper to float and be happy with out falling off on big bumps if anyone really cares i can prove all this buy going out to my 550i right now removing both slide pins and taking it for a spin
I recently replaced brake discs and pads all round on my f06 gran coupe. The passenger front was warped. I also replaced front wheel hubs and front lower control arms. Car is now humming and the brake wobble is back. There’s a small amount of play in the upper wishbone ball joint. Could this cause vibrations and brake wobble?

If the guide pins don't screw into the bracket anymore, don't you need to replace the caliper? The bracket and caliper come together as one assembly. Thanks again for the tip! YOU ARE THE MAN!

I have a E83 X3 with the same issues I changed the brakes myself as it had the problem when I purchased it! The slide pins tightened up properly no cross thread issues but the problem still persists on the passenger side under heavy braking it is dangerous any other suggestions to what might cause this?

I have a 2011 5 series GT and have vibration at 70, wobble going over bumpy road and vibration when braking. Garage has said it is the tyres, have had all 4 balanced, plus tracking etc... help

Hi, thanks for the advice. Do you put copper grease on them ? I hesitate with these kind of parts, I've heard they're not ment to be greased but at the same time when they get rusty it's not great either...
Right on this subject you can put a small amount to help it slide in easier so it don’t get stuck. But I would NOT put loads on it and neither would I put copper grease on the backing plates of the pads as that is no longer needed anymore with new technology. Most brake pads come with a metal backing plate to stop brake squeal

Great video, I have issues with my bmw f30 320d. 3mths ago I got the brakes changed all round, 3mths later I got shaking at heavy braking, got front discs changed under warranty and symptoms are back. Could I bring the car for a diagnosis from your garage?
If I was you I would check your these on your car.
copper grease are not good on rubber so use a little bit of silicone grease. use copper grease for break pads sliding contacts.
I pull those pins and clean them with scotch pad then lube them and reassembly is easy. good find.
You mentioned the vibration issue is common for that series BMW. Is it possible the caliper pins (being loose) are a common issue?. Thanks for the well presented video.

Ì have 2010 bmw 528ix had accident to front passenger wheel axel and everything was replaced by mechanic when im at red light my car feels like motor is shaking until i drive then its fine? I also have 4x4! Brake lights all wheel drive on dash lit too
I've had m sport calipers fitted on my f20 1 series , new pads & discs fitted. Wheel alignment and wheel balancing done but still shakes when I brake and hums when breaking from 80mph . So unsure what to do

I had a Ford Taurus that used those pins that screw into the spindle that the calipers ride on. And, one got cross threaded. A friend who owns a parts shop told me about a company called Help that manufactures new pins that have threads that are slightly larger than the original factory OEMs. He didn’t sell the replacement part but sent me to a chain store that did…..I bought the part and problem solved.

Had nasty wobble develope after a few miles of fitting new pads....took it back to mechanic after test drive he said car needed new drag links..but he was busy said he.d contact me when he had a spot...i drove to my friends i mentioned the prob straight away he jacked car up offside front wheel was stiff it was the piston in the caliper not being cleaned when new pads fitted cleaned both front calipers.cleaned n greased pistons BINGO problem solved....👍👍👍👍👍

Interesting video thanks for taking the time to explain this, I have an e46 m3 owned it for 4yrs or so and I have terrible vibration through the wheel on braking lately, new pads 6 month ago sticky calliper that was rebuilt too recently but I’m also getting a kind of fluctuating vibration through my pedal too.

you actually have to buy a few parts, use your own eyes and look at your car yourself... how is someone on the Internet supposed to determine a hardware fault on your car. he is just pointing you in a direction, you still have to walk there.
So would this apply to my e46 325xi? I have new Koni struts up front and tie rods also. Neither fixed the problem. Another BMW tech said my Control Arm Bushings were bad and then another mechanic said they were fine. This shaking is really messing with my driving experience. Help!

Too many cowboys in the mechanical world …. You should advertise good garages for the public to go to that don’t rip people off..
I wish I could but to be honest, I don’t know any garages that ain’t cowboys they have high overheads and wages to pay if they can cheap out doing things and make big money that’s what they will do. Im about one out of 100 people in the Uk who don’t do this dodgy cowboy stuff. As you see I spend alot of my cars to correct mistakes from others. I do so many customer cars myself for all my area but I don’t do stuff like that at all. Even if someone says to me can I repair it cheaply I tell them no cheap will leave them stranded or killed I don’t work like that if they want cheap they shouldn’t come to me as I’m not cheap by any means. But it depends on the person most people are always in a rush to get the car back on the road that’s why I don’t deal with anyone who owns just the one car as those people end up making you rush and take the car even if I find more faults as they need it back. Realistically I only deal with people who has a spare car to use while they wait for everything to be overhauled and they don’t mind

Just need to have a eye for detail and know about cars to know when something don’t feel right even this one to hear about needing a new caliper even I knew that was bullshit as that’s a rare thing to go on these that’s how I know someone was trying to pull a fast one on my friend. But I do know a lot of garages don’t like to touch any of these cars E6X chassis at all they was way to advanced for there time and still are and people just don’t understand them

My latest BMW brake shake issue was solved when I replaced the tyres for the correct size... who knows why.. My traction bushings are still a little worn (e83).
someone completely retapped that hole to a larger diameter, for who the hell knows what reason. maybe there was a fitting in there as a thread repair, that worked itself out, because there's nothing on the other side to keep it in

My dust cap wont go back on bottom slide pin? Any help pls. I found the short pin at the bottom and swapped
Micrometer against rotor check run out. Then check hub. Anything more than .001 equals vibration.
I have this issue on my 520d, I bought it a few weeks back and the owner at the time said it has steering wheel wobble when braking, it has the red stuff pads in and the same discs as in the video, I'm guessing whomever changed the brakes have possibly not checked the slides properly or they knew about it and left it 😳 I'll be checking this tomorrow!! Its so fucking tricky to find a mechanic/garage thats trustworthy. I do 99% of my car work myself. Its cheaper to buy the tools and have them for life than pay a few garage bills. You also get the peace of mind that everything done correctly.

Hi! I've got a 2006 e83 and I hear humming in the rear when driving over 30km/hour. I don't think it's the wheel bearings. Could it be the driveshaft or rear differential?

Sum-B***h! That's dangerous. I remember busting a guide pin on my 1992 Camaro, because the last several brake services the "mechanics" wouldn't replace the $5 guide pin kit when they started to ware. Over time the ware accelerates as the caliper movement increases. Fortunetly it was the top pin. Which caused the caliper to get pulled into the brake rotor. Completely buggered up the caliper, but allowed the caliper to get me the last 1.5 miles home. I have never let a shop do my brake service every again. I do them myself so I know it's done correctly. Specialy since I drive the Camaro at high speeds in the twisty mountain roads. I want to know my brakes are good. It gives me another opportunity to to inspect the steering & suspension as well. Doing your own oil changes gives you the opportunity more often to inspect and find early signs of issue as well.
You're a legend, i have the same problem in e66 7 series. Whenever I brake hard above 120 km/hr my steering wobble a lot . If no error code, try cleaning throttle body
lot's of so called mechanics out in the field working as mechanics....even at the dealerships....most problems stem from something very simple and usually become complex, expensive and down right dangerous when not carefully examined and repaired by a competent mechanic. Throwing good parts after good parts does not fix anything if the problem is not diagnosed properl.y.thanks for your video

On the E90, I experienced the same problem, I changed the rotors and brake pads but the vibration is still there what else could be the problem?

Hi I have BMW 320D ED vibration on idle which disappears with slight acceleration was told its exhaust but hoping not DMF.

Like the dimpled and slotted rotors seems like it would be more reliable than drilled and slotted rotors. Less chance of cracking

I’m not gonna lie. I don’t remember the last time I checked my calipers or brakes(did do suspension work about 8 months ago) I feel the shake when I drive but not when I’m passenger. Could it really just be that? It would’ve torn already right??
Not necessarily this car was driving for 2 years like this since brake change. And we only found the issue now ! As I said my friend was led to believe he needed a new calliper soon which simply wasn’t the case
This is a problem, I had my car looked at by 3 machanic they told me to change the tyers I did then the brake pads , then disk then lower arms ... I spent so much trying to fix the car and still shakes

i’m also curious bc i’ve had my e61 for almost a year and can’t figure out the steering wheel shake even a well known shop couldn’t really figure it out. i got new rotors and pads, control arms, etc
but still have shake when breakinf

Problem is you need to remove the rubber bush in the brake caliper and clean the corrosion in the caliper.
So the pin slides in freely.
Seen this a 1000 times.
You can also get a repair kit for repairing the thread.
The guide pins on my e90 are absolutely fine. Still, the steering wheel shakes like crazy when I apply the brakes at above 90kmh. So 🤷♂️
Looks exactly similar to the Jeep Grand Cherokee I recently did. I thought it was one of the dumbest ideas. Also cannot stand free floating design either.
That's horrific, I am not a mechanic however I know enough to double check my own work. I may not use a torque wrench for these things however I take care that they are in properly.
Your not meant to use a torque wrench for these if I’m honest. Someone has just gone way way to tight and ripped the threads out when you only need them hand tight at the most. I have always done it that way and never had a issue I don’t know who done these but man honestly this was a death trap waiting to happen
Don't use adhesive style pads, they suck and cause vibration issues. I only use abrasive pads. The OEM BMW pad for my E60 is abrasive, very dusty but keeps the discs tru. Those non dusty ceramic style will cause vib issues from my experience.
I don't think this really caused the shaking steering wheel. Yes it's dangerous to have the slide pin loose, but the pads are in the carrier and will bear the load while braking. The slidepins go through the caliper, through some rubber isolators, the caliper is essentially "loose", but it can't go anywhere because 1 pin was still there and it has a spring on the ouside to keep the caliper in place.

Wow man I wouldn’t trust Halfords with my wheelbarrow let alone my car. They are thick as s**t I mean it takes 3 of them to change a headlight bulb on some cars and even then they can’t do it they sit there scratching there heads. I feel sorry for people who rely on them I really do

I fail to see how the thread on the Slide Pin is smaller than the thread on the Carrier.

On the BMW E46 the slide pins are equal in length, sounds idiotic to have two lengths. On the E46 the slide pins doesn't carry that much load, just the sliding but of course, it could bump off if there's no slide pin at all.
Looking at the caliper mounting bracket in your video, it appears that it had been drilled and tapped for a Helicoil. The Helicoil probably backed out when the caliper guid pin was removed and was lost, not noticed by the person doing the brake work, or walked out when the caliper guide pin was installed. It should have been fairly obvious to the person installing the caliper guid pin that when it would not tighten there was something wrong. Sloppy repair, no excuse.
I disagree this is a COMMON cause of this. Obviously stripped slide pins are dangerous & no decent mechanic would overlook this. It may have caused steering shake while braking in THIS car. However, this is not a common issue, nor is it a common cause of steering shakes while braking. Maybe it’s different where you are, but in the U.S. only the lowest of the low tech would ignore stripped slide pins. And I have had them strip before, you know when they strip. Warped rotors, pad deposits on rotors, & worn control arm bushings are actual common causes of this.
E91 here and it shakes like a motherfucker when braking. I'd like to just leave it at a workshop and have them fix it but I'm afraid they will mess it up because I know several guys who has changed rotors yearly on E90 models and that can't be right. If I drive slower than 70kmh, faster than 120kmh or at any speed but brake hard, it's not so bad. I was thinking it must be the bushings but I think I will check this myself first.
Probably because of morons over tightening the slide pins. They really have no give in them at all.
I like the set up much really needs a nylon lock nut behind, but they should be put in with red Loctite
This looks like a bad design.
