  • I use manual mode and show you why I use manual mode at weddings on the Canon 5D classic. I find it much easier to divide the wedding into scenes and work slowly in manual mode. The Canon 5D classic is very easy to use and you can set up manual mode very easily.
    I have put together a resource page for the Canon 5D with a lot more information about the 5D Classic Mk1. Here is the link. ⭐️ bit.ly/5d-free-resource-page

    It's interesting to note that you assumed others use non-manual modes on this camera! Wondering what's the basis of this assumption!
    Even hobbyist photographers like me; always use manual mode on full frame cameras. I've been enjoying this wonderful hobby for the last 15 years and own three full frame bodies namely 5D Classic, 5DII and 5DIII. I'm always on manual mode while using these great cameras for landscape and street photography purposes. Even I use 5DIII for wildlife photography in manual mode. Sometimes, I use my pure action cameras (1DIV & 7D) in shutter priority mode when situation demands.
    Thanks for the video.

      @@RichardBarleyphotoManual seems so hard at first, then you get good at it very quickly and have all the control and no autoexposure shenanigans. Just take a test shot, adjust, and you're usually golden. With a camera this old you can't get everything in it, so just let your clouds blow. Less dynamic range = more contrast. You only need 6.5 stops for monitors and prints and this gives you 8 clean, still.

    I was a US Navy Photographer ('72-'76) and live near Gillette Stadium and bought a 5D mkI this summer, not so much for the full frame (I have a 6D mkii) but for the old school feel of you being able to control everything (more being forced to) on my other Canon's (have the 80D 90D and 6Dii) even in M you can use Auto ISO. Here it is old school you set your ISO, like picking out a roll of film and then dial in the shutter speed and aperature. I can even carry my old light meter! I call it my throw back camera but I can still blaze away and shoot hundreds of shots and not worry about changing film in the field or for different situations.
    I enjoy your videos

    I now have a 5d MK II that is absolutely incredible with AFMA.

    Im not a wedding photographer but I USED to shoot in manual mode. AWB and RAW only. Recently ive been playing with AV mode and EV comp. I've found it to be slightly faster out in the field. I always end up anywhere between +0.7-1.3 EV for ettr. This camera produces beautiful shots at the max native iso of 1600 when exposed all the way to the right. Ive never ventured onto 3200.

    I've been doing a fair amount of night portraits with my 5D classic over the past year, and I found early on that the noise at 1600 with two stops of push in lightroom is more subdued and tasteful than out of camera at 3200. I try to minimize fill light to get the most of the night on the town feel, and the heavy initial underexposure may be a factor of that observation. But for my style of shooting the difference was substantial enough that I don't even enable the expanded ISO range.

    Thanks once again Richard. I am a long time "believer" in what you use and what you teach. I purchased a used 6D last year, but with rare exception, still prefer the files from my old 5D1. That said I would be very much interested in learning more on how you use the 5D in lower light with examples of shooting to protect / recover highlights. Not sure I am up for an entire tutorial, but it is a possibility. All of your videos have been rock solid. You are, along with Joe Buissink, Dennis Reggie, Joel Grimes, my absolute photography fave's.

      @RichardBarleyphoto  4 года назад +2

      Thank you for your kind comments, The key to producing the best file from the mk 1 is producing a bright highlight in a RAW file then recovering it back again in lightroom. The shadows open up and noise goes down.

    Using your 200 ISO and 200 shutter speed and 5.6 I see in your video you have the camera on spot meter. Is that so you can check exposure on the highlights from time to time to keep it to the right and not blow it out?

I have shot the 5DIII that a friend has but I keep going back to my 6D, to me the black and white and low light just seems better and this is hard to describe but the feel of the picture seems better to me. I am not tech kind of person so maybe I am all wrong on that, but when I print my images I like the 6D better than when I tried out a 5DIII. Richard I'm certainly no pro, wouldn't consider myself to be very knowledgeable about digital cameras at all. What I am wondering is that, given the widely acknowledged low DR and relatively poor iso performance of the 5D, why don't you ever dip into the base iso of the camera when you can? Do you not get any advantage with that increase in DR and lower noise? This isn't a snide or rhetorical question by the way, I believe you do everything for a reason but I'm wondering if you can elaborate on that point a little for me! Thanks for these absolutely fantastic vids. I'm waiting for my 5D to arrive in the mail (Feb 2024 and I've still never seen jpegs that looks so tasty). It will accompany my 1D classic which gives very pretty images and is from 2001 I believe.

    Do you recommend using Exposure Bracketing? This gives you a range of pictures and at least tests which exposure works best in the situation.

    • @RichardBarleyphoto
      @RichardBarleyphoto  4 года назад +2

      Bracketing your exposures is a good idea if its possible for the subject you are photographing. Accurate exposure is important in you are producing a jpg file. With the RAW file you do have quite a bit of latitude for error with the 5D classic. I always expose to the right which means most people would think I am overexposing the file, One thing to remember is the newer cameras Sony, Nikon recommend under exposure to retain the highlights, then brighten them up in lightroom or photoshop afterwards. Never do that with the 30D or 5D because you will introduce a lot of noise. Long answer to your question , but yes bracket until you really know the file well.

    I was a wedding photographer.for 20 years shooting fully manual film
    cameras with my eyes to focus or distant set within depth of field settings on camera for action or too dark for seeing moving figures
    All turned out sharp and in focus
    Too many doodads on digital and too much bullet spraying and emphasis on wide open all the time
    To each their own

    I recently got a 5D and it’s been a really nice camera! I’ve noticed the ISO is set to auto only on the fully auto photo mode but any other mode you must set it manually? Is there any way to get auto ISO on manual mode?

      No. Auto iso is not possible on any other mode other than full auto. It is easy to change even while looking through the view finder. Far easier to change than on a film camera :)

    Great workflow here. Are you ever concerned with staying at F5.6 you won’t be getting as much bokeh as you would with say F4?

      Never really worry about Bokeh to be honest, I think that it is a matter of experimenting and finding what works for you. Content is the thing I focus on not blurry backgrounds. thanks for your comment, i should do a video about the addition to Bokeh in the world.kind regards rich 😀

      Hi there great videos ! I just purchased the 5d mk1 and I’m very intrigued with your use of f5.6. I have to admit I’m one of those who loves the look of shallow depth of field. Do you think you really could shoot weddings with variable aperture lens IF shooting at f5.6 ?
      Thanks

    Nice video. Do you have any experience with the Canon 6D "classic". It is becoming quite cheap on the second hand market now.

      6D classic, I would like to find one. I think the layout of the buttons is great, the image is very different to the 5dmk1

    Hi Richard, help me please! If you are choosing manually both the speed and aperture - how can the exposure be correct if youve fixed the ISO? If the ISO cant change to match your dialled in settings and take them to a correct exposure , how does it work? Confused - kind regards ( where are your courses?)
