Nibbling out concave curves is a messy business (that you must clean up straight away) however it comes in very useful to us craftsmen who do not have the blessing of a scroll saw. If you're going to have a go at this, be sure to use proper grozing pliers, anything else will surely end in tears....
If you are aggressive with nibbling there will probably be deep undercuts if you have not developed a good crack below the score line. Therefore, it is important to score the line and get that crack well established before nibbling out! I ALWAYS finish off the curve with my grinder to smooth out imperfections.

I have been making Stainglass pieces for more than 20 years. I’m completely self taught and consider my work pretty OK. But your Finesse of the curve cutting is fantastic. I never knew that you should score / tap before nibbling. Thanks!

Yes you have a point, however this clip is about making big use of the grozing pliers in a known & successful manner. This is what grozing pliers do best, so that is exactly what was demonstrated. If you like, I can do the same thing with a cutter, in fact it's a great subject for another clip a?.... thanks Dishwater....

That is so cool and what beautiful work. :) I kept thinking about the chips though *laughs* I am such a 'waste not, want not' person that I kept thinking what could be done with the larger ones besides throwing them away. I thought could put the chips in a clear candle or maybe something else that would turn out clear so you could see the chips in the light but be more permanent than a candle. are you drawing these directly onto glass? I'm too intimidated about ruining my work if I do that, but I'm not afraid to try. I have a problem reading the explanations, with the bright pink against the light background. could you use darker, simpler letters? I don't see very well anymore, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Yes the template is traced around with a marker pen. These marks will come off with cleaning the glass before the foiling. If you need to, pause the video feed to read the text....
Sounds like you need to "run out" your fear so that you can get on with the task without distraction.... Here's what you do,..... get a bunch of 3mm float glass (plain window glass) and just start cutting it into smaller pieces. You don't care if you may "do some wrong" because you have only seek to practice and it's not going to be used for anything.... Just cut it to bits, then cut some more...... You will need to be using a quality cutter and use oil to make the job easier.... Keep on cutting until you are feeling relaxed about it all...... See, no big deal now a... :-) Good luck Lisa
Brand name..... ahhhhh? however as nibbling pliers, they do have jaws made specifically for this task. Not any old pliers will do this job therefore it is necessary to buy a pair from a glassers store.
Interesting. I see you are not using running pliers for breaking off the long bits. Why, I wonder? And I am trying to make long slivers of glass, I guess the glass nipper tool is for that, however, I can't get my grosser to break off little corners. Not sure why!! It doesn't do a damn thing. Thanks

Hi Greg, the main reason things go wrong is because the cutter fails to score a good line..... That's because it is either blunt and simply can not scratch properly, or it's the users error by failing to apply enough pressure to the task. Practice makes perfect, so grab some plain 3mm window glass and cut it up,..... If you buy a new self oiling cutter, you understand how easy the job can be, you'll hear it "chatter" when it's going well..... good luck dude.
Do you know if this technique will work on a Agavero Tequila bottle? I would like to cut the "leaves" on the bottle out. Or do you know what technique will work?
definitely, you must cut / complete the concave curve (inside of the crescent moon) FIRST! Once you have that, then score and break out the outer circle curve..... good luck mate.. :-)
Why would you want to use the grozing plier like that? Another perhaps easier way would be to cut small curves into the crescent and use the grozing pliers to gently break each curve and then remove and then grind the rest. Surely that would be easier and faster?

Coloured bottle clips. Use little shot bottles, fill em with shards, then a clear oil. Display in sunny window.... ?

any tips on how to cut half moon shapes to fit over a circle? I keep breaking the end bits...
